Crunch time for the climate at COP24 ?

They always say that, don’t they? Another round of ‘save the world’ delusional climate blarney is underway, as leaders and their vast delegations pretend to be able to ‘protect’ the global climate in whatever way they think they should. Hosts Poland find themselves under fire for relying heavily on locally-mined coal to generate electricity.

It was just three years ago. But the euphoric celebrations in Paris now seem a distant memory, says

The United Nations’ 190-plus states had finally wrestled together an agreement that the Earth’s temperature shouldn’t rise by more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels. Better still, that it should go up by considerably less.

“This is a historic moment for climate protection,” then-German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks told DW at the time. “Most children alive today will still be here towards the end of this century. And that’s why it’s important that it doesn’t heat up more than 2 degrees.”

Now, as delegates from around the world prepare to meet again, this time in Katowice, Poland, the euphoria has dissipated.

Solidarity shows cracks

A year after the Paris Agreement, Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. It wasn’t long before he withdrew from the climate treaty.

“As President, I have one obligation, and that obligation is to the American people,” Trump said at a press conference in the garden of the White House, claiming that the climate agreement would hurt the US economy and jobs and undermine the country’s sovereignty. Others, including Iraq, Iran and Russia, are yet to ratify the treaty. And in Australia and Brazil, right-wing and nationalist governments have gained power, pushing climate protection off the agenda.

Meanwhile, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a body of around 900 scientists from around the world, warns that cutting emissions couldn’t be more urgent.

Since they seem to be so concerned with CO2 can we assume they are not all flying there or using cars when they need to get about? /sarc

This whole comic-fest is nothing but an exercise in virtue signalling and pontificating about how we plebs should do as we are told while they ignore completely what they say.

  2. Gamecock says:

‘agreement that the Earth’s temperature shouldn’t rise by more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels.’

This is all fakey fake fake.

    We don’t know pre-industrial earth’s temperature.

  3. cognog2 says:

Doubt any of them know what global temperature is. I don’t, mainly because they don’t seem to be able to measure it’s elusive definition. Yearning after whatever it was in the 50s doesn’t seem to be much of an objective.

They know that the cycle of colder, warmer, colder has shifted as it must, so they are desperate to save themselves from the end of their con-game. No fear! they will shift their argument as the evidence shifts. Man caused cooling, warming, drought and flood the story has been always the same. For over 6,000 years the Religion of Man caused Global Climate Change has been with us as the Greedy Evil Bastards vie for power and wealth. No MORE ! We don’t need them !

Weather and climate will change, as it has done for millennia and we will adapt as we must.
It is time to end the World of the GEBs with their Religious lust for wealth and power. They are selling promises that can’t be fulfilled in exchange for slavery to them. We don’t need Them…pg .

  8. stpaulchuck says:

    cognog2, I totally agree.

I always ask two questions: 1) how do you measure the absolute global climate temperature in light of the fact nearly half the planet has no temperature measuring devices? and 2) what is the ideal global absolute climate temperature?

You’ll get a lot of duck speak and attempts to move off to an argument about something you never said, etc., but to date no one has EVER answered properly even one of those questions.

  9. Graeme No.3 says:

“in Australia and Brazil, right-wing and nationalist governments have gained power, pushing climate protection off the agenda” – I think they meant Austria.
Our politicians in Australia are as stupid and gullible as any in the rest of the World. Possibly more so, as I see from the BBC chart of percent emissions by countries that those emitting 58% of CO2 aren’t doing anything to reduce emissions whereas our numbskulls want even higher curbs on our miniscule level.

  10. Gamecock says:

    1) how do you measure the absolute global climate temperature in light of the fact nearly half the planet has no temperature measuring devices?

By satellite. Since 1979. All before is intrigue. All non-satellite since is fakey fake fake.

  11. dai davies says:

We could agree to consider CO2 reduction if untampered temperatures started to rise significantly. I think we’d be safe with that. Now let’s get serious about how we deal with cold. Lower electricity prices would be a good start. I’ve got skin in that game. I still haven’t recovered from my last bill.

only one major problem with the satellite measurements Gamecock. They are not direct measurements and everyone with a dog in the fight is using different conversions to get the “temperature” so there is STILL no consistent, absolute measurement.

[from Wikipedia, I know not the most reliable source in the world but good for this discussion]

Satellites do not measure temperature. They measure radiances in various wavelength bands, which must then be mathematically inverted to obtain indirect inferences of temperature.[1][2] The resulting temperature profiles depend on details of the methods that are used to obtain temperatures from radiances. As a result, different groups that have analyzed the satellite data have produced differing temperature datasets. Among these are the UAH dataset prepared at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and the RSS dataset prepared by Remote Sensing Systems.

The satellite time series is not homogeneous. It is constructed from a series of satellites with similar but not identical sensors. The sensors also deteriorate over time, and corrections are necessary for orbital drift and decay.[3][4] Particularly large differences between reconstructed temperature series occur at the few times when there is little temporal overlap between successive satellites, making intercalibration difficult.

Presented by Sir David Attenborough – or not…

  16. Gamecock says:

Satellite temperature measurement, regardless of how flawed, is the ONLY global atmospheric temperature measurement we have. There is no other. If you reject satellite temperature measurement, there is NO MEASUREMENT OF EARTH’S TEMPERATURE.

Pronouncements of GMT anomalies have NO BASIS IN FACT. DOUBLE OUGHT ZERO.

  17. oldbrew says:

Gamecock – re. If you reject satellite temperature measurement, there is NO MEASUREMENT OF EARTH’S TEMPERATURE.

The conundrum being that this leaves the door open to biased interpretations of the satellite data.

  18. Gamecock says:

Of course. But I trust Dr Roy Spencer.

  19. oldbrew says:

Sure, but it’s still a young science and that includes the satellites themselves.

Germany tops up clean air programme with one billion euros to prevent diesel bans

    Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

The German government has vowed to provide an additional one billion euros to the country’s clean air programme in a bid to prevent diesel driving bans that loom in many German cities, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports. The programme then will have funds of nearly 2 billion euros until 2020 to finance the switch to low-emission vehicles, more public transportation options and other measures to improve air quality in German cities and municipalities.

Maybe all those VW dieselgate fines will cover it 😐

COP 24: The church of climate fear
    By David Wojick | December 4th, 2018

The mainstream press coverage of the beginning of the Katowice climate summit is sad but fascinating. There is a uniformly dogmatic sense of urgency based on fear, with very little news and a great deal of preaching. Fear is the dominant theme.

I truly pity the people who hold these false beliefs, as they must be afraid of the future. But I am not sympathetic with the alarmism, because it makes people dangerous. The preachers are calling on the faithful to change the world we live in, and not in a good way. Fear makes people angry and angry people are dangerous.

‘Civilisation faces collapse, Attenborough warns UN.’ That was the Times headline on Tuesday about the great broadcaster’s speech at the latest climate change conference in Poland.

In theory, Sir David is always worth hearing. Nevertheless, his solemn warning was made less effective by the decision to print it at the bottom of page 17. I cannot help feeling that this adverse news judgment was entirely correct.

  23. Henning Nielsen says:

The Poles should take the criticism seriously, and turn off the coal-powered heating for the 20.000 or so participants. Let them warm their hearts from this climate-saving action.
