Alps weather: Heavy snow cuts off ski resorts

‘Here we go again’ says Climate Depot. ‘Climate activists are once again claiming that *global warming* is causing record-breaking snow.’ Forgetting perhaps that it has to be cold to snow, otherwise moisture falls as rain. Also forgetting their earlier claims that Alpine snow would tend to disappear for exactly the reason that is now supposed to make it worse.

UK Guardian By Kate Ravilious
Excerpt: Look at all that snow in the Alps; has global warming taken a break?

Alas, no, it turns out that the recent record-breaking dumps of snow across much of southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria are more likely a consequence of global warming.

Why? Balmy temperatures in the North Sea and Baltic Sea are cooking up the ideal conditions to create snow.

Right now, average surface water temperatures in the North Sea are about 8C (46F), while the Baltic Sea is hovering at about 3C (37F).

It might sound bracing, but as data from the Danish Meteorological Institute shows, these numbers are a good couple of degrees warmer than average for the time of year.

And herein lies the problem. “Global warming enhances the current snowfall … Anomalously high sea surface temperatures in the North Sea and Baltic are loading winds from the north with moisture,” tweeted Stefan Rahmstorf of the University of Potsdam last week.

Oh dear, I suppose they have to try and keep the myth going and so keep the money trough full no matter how stupid their utterances are.

I can’t imagine what they are going to do when it keeps on cooling, maybe someone will crawl out of the woodwork and say the 1970 predictions were correct just a little early and we need more money to investigate.

From Newspeak comes doublethink, “the act of simultaneously accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct,”

    Orwell pre-empted Twitter:

…”for someone to even recognize—let alone mention—any contradiction within the context of the Party line was akin to blasphemy, and could subject that person to disciplinary action and to the instant social disapproval of fellow Party Members.”

  9. Phoenix44 says:

If the snow is caused by conditions elsewhere, then it’s just weather, unless you can show that the conditions elsewhere are caused by Climate Change. The seas might be warmer than average, but are they warmer than ever before? I very, very much doubt it. So it’s weather.

  10. Climate change is endangering one of our best loved species.

The drive to reduce carbon dioxide levels by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels is having unintended consequences as we close coal mines across the planet.

    A spokesman for SPOD, the Society for the Protection of Dragons, Mr. Draed Goke explained;
“Dragons have survived the millennia, even the extinction of the dinosaurs, but as coal disappears the Dragon population is decreasing to dangerously low levels and may soon face extinction unless their food source is protected. We call on governments around the globe to ensure adequate supplies of our staple diet are made available. We particularly call on the Welsh Government to keep available supplies of Welsh Steam Coal, the most healthy food for our kind, to ensure the national symbol of Wales continues to flourish.

Perhaps the “polar vortex” sitting over the hudson bay has something to do with channeling southern air up into the north atlantic…………… meanwhile we are going sub zero F in Iowa, and got another 6-8 inches of snow last night. What will it take to move the “polar vortex” back to the pole?

  12. Stephen Richards says:

Last I looked the North atlantic was cool. The north sea is always coolb and prevailing wind in the NH Is Southwesterly.

Recent snowfall in Europe has been on a north north westerly wind which crosses very little water

  13. Perhaps, perspective matters?
East of iceland 5 degrees C, west of Ireland 10 degrees C—meanwhile here in Iowa it is -9 degrees C………… What temp would you call “warm?
    and…oops
in my above I should have posted “stratospheric” polar vortex

    The assertion now is:
“Global warming enhances the current snowfall ”

Last year it was: “snowfall will decline and alpine ski resorts will struggle to survive”

This [insert current extreme] is exactly what we’d expect to see with climate change. Now hand over the cash and submit to authoritarian rule because we have [insert anything not past its seem by date] years to save the planet and take the money and run before the jig is up

  16. When you look at the number of predictions that have failed, the about turn on warming causes cooling and vice versa, why are the politicians wasting billions on such poor science? Over on WUWT Ocasio-Cortez is bemoaning the deaths of 3000 Americans and that’s sad, but no one seems to care about the 50,100 excess England and Wales deaths last winter, and goodness knows how many in Scotland, who would have welcomed some global warming.

  18. John Farnham says:

How long are we going to accept the representations that ‘climate is not weather.’ ? Of course it is. That does not mean that one day’s activity constitutes a trend, but projecting trends onto a pattern resembling a drunk oscilloscope does not result in a neat trend line easily distinguished from background change.

  19. hunter says:

The ruling class and their lackeys want global warming, so no matter the data, it is global warming.

‘whilst the south could see wetter and occasionally milder spells, bringing the risk of some significant snow, but only if very cold air becomes established across much of the UK.’

Met Office seem to be supporting this view as above forecast today.
So it’s global warmcolding now due to very cold air……………………er….

  23. oldbrew says:

Can warmists not even understand that snow only happens when the air is cold?

  24. ivan says:

oldbrew the obvious answer to your question is NO and the reason for that is because it requires a certain amount of thought and those warmists that follow the UN Church of Climatology doctrine only ‘feel’ things, no rational thought involved at all.

  25. “Drug-resistant superbugs are as big a threat as climate change, the UK health secretary will say as he unveils a new five-year plan to tackle the problem.”

  26. tom0mason says:

It would seem they want it Both Sides, now.
Well that’s OK because ‘It’s cloud illusions I recall I really don’t know clouds at all’ and neither does Stefan Rahmstorf of the University of Potsdam.

As oldbrew says above ‘It’s the jet stream, stupid…’

  27. oldbrew says:

When it comes to clouds, nobody knows.

This diagram illustrates the water cycle (or hydrological cycle). Global warming accelerates evaporation, placing more water vapor in the air. More water vapor generates a a stronger greenhouse effect, since water vapor is a greenhouse gas. However, it may also lead to the formation of more clouds, which might help cool the planet by increasing Earth’s albedo. [bold added]

Major northeastern snowstorms expected to continue with climate change
January 24, 2019 by David Hosansky, National Center for Atmospheric Research

“What this research finds is almost all of the decrease in snow occurs in weaker, more nuisance-type events,” said atmospheric scientist Colin Zarzycki, the author of the study. “The really crippling storms that have major regional impacts on transportation, on the economy, on infrastructure are not significantly mitigated in a warming climate.”

  32. John PAK says:

We’ve just been through a period of higher than average solar activity and the oceans and atmosphere have warmed slightly. That period is over and we’re dropping back to low solar activity so would expect cooler temperatures but the oceans have thermal inertia so logically there should be a period (of years) in-which the oceans are still evaporating but air cools in a matter of days so we should see increased precipitation.
Also, as Oldbrew correctly points out, the jets are wandering and bringing cold dry arctic air into the moist temperate latitudes.
It all looks quite normal and explainable and nothing to do with Mankind.

  33. dolphinwrite says:

It would be an opportunistic time for people to learn about the Earth and the known factors affecting our climate (i.e. sun, internal Earth activities, Earth rotation, terrain and changing terrain, ocean waters and temperature at levels, wind and currents, magnetism, and so forth and so on. It’s quite an eye opener. It’s very interesting. Also, while reading about these factors, they raise so many other questions, some of which might be fuel for research.

  34. It is folly to assume that you can use logic and reason to dissuade someone from a position that they arrived at using neither.

  35. dolphinwrite says:

That’s not entirely true, but experience often demonstrates that. Case in point. A person claimed to be a devout atheist. I explained that very view proved he/she did believe in a god, just that he/she was claiming to be a god. What? the person asked. Well, only a god would be so all-knowing to believe there is no god. You see, it’s a matter of whether you can get to the heart of incorrect beliefs that can awaken some.
