Britain’s ageing ice cream vans are belching out pollution

Even buying an ice cream from a van could be a health hazard, in Britain at least, according to the Mail on Sunday’s roadside test results. A pre-existing condition might be triggered by the fumes, they say. The anti-diesel campaign rumbles on.

Diesel-engined ice cream vans are spewing out dangerously high levels of a deadly pollutant which is especially harmful to young children, a Mail on Sunday investigation has revealed.

The engines are kept running while the vans are parked to power their fridges, leaving queuing families to breathe in a pollutant that can trigger asthma attacks after just a few minutes’ exposure and is responsible for thousands of deaths each year.


Known as black carbon, the soot-like substance is particularly dangerous for babies and stunts the growth of children’s lungs as well as causing cancer and dementia.

Our reporters found families being exposed to levels of black carbon more than 40 times the limit recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The readings were so high that a leading expert in children’s health warned even a one-off exposure for ten minutes could cause serious problems for a youngster with existing breathing problems.

Professor Jonathan Grigg, head of paediatric respiratory medicine at Queen Mary University of London, said: ‘Certainly, in the case of a child with asthma there is a risk that exposure to black carbon at the levels you have recorded could bring on an attack.’

    Ice cream is bad for you in the first place. Adding a little pollution does not change anything.

    Good golly, that red one must at least 6 years old! Oh, the horror.
    In California, ice cream vans are at least 30 years old. At least they run on gasoline, oops petrol, when they run.
    I bet the same icky music is in the UK and the new world.

    @oldbrew – Now THAT’S an “ageing” ice cream van! – “R” reg and powered by the legendary (as in gutless, noisy and polluting) Ford 2.5DI diesel engine…

    So, we have the EPA admitting they lied to Congress about particulates and the reality is there is not one scrap of actual physical evidence linking particulates (PM2.5) at any of the levels we are likely to encounter even on a bad day and cancer or any respiratory issues that are often glibly attributed. Any numbers that are quoted turn out to be statistically created with no causal connection. That is why the EPA has been doing human gassing experiments, to find a connection. Yes its illegal.

    The story is the same with all the noise about Nitrous Oxides. Tim Cullen has done the work https://malagabay.wordpress.com/2016/09/21/eu-noxious-emissions/ and the irony is all the numbers, again statically driven are based on NO2, and not the transitory NOX that a diesel or petrol engine produces.

    A quick recap on why NOx is produced in any internal combustion engine. N2 is 78% of the atmosphere and 78% of what goes in the cylinder or combustion chamber. Any excess O2 that is not required for combustion with the hydrocarbon fuel will often combine with N2 under the heat and pressure of combustion. Gas turbines and Diesels that rely on compression for ignition require an excess of O2 for complete combustion whereas petrol/gas with spark ignition requires an exact ratio, and is why spark ignited engines produce CO (the indisputable king of killer gases) as there is never enough Oxygen. EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) was the first technology used to reduce NOx in diesel in cylinder, but this has been supplemented or replaced by SCR (selective catalytic reduction) as this allows the engine to run more efficiently with the NOx reduced in the exhaust stream. It also reduces particulates taking the load of the trap if required. Diesel emissions are so low regulators can’t measure any further reduction, despite the bull you read in the press

    Given all the above the new direct injection in cylinder petrol engines now produce more particulates than diesels, and generally are not living up to the hype about fuel economy. So our Politians and activists have once again picked a loser.
