Green suicide: Climate hysteria is killing German car industry

Let’s see what slice of the German car market goes to electric cars in the next few years. If most people don’t want them due to cost, range, battery life or whatever, where would that leave the manufacturers – and the politicians, with their beloved so-called ‘climate protection’ policies and arbitrary ’emissions’ targets? In trouble, surely.

Frankfurt’s biennial International Auto Show (IAA) opens its doors to the public Thursday, but major foreign carmakers are staying away while climate demonstrators march outside — forming a microcosm of the industry’s woes, says AFP.

“There have never been so many cancellations by carmakers,” said Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer of the Centre for Automotive Research (CAR).

“The IAA is turning into a trade fair packed with problems,” he added, in the image of the German manufacturers who host it.

Giants like Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen are seeing their engineering advantage and profit margins eroded — even as the global economic outlook darkens.

The potential blow of US tariffs on European auto imports hangs over many carmakers, who have already suffered from an escalating Washington-Beijing trade confrontation due to their American factories.

Meanwhile three of the world’s four largest carmakers will stay away from the IAA this year: the French-Japanese Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, Japan’s Toyota and US-based General Motors (GM).

Other heavyweights like Italian-American Fiat-Chrysler and France’s PSA have also absented themselves, as well as some of the best-known luxury brands.

The remaining manufacturers huddled in Frankfurt’s massive trade fair complex have one major priority: stoking enthusiasm for new electric models set for release this year, as new EU carbon emissions limits enter into force from 2020.

Will the EU still exist in 2020?
Will the German car industry just lie down and die in 2020?

Not with its current membership 😎

The destruction of the German car industry is only a part of the overall self destruction Germans are carrying out.

  5. spetzer86 says:

All the EU has to do is mandate the purchase of EVs and call for the ban of ICE. Set a date and off you go. Oh, wait, they’re already doing that:

This has to work out better than the diesel concept did, right?

  6. Phoenix44 says:

And so nobody buys a new car because they don’t know what the rules will be and what resale values will be. But nobody buys an EV because they are expensive, rubbish and there’s no infrastructure for them.

I wouldn’t dream of buying new car now.

Does any of this get through to climate-obsessed politicians? Not the ones in power it seems…

German drivers still love their gas guzzlers and not many of them are thinking about going electric any time soon.

Renewables Threaten German Economy & Energy Supply, McKinsey Warns In New Report
    – Michael Shellenberger

A new report by consulting giant McKinsey finds that Germany’s Energiewende, or energy transition to renewables, poses a significant threat to the nation’s economy and energy supply.

One of Germany’s largest newspapers, Die Welt, summarized the findings of the McKinsey report in a single word: “disastrous.”
    . . .
Among the radical changes required include building transmission lines eight times faster than they are currently being built, building new back-up power plants, and installing instruments to control electricity demand, all of which would drive electricity prices even higher.

Protests against German car industry rev up in Frankfurt

There are already calls to ban gas-guzzling SUVs from German city centres after four pedestrians, including a three-year-old boy, were killed this month when one mounted the pavement in Berlin.

“Such tank-like cars do not belong in cities,” tweeted Stephan von Dassel, a Greens politician and mayor of Berlin’s Mitte district, where the fatal accident happened.

“They are ‘climate killers’, even without accidents—every driving error becomes a life-threatening danger for innocent (pedestrians).”

Climate and safety are unrelated but it’s open season on cars in Germany.
