White winter in the USA

Battered by the bomb cyclone which brought heavy snow and flooding to a swathe of the US, America is facing the threat of the big chill says the Daily Telegraph.

As workers started shovelling away the mountain of snow, temperatures started plunging.

They plummeted to as low as -20C (-4F) in many parts of New England. In Caribou, northern Maine, the wind chill was poised to bring the reading down to -40C (-40F).

According to the National Weather Service, the lowest temperature on Friday, -41C (-42F), was recorded at Embarrass, Minnesota. On the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, forecasters expect the biting winds to make it feel as if it was -100F (-70C).

Some parts of the US are bracing themselves for the coldest temperatures on record over the next few days, with the lowest readings expected on Sunday morning.

Such is the cold that there are fears that they will render useless the grit used to make roads passable.

Experts warned that bitterly cold temperatures pose a serious health risk, with frostbite taking hold swiftly.

“Any kind of exposed skin can freeze in a couple of minutes.” Wind chill describes the combined effect of wind and low temperatures on bare skin,” Dan Pydynowski, a meteorologist with private forecasting service AccuWeather.

The cold snap is already estimated to have claimed at least 19 lives.

METEOROLOGIST BLASTS THOSE LINKING BRUTAL BLIZZARD TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Date: 06/01/18 The Washington Times

Meteorologist Joe Bastardi had a decidedly unscientific term for the effort to link Thursday’s frigid winter storm to human-caused climate change: “witchcraft.”

I don’t know what all the fuss is about – this is only weather not climate /sarc

At least if any sceptics say anything about it that will be the reply given.

  2. I wonder how much PV power is generated today in the states?

Not your average US winter weather…

BBC: US shivers amid record-breaking low temperatures

North America’s East Coast is shivering in a record-breaking freeze in the wake of a deadly “bomb cyclone” that dumped snow as far south as Florida.

In parts of US and Canada, temperatures were forecast to fall below -20F (-29C), with wind chill making it feel more like -90F (-67C) on Friday night.

In Canada, high winds have knocked out power for tens of thousands of residents in Nova Scotia.

Thousands of snow ploughs are clearing roads across the US East Coast.

On Friday, the National Weather Service (NWS) predicted dangerously low temperatures moving into the weekend as frigid air lingering over the North Pole prowls towards the US mid-Atlantic region.

“An arctic outbreak will keep temperatures 20F to 30F degrees below average across the north-eastern US,” the NWS said, adding that there was a “chance for many daily temperature records to be broken”.

Natural gas prices in the US north-east have risen to an all-time high, driven by demand for heating fuel.

NB the -90F refers to Mount Washington.

It’s been cold in Chicago, mostly just annoyingly cold.

    Quote from todays paper: (1/5/2018)
“tomorrow will be the twelfth straight day with temperatures remaining below 20 degrees. This has happened only twice on record in Chicago. Back in 1895 and 1936 we also had 12 consecutive days below 20. The streak will end Sunday with highs getting back to near freezing.”

All this cold comes from a place that was said by climate alarmisits to be ‘super hot’ just over a year ago.

Guardian, Nov. 2016: ‘Extraordinarily hot’ Arctic temperatures alarm scientists

Danish and US researchers say warmer air and sea surface could lead to record lows of sea ice at north pole next year

    http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/nov/22/extraordinarily-hot-arctic-temperatures-alarm-scientists

It was ‘surprising, alarming, shocking, unprecedented, a clear trend’…blah blah…

NOAA predicted a mild winter for the USA but, when they get severe cold instead, alarmists claim it’s what they expected.

Europe weather: Heavy snowfall in Alpine regions leaves skiers stranded

Winter storms have swept across western Europe, with the blizzard conditions turning chairlifts into swings and leaving thousands of people stranded in ski resorts.

Heavy snowfall saw the avalanche risk raised in Alpine regions across Italy, France and Switzerland, and resulted in the closure of roads and railways leading into popular resorts.

Up to 10,000 tourists were stuck at the Cervinia ski resort in Italy, local media reported.
