Glacial Advance During The Little Ice Age

Interesting historical round-up from Paul Homewood, which concludes:
‘There is no written law of nature that says glaciers should be the size they were in Victorian times.’

Update – see also the follow-up post: Rapid Retreat Of Glaciers In Early 20thC

By Paul Homewood

From HH Lamb’s “Climate, History and the Modern World”

We know that sea levels have risen since the late 19thC, and that much of this is due to melting of glaciers and ice sheets. However, we also know that the same glaciers were growing rapidly during the Little Ice Age, so can we say that 20thC sea level rise is anything other than a natural process?

Let’s remind ourselves of just how great and widespread this glacial advance was.

The history of glacial advance in the European Alps is well documented. Historian, Brian Fagan, offers us this horrifying account:

    The only similarity I can detect in these two photos is the ridgeline of the upper appearing as a rudimentary “replication” in the far background of the lower. That suggests to me the lower is a wide angle view of the region, and as such misleads a person into thinking the glacier was more extensive in 1750.

    Even with cropping and zooming of the lower photo to try to match the upper, the perspective is not identical and the upper photo has nonlinearities as compared to the lower photograph. The upper drawing is more an impressionist’s artwork and thus makes it subjective rather than evidentiary.

    I see no direct evidence of larger glacier existence in 1750 from this, and if anything, growth since that time–if the two can be made to resemble each other. Contrary to the assertion in the caption, they are not the same view, and nothing definitive can be concluded about the glacier.

    JB, you have voiced my thoughts about this. They do not do accurate comparisons with anything subject to climate ‘science’ for fear that they will be shown up doing social engineering rather than real science.

  3. tom0mason says:

    As this is put forward as evidence for climate change, social engineering is all that is needed. Modern ‘Climate science’ aka weather worrying, is all about social engineering and very little else, Initially pushed, as it was, by the likes of the UN’s Maurice Strong as a method of wealth redistribution, it has continued on it worrysome path of the politics of socialism.
    ~~~~ Some quotes from M. Strong ~~~~
    Strong on national sovereignty at the opening session of the 1992 Earth Summit…
    “The concept of national sovereignty has been an immutable, indeed sacred, principle of international relations. It is a principle which will yield only slowly and reluctantly to the new imperatives of global environmental cooperation. It is simply not feasible for sovereignty to be exercised unilaterally by individual nation states, however powerful. The global community must be assured of environmental security.” -Maurice Strong at the 1992 Earth Summit.
    Strong responding to a question by a reporter asking why he gave large donations to both political parties in the United States during the 1988 election cycle…
    “Because I wanted influence in the United States.” -Maurice Strong quoted in Saturday Night magazine.
    Strong on the impending global environmental catastrophe…
    “If we don’t change, our species will not survive… Frankly, we may get to the point where the only way of saving the world will be for industrial civilization to collapse.” -Maurice Strong quoted in the September 1, 1997 edition of National Review magazine.
    Strong discussing the role the Earth Summit would play in the emerging system of global governance…
    “[The Earth Summit will play an important role in] reforming and strengthening the United Nations as the centerpiece of the emerging system of democratic global governance.” -Maurice Strong quoted in the September 1, 1997 edition of National Review magazine.
    Christiana Figueres, Al Gore, Soros and many, many more carry on this aim for the UN — A new World Order and the One World Government financed by socialist One World Taxation (currently ‘Carbon Tax’).
  5. A C Osborn says:
    There is absolutely no doubt that the Glacier has retreated a long way since 1750.
    1750 was in the middle of a little Ice Age, but the majority of the retreat was before 1900.
    The BBC does not do History from before it was founded where “Climate” is concerned.
    You won’t see any programs about the very extreme cold being experienced by the Northern Hemisphere.
    Little Ice Age glaciers in Britain: Glacier–climate modelling in the Cairngorm Mountain
    It is widely believed that the last glaciers in the British Isles disappeared at the end of the Younger Dryas stadial (12.9–11.7 cal. kyr BP). Here, we use a glacier–climate model driven by data from local weather stations to show for the first time that glaciers developed during the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the Cairngorm Mountains.
    . . .
    These results are supported by the presence of small boulder moraines well within Younger Dryas ice limits
    Paper: Little Ice Age glaciers in the Mediterranean mountains [2014]
    Glaciers were much larger and more numerous during the Little Ice Age. Small glaciers even existed as far south as the High Atlas of Morocco and the Sierra Nevada of southern Spain.
    Central Andes of Argentina:
    The LIA maximum advance [of glaciers] occurred between cal. yr 1550 and 1720 AD, and a re-advance occurred around cal. yr 1830 AD.
    NB Mount Tambora volcanic eruption took place in 1815:
    The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora was one of the most powerful eruptions in recorded history and is the most recent known Volcanic Explosivity Index-7 event.
    The ash from the eruption column dispersed around the world and lowered global temperatures
    Oldbrew did you read the comments on that article?
    A certain Rexx has really drunk the cool aid and actually believes Extreme Weather is getting worse along with Wild Fires, absolutely no clue whatsoever.
  10. oldbrew says:
    ACO – it’s possible there could be an increase in some types of ‘extreme weather’ under way.
    However the causes of that are more likely to be solar-related than anything to do with trace gases IMO. For example look at the changes in jet stream patterns in the last few years. Piers Corbyn has strong views about that as you may have read or heard (e.g. in various Youtube videos by him).
    The warmists keep trying to muscle in by claiming jet streams are subject to man-made changes somehow.
