What effect does pot-smoking have on green energy fantasies?

Scope for a government-funded survey there perhaps 😉

American Elephants

Steven Hayward noted a recent story from the Denver Post at Powerline. It seems that surging electricity consumption by Colorado’s new marijuana industry is sabotaging Denver’s push to use less energy—as urged  by the White House’s Clean Power Plan to shut down coal-fired power plants because carbon pollution.

Citywide electricity use has been rising at the rate of 1.2 percent a year, and 45 percent of that increase comes from marijuana-growing facilities, Denver officials said Wednesday.

Denver has a goal of capping energy use at 2012 levels. Electricity is a big part of that.

The latest Xcel Energy data show cannabis grow facilities statewide, the bulk of which are in Denver, used as much as 200 million kilowatt hours of electricity in 2014, utility officials said. City officials said 354 grow facilities in Denver used about 121 million kwh in 2013, up from 86 million kwh at 351 facilities in…

I tried to watch a Youtube clip explaining what it was like to be a “sustainability strategist” but feared I was losing the will to live after about 90 seconds of it, so had to give up 😐

@oldbrew; Listening to religious dogma, preached by fanatics, tends to do that. 😉 pg

I live in a county in California that is tempting to drive all cannabis grows indoors with zoning regulation. Out door growing is a public neusense, that must be abated. Meanwhile the Ecoloons are well on their way to crashing the Electrical grid with green mandates by the state government. The governor and his friends are using the “drought” as a wedge to steal water ownership from the farmers to provide water for their new developments along the “High Speed Rail” that they have promoted the state and federal government to build for them at a cost of several 10s of Billions of dollars. Rich people using government to Steal from everyone else.

We don’t need them to protect us from us. We need protection from Special Interest groups. Government has become The Problem! pg

pg: the speaker didn’t look or sound fanatical, but there’s only so much arcane gobbledegook a normal human can withstand 😎

  5. M Simon says:

The indoor growing is due to Federal Prohibition. The Feds like raiding commercial grow ops. In fact grow ops of any size. But bigger is better.

And of course the results of Alcohol Prohibition have taught conservatives (the last bastion of support for the Drug War) nothing. Yes. I know – it was instituted by Progressives. But as in Alcohol Prohibition the Conservatives are the last to give it up. Just look at the results of the 1932 election with respect to prohibition.

You have more endocannabinoid receptors in the body than any other kind.

Alcohol Prohibition was ended in 1933 and pot prohibition was instituted in 1937 with the help of an out of work Prohibition Agent. Harry J. Anslinger. What can we take away from this? Government is stupid and incapable of learning by example.

  6. M Simon says:

But there is quite a bit of hope on the horizon. Just as “no medical use” for cannabis is enshrined into law we can probably get CO2 Causes Global Warming enshrined into law. Science by government fiat is the best kind.

    O, so many pipe dreams!

  8. p.g.sharrow says:

Even on prohibition the “wheels” are beginning to lose their fastenings. The Internet is the “new way” for information dissemination outside of the control of the Elites that want to RULE us all..

Hopi prophecy for this time. “The new world begins when a net covers the world”

Central control like socialism looks wonderful in theory, but, never works for long in practice.

    We don’t need them. pg

Colorado’s Rocky Mountain high delusional dream of “Clean Energy” brought down by Pot Growers over-enthusiasm. How apt.

  10. E.M.Smith says:

Gee turning a relatively cheap commodity (electricity via coal) into a very high margin and profit crop… no wonder they are aganst it and having angst…

Indoor growing gives fewer pest problems, better growth, and superior product (more control of life cycle and nutrients, and year round). A small shed ( 8 or 10 feet on a side or about 9 sq meters) yields a few $ Thousand per month. (Don’t ask… it was a long time ago and not me…but “a friend”… off grid so no meter tattling and roof solar panels on standoffs w insulated walls to block IR signature helpful. ) Friend who managed realestate for a living had one house stop paying rent after a few months. Investigation found the inside lined with foil, a couple of feet of dirt throughout, and an estimated $50, 000 profit based on area and market rates. Likely several times that now. Set up, growout, harvest, move before found.

Hydroponics, aquaponics, and similar are the future, and not just for lettuce.

There is a silver lining in this, when global cooling starts taking a toll on outdoor crops, the pot growers will have fine tuned efficient methods of growing food indoors. /sarcasm/
