Two Decades of Temperature Data from Australia – Not Fit for Purpose – Jennifer Marohasy

What is going on with Australian temperature data? It doesn’t look good, as Jennifer Marohasy explains.

Australia is a large continent in the Southern Hemisphere. The temperatures measured and recorded by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology contribute to the calculation of global averages.

These values, of course, suggest catastrophic human-caused global warming. Two decades ago the Bureau replaced most of the manually-read mercury thermometers in its weather stations with electronic devices that could be read automatically – so since at least 1997 most of the temperature data has been collected by automatic weather stations (AWS).

Before this happened there was extensive testing of the devices – parallel studies at multiple site to ensure that measurements from the new weather stations tallied with measurements from the old liquid-in-glass thermometers.

There was even a report issued by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) entitled ‘Instruments and Observing Methods’ (Report No. 65) that explained because the modern electronic probes being installed across Australia reacted more quickly to second by second temperature changes, measurements from these devices need to be averaged over a one to ten-minute period to provide some measure of comparability with the original thermometers.

The same report also stated that the general-purpose operating range of the new Australian electronic weather stations was minus 60 to plus 60 degrees Celsius. This all seems very sensible, well-documented, and presumably is now Bureau policy.

Except, this winter I have discovered none of this policy is actually being implemented.

Continued here.

UPDATE 7/9/17
Vindicated: Bureau acknowledges limits set on how cold temperatures can be recorded – by JM

Vindicated: Bureau not following WMO guidelines – by JM

Reblogged this on WeatherAction News and commented:

it could be that the last 20-years of temperature recordings by the Bureau will be found not fit for purpose, and will eventually need to be discarded…I am reminded of a quote from the late Christopher Hichens: The tribe that confuses its totems and symbols with reality has succumbed to fetishism and may be more in trouble than it realises.

  2. Ned Nikolov says:

In an effort to make the physical world conform to a 19th-Century nonphysical theory (i.e. the “Greenhouse” concepts), the intentional manipulation of data records risks to leave us as poorly informed (or misinformed) about the true state of our planet as medieval men despite driving on a 21st century information highway!

the usual suspects have once again put their thumb on the scale. Follow the money.

Perhaps this data business could get a mention.

Jo Nova: When the newspapers run a headline with Sydney hits, say, 44.4 degrees and that number gets engraved in history, who realizes that the extreme heat may have only lasted one second?

The Global Temperature Record Is A Complete Fake

    JM writes today:
The Minister phoned me late yesterday to let me know that the report had just been published, and that the Bureau’s investigations confirmed that Goulburn and Thredbo were the only sites where temperature records had been affected by the inability of some Bureau AWS to read low temperatures.

What are the chances? Of the nearly 700 weather stations, I stumbled across the only two with problems.

    It’s not getting any better…

In summary, given the Bureau is taking one-second extrema, rather than following its own published guidelines (Instruments and Observing Methods Report No. 65, WMO/TD No. 862) recordings taken by the Bureau over the last twenty years from automatic weather stations across Australia may not be fit for purpose. In particular, temperature measurements from Australia since at least 1990 have not been recorded consistent with calibration, and therefore are likely to be invalid?

The solution must surely be to put JM in charge of the whole thing 🙂

  9. Russell Johnson says:

The guidelines are simply a lie to fool the population into believing the Bureau’s methods and standards are scientific. Limiting recording of low temperatures gives them deniability allowing them to say “the temperatures reported are accurate and unadjusted—-bullshit” The opposite is true in the US where weather stations are located at airports, on parking lots or in urban heat islands–all designed to give the highest possible temperature readings. As stated earlier the global temperature record is a complete and utter fake.

  10. reetsmeets says:

Man has known for decades the problems arising with greenhouse gasses, let alone all the energy the planet had/has to absorb through man made bombs over the years. The energy has to transfer to somewhere? All of this will therefore affect/effect the magnetics, the ozone, the axsis and many more things. Man has to realize that they can no longer keep up with not using everything available to them offered by the planet to make their own energy instead of using fossil fuels and so on. We all have to compensate for all the wrong we have allowed to happen on this wonderful and unique Planet. We over consume everything and then basically trash the planet, maybe less is more in the long term.

  11. oldbrew says:

Water vapour is by far the biggest so-called greenhouse gas. Why don’t we hear anything about that in the media?

CO2 is a very minor player.
