A new  nuclear plant will be built at Hinkley Point in Somerset after Energy Secretary Ed Davey granted planning permission.

The development of Hinkley Point C by French energy company EDF is a boost for the nuclear industry following a series of setbacks in plans to construct a new fleet of reactors in the UK, which ministers say are needed to cut carbon and keep the lights on.

The permission for 3260MW of generation will be fulfilled with two European Pressurized Water Reactors. Hinkley is situated on the Severn Estuary in the southwest of England.

  1. Excellent news. If we are genuinely committed to so-called “green” energy (rather than using it as an excuse to line the pockets of the already wealthy) then Nuclear is the easily most efficient and least environmentally damaging.

Yes, good news. But they can’t be built overnight so the UK will still have to dash for something, and wind/solar cannot provide the answer. That particular dash is partly the cause of the approaching problems.

  3. Speaking of wind (I hope Rog doesn’t mind my shoehorning this in here) I’m really struggling to get some accurate figures relating to wind generation for a small project I’m working on. I’d be grateful for any pointers to good sources of info or suggestions re: who I might contact.

They have promised, or are going to promise, a garanteed price/unit of double the current. !!!!

One is tokenism. All are needed.
