California tries to shut the door on IKEA

Not an IKEA chair

The LA Business Journal reports:
‘Environmentalists Cite Global Warming to Block Burbank Ikea’

Much-needed good-quality jobs for local workers? Yep.
Solar panels on the roof? Yep.
Rolling out the welcome mat for a successful retail enterprise? Nope.
What do they get instead? A lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims that the mandatory environmental impact report ‘did not meet the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act’ says the LABJ.

‘The lawsuit claims that the report failed to discuss ways to reduce energy usage. It also claims the report did not properly assess the project’s water supplies since the store will generate emissions that will exacerbate global warming.’

Is this the way of the world in the 21st Century – or is it just California?
Better news: ‘the U.S. spokesman for Ikea, a Swedish company, said he doubted the lawsuit would halt the project.’

Maybe everyone is just playing their role in the game 😉

  1. Keith Willshaw says:

This really should be no surprise coming from the Peoples Republic of Burbank.

This is the city where retailers were accused of fascism because they objected to homeless people defaecating in their shop doorways.

  2. Joe Public says:

“‘The lawsuit ……. also claims the report did not properly assess the project’s water supplies since the store will generate emissions that will exacerbate global warming.’”

    Exactly as breeding Californians do.

  3. This is an issue for the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The whole point of California’s ban is restraint of trade.

Has anyone seen any other company that is more nutty about Greeness than IKEA?

IKEA’s management seems to have gone completely bonkers, but even so California seems ready to show they are even more bonkers.

The WTO will not accept that argument. The best that California can hope for is a tie.

A cynic might wonder if the enviros are really just manoeuvring for an IKEA ‘bung’ as an out-of-court settlement 😉

  5. Martin A says:

My idea of Hell is being trapped in IKEA.

  6. Brian H says:

    Californian stupidity is infinite.
