“Three men had an appointment at Achnacarry Castle – a Dutchman, an American and an Englishman.” — Aljazeera
In 1928 Achnacarry served as the meeting place for global petroleum producers in an effort to set production quotas. A document known as the Achnacarry Agreement or “As-Is” Agreement was signed on 17 September 1928.[4]

Aljazeera is running a short four part story briefly outlining the history of cartels and locus of real power brokers in the supply of oil and energy more generally.

I expect there are minor errors in the Aljazeera article but few since most of it is familiar to me or plain obvious history.
Some of you know my world view tends to be unusual, trying to look where we ought to pay attention instead of mass media or politician led, often to the crowd. Strategic, diplomatic, will and must know reality but competence or acceptance is another matter. There are problems such as knowing and reacting, must not be seen to do so.

I am feeling rotten, very tired so I am pottering, hope I am making sense. Above was an article I decided not to run back in April. Web content is still there. I’ve removed most of my commentary

the relevance of this to today’s world is?
Aljazera misses the point that OPEC and nationalized oil companies control oil, and have for many years. The so-called 7 sisters were an oilgarchy/cartel that did a decent job for awhile, but whose time passed a long, long time ago.
I think one of the things that is continually being missed is that the 7 Sisters required cooperation by National Governments to do what they did. This was normally through agreements and often bribery and alledgedly also violence in some cases.
Like the Train Barons of the old West, without corrupt gubmints they would have never been as large and powerful as they became. I consider this the fatal attraction of FASCISM!! The corrupt allianceof tyrannical gubmint and corporations.
Do they cover Armand Hammer and Occidental Petroleum?? ;>)
Winston Churchill had a pivotal roll in global oil development. Advances in the design of battleships lead to the decision to move from coal-fired to oil-fired for the Queen Elizabeth class ships. See here. This was a bold decision as the UK had plentiful supplies of steaming coal but little oil. Churchill, as First Lord of the Admiralty, stepped in to secure oil supplies from Iran and the rest is history.

I sympathize with your worldview. My take, from work, politics, the social scene, marriage and divorce is this: when something doesn’t seem to make sense, you don’t know the whole story.
Years ago I came to the conclusion in my company that either I was stupid or they were insane. It took 18 months to realise that I wasn’t stupid, they were crazy, indeed. But it was crazy as a cognitive dissonance thing. They knew things they couldn’t discuss and really couldn’t admit, as by admitting them and still working with them as if they were real, they would be smacking themselves in the forehead every time they spoke. So the psychological survival technique was to pretend to themselves as if everything was normal, above board and internally logical.
A cheating husband denies he is having an affair while he is, by changing the definition of “affair” (as Clinton did with the word “sex”). Green bureaucrats say their turbines, which give a green CO2 value for the Prime Minister’s office he needs, make money by focusing on the bottom line of the company, not on the full-cycle economics or the subsidies. And so forth.
Drax to go to wood chips … so that when the brownouts come, the energy ministry can quickly bring 17% of UK power back on, because DRAX never went fully to wood chips, just a symbolic amount, because it never made sense logistically to do so to any real power level.
Mann, Hansen, Gore …. they talk the talk because we all know they get the money that way. And they justify it by believing that the intent of raising awareness or something is enough by itself.
Little is as it seems.
