UHI May Account For Half Of Climate Warming In China

Whether the urban heat island effect is in fact warming ‘the climate’ is debatable, but in a propaganda war it can be made to seem so. In any case this needs as wide a coverage as possible, to offset at least some of the alarmist spin about supposed man-made warming that’s pushed down everyone’s throat on a daily basis.

By Paul Homewood

A new study by Nicola Scafetta shows that a considerable percentage of China’s global warming from 1940 to today is due to the phenomenon of urbanization. However, the models mistakenly associated this same warming to anthropogenic forcing:

Near-surface temperature records show that China warmed by about 0.8 °C from 1950 to 2010. However, there exists an ongoing debate about whether this warming might have been partially due to urbanization bias. In fact, homogenization approaches may be inefficient in densely populated provinces that have experienced a significant urban development since the 1940s. This paper aims to complement previous research on the topic by showing that an alternative approach based on the analysis of the divergence between the minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) near-surface temperature records since the 1940s could be useful to clarify the issue because urban heat island (UHI) effects stress the warming of nocturnal temperatures…

“Whether the urban heat island effect is in fact warming ‘the climate’ is debatable, ..”
Whether UHI effect is affecting land temperature readings is debatable, but it’s not actually affecting global average temperature which about 15 C.

The global average temperature of 15 C is mostly ocean surface temperature which has average global ocean temperature of about 17 C. And of course it is 70% of the surface of Earth.
Global average land temperature is about 10 C and being the remaining 30% of the global surface.

The average land temperature is rising much faster than average ocean temperature.
Whether UHI effect is affecting the measured average land temperature is debatable- and I assume it has some effect upon the measurement. But changes in land temperatures have little effect upon global average temperature.

But if people are worried about high temperatures and since most peope are living in and around urban areas- UHI effects are causing an increase temperatures in these urban area.
Global warming is not having any effect, in terms of causing high temperatures.
Or warmer global temperature is increasing the average temperature of 70% of the planet which is the ocean, and ocean surface never get very hot.

Hot days is weather and in urban areas it can be made warmer from the UHI effects.

If we all throw our computers out of the window we can think more clearly.

Thermodynamic Law dictates that ALL energy use results in the generation of waste heat which TENDS to warm the planet.
On the other side of the equation, if we are looking for a balance we have the scientific behaviour of water which reacts against an increase in temperature from whatever cause, and thus TENDS to cool the planet.
The science also tells us that the resulting equilibrium temperature is primarily determined by gravity.
In practical terms nature hunts about this equilibrium as these two TENDENCIES vie with each other with leads and lags.

It is remarkable that the Earth’s temperature has been so historically stable varying by little more than +/- 1.5% over the years. (Kelvin base).
Unfortunately for we humans most of the time the temperature is below what we would like with occasional spikes during the interglacial periods, as of now.

IMO this is due to water, whilst being good at controlling temperature increase is useless when it gets cold and tends to exacerbate the problem.

some 40+% of all surface reported temperatures ARE FAKE.

They are made up BS. Amazingly most of those are in the boonies where it is pretty much always cooler than the urban areas (UHIE). The cheaters then use these warmer urban temperatures from measuring devices placed in asphalt parking lots, airport areas where jet engines are continuously running nearby, etc., etc., to ‘estimate’ the missing temperatures.

NOAA has an August info release on ‘water vapor’ (US spelling) already on one of its websites. I’ll put it up as a post.
