UK commits to ‘net zero’ emissions by 2050

Spurious virtue signalling trumps economics and even sanity in UK politics it seems. Belief in the empty box that is man-made climate change will be a massive and futile financial burden to the public. Our leaders are so confused, or keen to confuse everyone else, that they even equate the vital trace gas carbon dioxide with pollution.

Greenhouse gas emissions in the UK will be cut to almost zero by 2050, under the terms of a new government plan to tackle climate change, reports BBC News.

Prime Minister Theresa May said reducing pollution would also benefit public health and cut NHS costs.

Britain is the first major nation to propose this target – and it has been widely praised by green groups.

But some say the phase-out is too late to protect the climate, and others fear that the task is impossible.

The UK already has a 2050 target – to reduce emissions by 80%. That was agreed by MPs under the Climate Change Act in 2008, but will now be amended to the new, much tougher, goal.

The actual terminology used by the government is “net zero” greenhouse gases by 2050.

That means emissions from homes, transport, farming and industry will have to be avoided completely or – in the most difficult examples – offset by planting trees or sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere.

The government’s advisory Committee on Climate Change recommended the “net zero” target in May.

Its report said if other countries followed the UK, there was a 50-50 chance of staying below the recommended 1.5C temperature rise by 2100.

A 1.5C rise is considered the threshold for dangerous climate change.

Full report here.

  1. Time to stock food water and get a generator, oh and something to defend them with. I predict a riot…

If May can’t get her way over Brexit she is determined to destroy the country. Where is the new Cromwell when we need him?

    [reply] Farage?

The UK emits 379 Mte of CO2 per YEAR.

China emits 10,877 Mte of CO2 per year.
(That is 29.8 Mte of CO2 per DAY)

If we could become carbon neutral tomorrow

China will put all that CO2 back into the atmosphere IN JUST 13 DAYS!

Why is this temperature rise of 1.5 degrees by 2100 so important because we will hardly notice it in reality.I think that I heard that this 1.5 degree limit was from the end of the little ice age even less important. We were told a decade ago that we were going to have 4 or 5 degree rise in temperature by 2100 yet they are still trying to make 1.5 degrees sound scary, it looks like we are going to have to have global warming continue for many centuarys to get to there original scenario. Lets invest in nuclear energy and gas to provide the energy we need while lowering the amount of c02 we produce in the future.

    Don’t people realise that
    1. The short pulse of modern Global warming stopped 20 years ago and recent global temperatures are now stable or declining.
    2. The last millennium 1000 – 2000 AD was the coldest of our current Holocene interglacial and the world has already been cooling quite rapidly for the last 3000 years.
    3. At 11,000 years our Holocene interglacial, responsible for all man-kind’s advances, is reaching its end.
    4. The world will soon, (on geological time scales), revert to a true glaciation, resulting in mile high ice sheets over New York again.

That is something to be truly scared about both for the biosphere and for man-kind.

Spending vast amounts to prevent something that has not been happening for 3 millennia seems truly stupid.

To quote Charles Mackay: “Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.”
That aside, Mrs May has evidently swallowed the Koolade lovingly prepared for her by the UK Committee on Climate Change, chaired by Lord Deben who, it is well known is up to his chubby chops in the climate trough. Is it at all possible that Mrs May might have a post-retirement plan that might just slightly overlap with the demesne of this same troughy lord?

  11. Hi Roger. The NiCE geo-re-engineering (new word: get used to it) project is moving forward involving discussions with Ethiopia, Sudan and Ethiopia. Since the last state there is the home of the African Union, it would be hoped that they would be brought into the fold. Unfortunately each country is more concerned in working separately to see how it benefits them, rather than working together to get the job done. I’m trying to get the CCC and various other bodies to deal with reality, but they are still trying to kid themselves that they are part of the decision making process……. SSDD

At the time my analysis was that any group expressing such poor judgement and reactionary thinking would make other mistskes that would cost them their power.
911 happened less than six months later.
So aside from the damage this anti-scientific no rational policy itself will cause, what else will go wrong die to the lack of judgement and character this policy is a manifestation of?

2050 sounds like they don’t really care.

How ’bout 2023? Let’s get busy, and not leave it to future people. Future people could choose not to do anything. They could be selfish and decide that life and prosperity are more important than silly climate games.

Kill the economy NOW, while you still can.

Thank God I escaped to the USA. The UK has “Stupid Government” that defies the will of the people as expressed by the BREXIT vote.

You need a British version of Donald Trump (aka Boris) but if that does not happen expect another Oliver Cromwell.

  15. ivan says:

gallopingcamel, Boris is not the answer because he is well into the green kool-aid and supports many of the green slime projects like spending a few trillion pounds on net-zero emissions.

We do need another Cromwell to clean out parliament before things get really nasty.

  16. gallopingcamel says:

Thanks for the update on Boris. He used to be “The Thinking Man’s Idiot” but anyone who supports the greenies has abandoned reason while embracing socialism.

Is there any way for Farage to become PM? Would he be any good at it?

    Is there anyone else?

  19. edhoskins says:

When will people realise that any CO2 reduction policy should also be seen in a longer-term context:
    • The modern short pulse of beneficial Global warming stopped 20 years ago and recent global temperatures are now stable or declining.
    • According to reliable Ice Core records the last millennium 1000 – 2000 AD was the coldest of our current Holocene interglacial and the world had already been cooling quite rapidly for the last 3000 years, in fact since ~1000 BC.
    • At 11,000 years old, our Holocene interglacial, responsible for all man-kind’s advances, from caves to microprocessors, is coming its end.
    • The weather gets worse in colder times.
    • The world will very soon, (on a geological time scale), revert to a true glaciation, again resulting in mile high ice sheets over New York.

The prospect of even moving in a cooling direction is something to be truly scared about, both for the biosphere and for man-kind.

Spending any effort, let alone GDP scale costs, trying to stop something that has not been happening for 3 millennia seems truly stupid.
