Dr Will Happer

Do we hear the sound of alarmist cages being rattled? A big industry sees itself under threat.

William Happer, a Princeton scientist who is doubtful of the dangers of climate change, appears to be leading a White House challenge to the government’s conclusion that global warming is a threat, says National Public radio.

Twenty five years ago, William Happer had an encounter with the White House that ended badly.

At the time, in 1993, the Princeton professor was taking a break from academia to direct scientific research at the U.S. Department of Energy.

He turned a skeptical eye toward one of then-Vice President Al Gore’s favorite issues: the risks posed by chemicals eating away at ozone in the stratosphere and letting in dangerous ultraviolet radiation.

As the story goes, Happer went to the White House and told Gore’s staff he saw no evidence that the ozone hole actually was hurting anyone.

Gore was annoyed, and Happer lost his job.

Today, Happer is back in the White House, still fighting against what he considers unfounded claims that our globe is in danger. But this time, his cause is backed by the man in the Oval Office.

Continued here.

    His Wikipedia page says:
Happer has no formal training as a climate scientist.

A bit like Al Gore then.

  2. Don B says:

Here is an article by Happer which explains his position on carbon dioxide and climate:

  3. JB says:

I don’t see how Happer, a physicist according to the First Things article, comes anywhere near Al Gore’s technical ignorance, nor True Believer obstinacy. As for delusion, so aptly and ironically elucidated, Happer shares in that tendency as do many other scientists and the public in general. Not the least of which is the contradiction that a greenhouse contains gases apart from those in the atmosphere, while the atmosphere is a giant greenhouse.

Without clearing away this fundamental misunderstanding, the politics of the present administration is destined to remain bogged, in spite of politics’ inherent ability to obfuscate real progress, social or technical.

  4. Ron Clutz says:

This chart of the issue between Happer and Karoly is interesting:

  5. Gamecock says:

Happer is such a refreshing change from Obama’s activist advisers, like John Holdren.

  6. Ron Clutz says:

FYI I have done a synopsis with links to Happer’s Dialogue with Karoly, referenced by the diagram above.

  7. HM says:

In International Journal of Modern Physics v29 2014 “Why has global warming paused” Happer includes, among other things, a long analysis of the main GHG formula used at some point by the IPCC

Happer says both their f and deltaQ2 are wrong. That they assumed f to be 2/3. This is a especially about water vapor, the famous cloud issue.

Mostly he examines the deltaQ2. This requires a detailed analysis of the CO2 absorption spectrum. This part is beyond me but here I try to summarize. He give examples at 390 and 780 PPM (for 16O12C16O). Saying these are not precisely doubled after integration. Due to the vibrational states of CO2 itself (very rough translation: 26 electrons but 40 places), there are three.

Somehow there are collisions and an effect is increased when calculated for 780, resulting that “far-wing absorption” does not happen. The ultimate integration then produces a lower deltaQ2 than the simpler form of the GHG formula does. He says “the inadequacies of the Voigt profile for far-wings of the CO2 band have already been demonstrated experimentally many times”

tldr Happer is a lukewarmist for two reasons, feedback and atmospheric ‘resonance’. ASFAIK he estimates ECS roughly at 1.4

  8. oldbrew says:

They’re going to be chasing their own tails if they still think it’s about ‘climate sensitivity’ to a minor trace gas :/

  9. oldbrew says:

“I think the New Green Deal, or whatever the hell they call it — the Green New Deal — I encourage it,” Mr Trump said mockingly.

“I think it’s really something that they should promote. They should work hard on it… No planes, no energy. When the wind stops blowing that’s the end of your electric. Let’s hurry up, darling, is the wind blowing today? I’d like to watch television, darling.”

  10. Oldbrew, so-called climate scientists know nothing about any subject which is necessary to understand climate and climate changes. Have a look at some of the University courses. None teach heat & mass transfer which is an engineering subject and specifically a chemical engineering subject. It is outlined in chapter 5 of the Chemical Engineers Handbook (but has many details such as derivations not included but referenced). called Heat and Mass Transfer. The authors of the section on heat transfer by radiation Prof Hottel and Prof Sarofin have written a similar section in Marks Mechanical Engineering Handbook which without doubt Roger T knows about. The CE handbook has Thermodynamics in Chapter 4, Chapter 11 is called Heat transfer equipment which goes into equipment such as evaporators, heat exchangers, cryogenic processes, vapor -liquid separation etc . Chapter 12 is called Pschrometry, Evaporative cooling and solids drying. Section 8 is called Process control and includes a section on process measurements (which climate scientist clearly do not understand) and telemetering & transmission) . Chapter 3 in the CE Handbook is called mathematics which has sections on statistics, dimensional analysis (including dimensionless numbers like the Reynolds number, Mach number, Schmidt Number etc) and process simulation & AI. Chapter 6 is called Fluid and Particle Dynamics -necessary for the analysis of ocean currents, jet streams, volcano emissions (something no climate scientist has the least clue about). Chapter 7 is called Reaction Kinetics which include such things as the solution of CO2 in Oceans and the reactions occurring there or the formation of ozone at the edge of the atmosphere or by lightning. or ozone depletion by chemicals. etc.
Gavin Schmidt at NASA Giss who is supposed to be a well known climate scientist admitted he knew nothing about the dimensionless Schmidt number used in mass transfer. and his discussion with a Russian Prof around the formation of cyclones (or hurricanes) showed he had no understanding of heat and mass transfer (particularly about evaporation & condensation)
I do not know about Will Happer but most Physicists have no detailed understand of engineering subjects.. However, there are always a few honest scientists that can read engineering texts in their field of specialist study and can call out mistakes made by less qualified or unqualified persons who call themselves a scientist (eg Gavin Schmidt and his predecessor. )

  11. Graeme No.3 says:

Are you saying Schmidt is dimensionless or delusionable?

And how could many Climate “Scientists” know much science when they studied ‘Climate Science’ as a subset of geography?

  12. rogerglewis says:

First and Last the Climate Alarmism and Population narratives are Imperial and Elitist.
It simply is not about looking for the claimed solutions it’s about keeping the Plebs in Check.

    Be Like Vinnie

Happer is probably Trumps best appointment, sadly the War agenda is very high in the compromised Trump Whitehouse, probably for similar reasons to why Perot temporarily withdrew from the 1990 race.

Trump is through an Oligarch and the US an Oligarchy.

  14. markesommer says:

As a chemical engineer who has studied some atmospheric science I agree with cementafriend! Somehow electric cars charged largely with fossil fuel generated power, and black solar cells emitting more heat than a modern roof are going to save the planet! And the ozone hole over the South pole where there is insufficient sunlight to even create ozone for much of the year is somehow “alarming”. But, a grand solar minimum is not going to affect our climate in the northern hemisphere, eh? Water vapor in a greenhouse does not affect temperature or plant growth, either. Yeah, right.

Trump is though, an Oligarch and the US an Oligarchy. So is Russia, China and The EU and pretty much everywhere else.

I made a post with two video links which is in moderation, long story short, the science is fascinating but does not support the Population control and Imperial Eugenics agendas that have driven Geo Politics for around 150 years.

When Trump was inaugarated he had a picture of Jackson in the Oval Office, I do not know if it is still there. Having Jackson as a hero and Munuchin and various other Wall Street Goldman guys in his administration do not really gell. The Carbin Based Currency, The Debt( Usury) based money system and a deep Misanthropy which is over in the Elites, if you know what His Royal Virus is a reference too you know what I am getting at.

It is not about Science qua science or UR-Science as it were but political science and so forth.

  16. Back in December 2015, for those who missed the news item, Dr Happer was ambushed in the U.S. Senate hearing room by a Greenpeace guy mere minutes before Senator Ted Cruz’s hearing was starting. Greenpeace wanted to use it as ammo to demonstrate how skeptic scientists were corrupt, but the event instead showcased how Greenpeace has never actually had any viable evidence to prove such skeptics were in a pay-for-performance arrangement with the fossil fuel industry; they were forced to concoct new ‘evidence’ out of thin air. I described that whole situation in greater detail here: “Long Established Evidence Proving Skeptic Climate Scientists’ Guilt, Baked Fresh Today!”

  17. rogerglewis says:

@Russell Cook, that’s very interesting Reading your Blog now thanks for the links.

  18. @rogerglewis: Thanks! I cover an angle of the AGW which few others do. Think about it: the collective pile of AGW, ranging from the media reporting about it, to Al Gore’s movie, and all that other rot from Greenpeace, Desmogblog, etc, can all be boiled down to 3 easily memorized talking points — “1) the science is settled” / “2) skeptics are paid oil money to lie” / “3) the public and the media can ignore skeptics because of reasons 1 & 2.” I’d argue that their point #3 is one of the most brilliant bits of propaganda ever, but is also the most vulnerable. If true believers lose all faith in point #2, entire legacies could go down in flames if enviro-activists discover skeptics never were crooks and there is no AGW crisis, and all that money donated to stop AGW only lined the pockets of the One Percenters who run this AGW gravy train, when it could have been used to stop actual environmental calamities.
