New: WordPress site search facility

Co-moderator writes: as is my way I jury rig workarounds for limitations, what engineering people do. String, sealing wax, knotted handkerchiefs. And… simple so it is understood.

Click the image, preset Google search opens, add your search words at the end and go find.

New? I’ve not seen this done before.

The WordPress problem.

WordPress is good but a compromise. We use the professionally managed cloud hosted version by Automattic the owners of WordPress. This has various restrictions, largely for security reasons. I’ll take security, relax.

The search facility provided with a blog is for not wonderful, blog specialists not search specialists.

There is a WordPress “plugin” which can via a Google account add search to a WordPress site, but only for self-hosted sites, not allowed for professionally managed.

Solution

We can’t do a popup type in text box so assume the user has to use a little brainpower, figure out typing in their own search terms. All we need to do is hint clearly enough.

The image I have created is not pretty, a quick first try. If this facility proves good I might try and produce a more aesthetically pleasing version.

  1. Oh, yeah, this method is one I’ve been using for a couple of years, where you specifically have the word “site” and a colon immediately followed by the url of the site you want to search, followed by (or preceded by) the word to search for. When it comes to my work in researching the origins and spread of the smear of skeptic scientists, I just plunk the word “Gelbspan” into that kind of narrowed search. It’s what has helped me establish that when it comes to basically any prominent person or group repeating Gelbspan’s accusation of ‘skeptics are paid shills of the fossil fuel industry’, they are separated from that guy by 3 degrees or less. (e.g., http://gelbspanfiles.com/?p=1237 )

Watch what kind of glowing references are seen about that guy in our favorite people at RealClimate:

    https://www.google.com/#q=gelbspan+site:realclimate.org

Works here too, of course, but you mostly see my own mentions of Gelbspan.

Suggestions entries don’t appear in ‘Recent Comments’?

    E.g. this one:

Rog mentioned this a couple of days ago, thought I’d fixed it. (had switched off)

Why a setting changed is not known but I’ve now found talk about code changes to do with Recent and very recently WordPress integrating some theme/widget functionality into the core.

    Right now
