Shome Mishtake Shurely: Judy Curry’s Climate Etc Blog Shut Down by WordPress

Posted: November 15, 2012 by tallbloke in Blog, media

I hope this is a temporary glitch. Judy Curry’s excellent blog Climate Etc has been shut down or suspended by WordPress. Back up your data people! –  H/T Vukcevic.

More news on this as it comes in, I’ve emailed Judy but I’m sure her inbox will be stuffed right now.

  1. tallbloke says:

I hope this gets sorted out quickly. Judy’s blog is one of the liveliest and busiest comment-wise in the climate debate. The wordpress backup export file generator doesn’t seem to be working at the moment either. Which has me drumming my fingers…

  2. kim2ooo says:

Reblogged this on Climate Ponderings and commented:

  3. Weird. I really can’t imagine what possible grounds there might be for this.

  4. tallbloke says:

Derek: Agreed. It’s worrying that WordPress would take such a step with such a popular blog. I really hope they’ve got in touch with Judy directly so she can respond to their concerns.

  5. Ray Tomes says:

Interestingly, the wayback machine has nothing since July last year

  6. tallbloke says:

Judy just emailed to say it’ll be some hours before her tech team will be available and any notification email would have gone there, so she doesn’t yet know what has upset WordPress or if they’ve communicated about it.

Keep calm and carry on Judy, we’re rooting for ya!

  7. plazaeme says:

    Thanks, Tallbloke, for the news.

  8. Terms of Service is an awful legal document, denying any responsibility and putting all burden on customers. I would rather not discuss its details on a blog though. Nuff to say it makes extremely easy to kill a non-premoderated blog for third parties by injecting stuff. Has a blog war been started?

  9. vukcevic says:

Rob van Dorland of KNMI has just started a brand new climate blog Climate Dialog, where JC is on the panel together with Walt Meier and Ron Lindsay.
She presented an interesting expose on the Arctic ice, but four links to her blog are not available.

  10. tchannon says:

Export is working as normal. Nothing unusual about the blog or servers.

  11. tallbloke says:

Thanks Tim, did you take a backup?

I think it timed out on me due to my slow connection.

I’m sending a spider crawl round at the moment to grab all the images too.

  12. tallbloke says:

Peter, it is a concern, I’ll be wary of allowing new names free commenting rights.

  13. vukcevic says:

    Just in:
According to Anthony at WUWT (live on air announcement) : he spoke to WordPress and they do not know what is going on.
    Richard Lindzen is on now

  14. tallbloke says:

    Back online. 🙂

  15. Yes, it’s back, but can’t see any explanation there. Dou you have info on the root cause of outage?

  16. vukcevic says:

B.P. Dou you have info on the root cause of outage?

My tech got an email from wordpress: “it was a mistake. the site is now back up.”

    vukcevic | November 15, 2012 at 3:01 pm |
All is well as long as the ‘mistake’ was not someone’s achievement.

  17. That’s not an explanation, is it?

  18. Paul Vaughan says:

    no access in morning
    access late afternoon
    now no access again

well that was interesting. still no idea what happened, or why the site came back. there seems to be no way to contact wordpress (and they did not contact me at all.) Anthony Watts helped by contacting someone he knew at wordpress, perhaps this did the job.

  20. tallbloke says:

I’m going to draft a letter to wordpress owners Automattic and circulate it round the community for additions/amends. If it was a dirty tricks effort which got Judy’s blog shut down, Automattic need to be more aware of the nature of the debate and use good judgement to handle matters arising.

  21. Paul Vaughan says:

As indicated above, the site has reverted back to being inaccessible, so the problem apparently has not been resolved.

  22. tallbloke says:

Anthony tells me it was a database error.

  23. tallbloke says:

Paul: The site is OK from here, maybe your ISP has cached the suspension notice

  24. Greg Goodman says:

Moderation by Judith is light to non-existent. Either sabotage or spamming could have triggered some kind of automatic shut down for breach of conditions.

  25. Aussie says:

TB I just went to Judith’s site and it is back up. Some nasty person must have reported her site to WordPress. Everything looks ok.
