Climate change: UK report suggests drastic reduction of sheep and cattle numbers

English sheep

Sadly no, we’re not making this up. This is what a dumbed-down pseudo-religious belief in failing climate models and theories can lead to.

The number of sheep and cattle in the UK should be reduced by between a fifth and a half to help combat climate change, a report says.

The shift is needed, the government’s advisory Committee on Climate Change (CCC) maintains, because beef and lamb produce most greenhouse gases, reports MercoPress.

The number of sheep and cattle in the UK should be reduced by between a fifth and a half to help combat climate change, a report says.

The shift is needed, the government’s advisory Committee on Climate Change (CCC) maintains, because beef and lamb produce most greenhouse gases.

The report foresees an increase in the number of pigs and chickens because these produce less methane. Environmentalists say the recommendations are too timid. The farmers’ union NFU welcomed the report.

The CCC says a 20-50% reduction in beef and lamb pasture could release 3-7m hectares of grassland from the current 12m hectares in the UK. The un-needed grassland could instead grow forests and bio-fuels that would help to soak up CO2.

The committee’s advice on producing less red meat is less radical than NHS Eatwell guidelines on healthy eating, which proposes a reduction in consumption of 89% for beef and 63% for lamb, and a 20% decline in dairy products.

The chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), Chris Stark, told BBC News: “Climate change is going to change the way the UK looks – and we also have to alter the way we use land so we don’t make climate change worse.”

  1. Stephen Richards says:

FFS. Are these people REALLY this stupid?

I guess they must be. OMG it’s time to throw out these idiots everywhere and return to sanity

  2. Stephen Richards says:

An increase in porc should please our muslim friends.

  3. peterandnen says:

Most methane in the atmosphere gets there by natural microbiological processes involving decaying cellulose in marshland.
The worst man-made sources (according to the IPCC) would be rice farming giving off some 50Tg (50000000000 kg) per annum. If methane is a problem for environmentalists, they could start by draining wetlands in the UK. Then, say culling farting badgers (also reducing carbon dioxide from burning cows with TB).
What right have these idiots to deny me my steak and kidney or shepherds pie?

  4. ivan says:

Yes Stephen, they are that stupid – it is called being brainwashed by the cult of climatology.

I don’t know what they will do when they learn that humans produce CO2 when we exhale, maybe their brains will explode (we can always live in hope).

  5. JB says:

The coming crop failures from the deepening cold will take care of the problem, and maybe it will take care of these persons as well. Already on this side cattle are being sold off early for the lack of grazing pasture from early cold/snow.

  6. oldmanK says:

Its ‘damned if you don’t, damned if you do’. Its damned either way; see Professor Valentina Zharkova at go to 45:30

  7. dennisambler says:

The farmers’ union NFU welcomed the report. They would, they can see public money for not farming.

This is so ridiculous that maybe it’s a good thing for them to come up with. The more foolish they look, maybe the more people will start to question the “Authority of Experts”. Ban diesels, ban coal and oil, ban sheep and cows, ban life.

Grow more trees… As Marie Antoinette mght have said, let them eat bark

  8. oldbrew says:

Maybe they hope to bury this barmy news on the day the Brexit poo hits the fan 😉

  9. Bob Greene says:

Are they planning to ban by rationing the amount of meat people can have? If not, they have just shifted the sheep and cattle production somewhere else. But that seems to be the UK/EU method for reducing GHG emissions, ship producing activities off shore.

  10. Curious George says:

Forget beefsteaks and a rack of lamb. Go frogs.

  11. oldbrew says:

Why take a bite out of this?

Total lamb exports from the UK reached £330 million in 2016

  12. Saighdear says:

But the veggies want Bleeding burgers ! … Mmmm ( no – not mmmm for tasty ) . so they get some of the red sap from some bleedin trees ? Cover the planet with trees – won’t be able to see the rot for the trees, woodworm will be endemic. Dam’ rot already that way in the Soil o’ e Earth. Dry Rot in e Brain cavities … think about it…. Spin a Fog and disappear to cause more grief … that’s all those bummers are doing. As for the NFU Mannie – a dam disgrace to the farming industry – was educated as a FOOD farmer or a Subsidy farmer ?

  13. Kip Hansen says:

Sheep, at least, are not pastured on land suitable for forests in the UK, are they? Not anywhere I have ever seen.

Don’t know about cattle — maybe hay fields could be used for something else — just maybe.

  14. Saighdear says:

@ Kip Hansen: Years ago, Good Agric teaching Taught ! – taught how livestock could thrive on the margins of productive arable land without much additional cost – indeed on large enough Arable estates ( have since got sooo much bigger thru’ amalgamation / takeovers etc ), they can just about justify the cost of a dedicated herder. Huh, as for Forests in the Uk , IMO it is downright criminal / unethical to be planting out reclaimed agric land for forests: in the memory of our Forefathers who cleared the land of trees and stones to provide food for a progressing civilisation. We see not just Marginal land but small awkward parcels( awkward for large machines ) of good Land being used for tree production – not just young tree nurseries. In the future, it will become a Bulldozer job (high energy input) to rid the land of stumps,) and find that according to the types of trees – soil mineral leaching can occur – Pinewoods, etc. Broadleaved trees taking a very long time to mature and be useful.
Cattle shouldn’t be grazed on “hayfields” but used as part of the Rotation, like the sheep, to graze waste products: The grass mixtures used as a Break toget rid of Weed species and regain Soil Structure & OM fertility. Instead, where once we used the Straws for Animal Feed and Bedding to give us FYM as the OM source, the Political Accountant and EU tells us what to do wqith our crops – straw for fuel, Maize grain ALSO for fuel. We needn’t go “Organic” but Farming can be well balanced but needs to keep weed species and Pests at bay – you want beasties poop in your food? …. Essays and books have been written – but I shudder on hearing what modern ( non-farming) Agric science students are taught nowadays. – maybe like “How to milk the system” ?

  15. Bitter@twisted says:

    CCC Climate Contricks Cartel

  16. manicbeancounter says:

Do they still teach geography in schools nowadays? Britain is a small country with less than 1% of the global population and just over 1% of global GHG emissions. Methane emissions are a small part of those emissions.
When the Government passed the Climate Change Act 2008 it was supposed to be leading the world. If the Government looked behind at the daft trail they are blazing they will find no other countries are following. But reducing emissions is just a bandwagon for minority ideologues like radicalised vegetarians, to impose their beliefs on the rest of us.

  17. DAVID ROWE says:

It beggars belief that animals farting causes climate change, it borders on a mental illness. They want to cut cattle & sheep numbers in the UK by 50%, only one slight problem with this madness, total CO2 is a miserly 0.04%, so lets hazard a guess & estimate emissions from the said beasts =
000000000000000000000001%, so how on earth can that alter our climate? Its enough to make one take to drink, the scenario is insanity on steroids.

  18. oldbrew says:

Let’s hope they don’t start investigating human farts 😎

  19. stpaulchuck says:

I agree with manicbeancounter and the others. This is nothing to do with global warming. This is just another attempt by the bunny huggers to stop us eating meat. Mmmmmmmmmmmm, bacon on the stove. Yummy. Steaks or burgers for dinner, woo hoo!
