What I think about climate change #2: Nick Clegg MP

Sheffield, Hallam, Liberal Democrat

1: I passionately believe that climate change is one of the greatest problems we face today. It is essential that politicians take rapid action to address this issue at local, national and international levels. As a Westminster MP I, along with my Liberal Democrat colleagues, support a Climate Change Bill which would set binding, independently monitored, annual targets for reducing emissions, but I also recognise the need for additional policy measures to make this happen. As a first step the Lib Dems are currently promoting a ‘Green Tax Switch’, which would introduce and increase green taxes on high emission vehicles and aircraft, whilst reducing income taxes elsewhere.

2: Britain should and can lead the way with regards to tackling climate change, using its unique influence in the many international organisations to which it is a member. However, to have any credibility in this respect we must first put our own house in order, cutting UK emissions which currently represent 2% of the global total. As with Kyoto the EU will have a major role to play and Britain should work constructively to support this.

3: I am installing energy saving light bulbs throughout my home and I try to use public transport as far as possible. I recycle recyclable waste at home, try to cut down on the unnecessary use of paper in the office, and unplug all unused electrical appliances. Energy consumption will certainly be a far greater consideration next time I look to purchase a new car or household appliances such as a fridge or kettle. I am also looking into switching to more environmentally responsible gas and electricity suppliers.

‘Calamity Clegg’ a rare truth by Chris Huhne (now in jail).

  2. J Martin says:

    To summarise what he said:

He is essentially going to passionately destroy the economy even though he knows it will have no effect on reducing global co2 levels.

Taxing high emission transport without reducing tax on low emission transport is ineffective. For example; I drive a company car but although my car tax would be less if I drove a more fuel efficient vehicle, the money the tax man allows me to claim reduces disproportionately, so I am ironically better off driving the thirstier vehicle. In addition the thirstier vehicle is invariably a higher spec. vehicle and so I have even less incentive to move over to a more fuel efficient car.

So these politicians might think they are making tax regime changes, but behind their backs HMRC is unravelling what they intended to happen, and producing the opposite effect.

I shall stick to driving my 2.2 litre diesel at the current tax allowance of 18p per mile, instead of switching to a 1.59 litre diesel at 12p per mile. Indeed, so crazy is the tax regime that I am still better off driving the 2.2 litre diesel at 15p per mile than driving the 1.59 litre diesel at 12p per mile. The tax changes by 3p per mile at I think 1.61 litres. Penalising the top end does not encourage people to move to a lower end without also adding positive incentives. That’s reality and life.

If HMRC would allow me 15 p per mile to drive the 1.59 litre vehicle then I will switch, because although the car is lower spec. that would be counterbalanced by getting a better fuel allowance per mile. There is of course no real incentive for HMRC to encourage lower fuel use as that would result in less revenue at the pumps. In this area and no doubt others, the politicians and Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs have a conflict of interests.

As Dellboy would say, “What a plonker!”

Time for the public to start a Western world ‘spring revolution’ to rid ourselves of these mostly bent and useless politicians.

  4. Kon Dealer says:

    He needs his head boiling.

  5. […] Tallbloke reports that Nick Clegg has been brandishing his green credentials again, saying:- […]

  6. It seems Cleggy is off on holiday to Davos this week!

I bet he won’t be going by bike!

    Hypocritical Clegg Off To Davos

  7. George says:

Nick Clegg talks a load of crap

  8. TG McCoy says:

We have similar delusionals here in the USA both Demican and Republicrat..
If Clegg is like any of them, they make statements like this then go Skiing via
the family Gulfstream Vl and then take the family SUV (Hybrid of course)
    to the 5000sq. ft.”Cabin”…

  9. oldbrew says:

As soon as you see or hear the words ‘tackling climate change’ you know the source is deluded.

It’s just not going to happen.

  10. graphicconception says:

“3: I am installing energy saving light bulbs throughout my home …” et seq

I installed mine over ten years ago – and downsized the car etc. How very dare these people lecture me about the environment if they are ten years behind me?

Then there is Big Al, possibly the largest private polluter in Tennessee due to the mine on his land, not to mention the several over-large houses, the motorcades, the private jet …

Then there are the likes of Harrison Ford, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of Conservation International, for instance, who likes to fly down the coast in his private plane to get a burger!

The sad part is that they do not understand why the warmist message is not reaching sceptics. At the risk of stating the bleedin’ obvious: Don’t use hypocrites to spread the word!

    From Wikipedia:
“Hypocrisy is the state of pretending to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that one does not actually have. Hypocrisy involves the deception of others and is thus a kind of lie.”

Now, where did I put those blood pressure pills …?

  11. Ceri Phipps says:

Interesting that he thinks recycling household waste reduces CO2 emissions. I’m not so sure it does. The one item that most of us have been recycling for a long time now is glass. Given that it is heavy, it may be that the energy involved in collecting it and then sorting/washing and melting and recasting may be less than the energy used to make new glass from raw materials. But what about light materials like paper? The energy involved in collecting and transporting paper is very high in comparison to collecting and transporting trees.

But I often make the point to people about the economics of recycling household waste: If it was economic to do so, there would be people knocking on your door asking for your household waste. As it is, we have to pay to have it taken away.

  12. Phillip Bratby says:

You obviously didn’t get point number four

“4: I am an idiot, but my wife is making loads out of the wind farm scam”.

  13. tallbloke says:

    This is going well. 🙂

    Who shall we pillory next?

    Requests? I have 400 more to go…

  14. TinyCO2 says:

When you read things like that you realise how out of touch most warmists are with what they’re campaigning for. It’s like the defence secretary saying ‘at home I have some very sharp kitchen knives so I’m very familiar with combat issues’.

  15. EternalOptimist says:

I dont see how buying energy saving bulbs, insulation and switching things off etc will reduce CO2 emissions. What they do is save you money.
Then you take that money and buy something that was made in a smokey factory in China and shipped half way around the world.
I reckon Clegg is INCREASING CO2 emissions by his foolish behaviour. the swine

  16. Peter Miller says:

The UK’s energy policy, spearheaded by the Lib Dems, is beyond goofy.

It guarantees high prices, fuel poverty, strategic insecurity, rolling black outs in a few years time and the de-industrialisation of the UK.

Coal = cheap, reliable energy. India, China and Germany are building hundreds of new, fuel efficient, coal fired power stations. The UK is dismantling them or filing them with foreign wood chippings and burning this energy inefficient fuel.

Solar and wind = expensive and unreliable energy. The UK is forging ahead with ugly, ridiculously expensive wind power, which all needs to be backed up by new conventional gas fired stations for when the wind doesn’t blow, or blows too hard. We dither about nuclear power. The UK’s energy policy is so insane, you just could not make it up.

Clegg believes being green is politically cool and not plain goofy. lib Dems are famous for their sensible sweaters, but not for their scientific astuteness or their ability to govern.

  17. Holby says:

I could say a lot but it would be wasted on him….. Knobhead is all I can manage.
Would he really understand that CO2’s ability to create heat is logarithmic?…..err no.
    Knobhead it is.

  18. Stephen Richards says:

Would he really understand that CO2′s ability to create heat is logarithmic?…..err no

CO² does not and cannot create energy. Energy can neither be created or destroyed. First rule of physics. The reason for the log assumption relates to saturation which is logarithmic.

  19. Roger Andrews says:

    “Who shall we pillory next?”

How about Sir David King? He probably did more than anyone else to get the CAGW ball rolling on your side of the Pond.

  20. tallbloke says:

    Roger A:

Sir david is a peer of the realm, and wouldn’t do anything so downmarket as sit in the house of commons. Ergo, not part of this survey, but his views are fully expressed in his many reports to government. Pick one you would like us to pull apart and examine.

  21. Roger Andrews says:

    TB:

Heaven forbid that a peer of the realm like Sir David would sit in the Commons, but there is his 10th March 2004 “Examination of Witnesses” testimony to the Lords, p.42 et seq. (Google book form so I can’t link to it). It starts off like this:

Sir David: “… (climate change) is the biggest issue for us to face this century…. our response to the threat of global warming will affect our personal wellbeing and the evolution of man, sociey and all life on our planet.”

    And ends up like this:

Chairman: “Sir David, you are obviously an extremely good missionary for this very important cause. It has been a delight for us all to listen to you and hear your answers.”

A lot more stuff out there too.

  22. Geert de Vries says:

The irony is that climate changes naturally, a little, most of the time, and within the same enveloppe since the ice ages. CO2 is not doing it. The alarmists should be dragged into court and put away for damaging everybody’s wellbeing. Clegg is surely the champion idiot, with Cameron only a short step behind, believing the same alarmist babble. That these characters not inform themselves correctly before making nation-affecting decisions is unforgivable. Even electing new politicians will not help, they are all equally dumb in matters science. Elected by a mostly brainwashed population. Stupidity reigns.
