At least carbon dioxide can take comfort from its popularity in real greenhouses, as opposed to alarm-filled imaginary ones.

It is a phenomenon of modern life that as membership in the old established religions wane, cults continue to sprout up like toadstools. Most of them have a very limited number of adherents and unless 75 people are killed at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, or 900 are killed or commit suicide at Jonestown, Guyana, we dont hear about cult leaders like David Koresh or Jim Jones.

Occasionally, a smaller cult manages to make the news when they commit mass suicide in order to board a spaceship that will take them to Cloud Cuckooland.

But when it comes to sheer numbers and influence, theres nothing to match the doomsday cult that has sprung up in the wake of Al Gores warning us about the imminent threat of global extinction. What makes the longevity of…

Thankfully someone else has noticed the rapid increase in True Believers, or should I say the transitioning of the existing True Believers out of the old cults into newer ones, as Eric Hoffer detailed concerning Communism and National Socialism in his 1950s book, The True Believer. Christianity developed apocalypse mania that has refused to die, as the more obstinate hold onto the corrupted old Jewish belief in the restoration of their Nation in a future Zion, as detailed by Martin Larson in his The Story of Christian Origins. Reminds of Michael Crichton’s comment:

Michael Crichton: “Sit down at a dinner party, and you say: The world is coming to an end—we have the most horrible things [imminent], and you immediately get the aroused attention at the table. Alternatively, you say, you know what? Basically everything’s good. The world’s getting better.

    Charlie: Nobody cares?

Michael: No! They get angry, or they turn away. It’s not what we want to hear. We want to hear disaster.”
    Michael Crichton–Charlie Rose interview 2007

How many writers have made their living supplying disaster stories for the pulp audience?

Here we go again, media lapping it up…

So far at least 135 arrests have been made in London, as groups shut down roads around Parliament and Whitehall with vehicles and bikes. Banners reading “tell the truth” and “no coal mines, no fracking” were brandished by protesters.

The ER twits wouldn’t know the truth if it hit them over the head with a 2×4. All they are proving is that the lot of them should serve a 12 month stint in Broadmoor.

Bye bye Gaia cult, Hello Greta

JB’s comment above is interesting. It is however only one side of reality.

I remember a poignant piece from an old film supposedly a story on the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. A family has to leave their home in a hurry; husband in car with kids waiting for wife. She is inside insisting on doing the beds and tidying up before they leave the place forever. There are also those who hang on tightly to the false security of the status quo.

Camping in Whitehall or wherever and getting on the TV news is just a sport for these types…until they get arrested.

fad cults. Pyramid power, magic stones, save the whales, the ozone hole, etc., and now CAGW aka climate catastrophe (in the latest version). These posturing morons are merely the sheeple that have ever been with us. What has changed is the communications networks around the planet which enable hucksters and charlatans to stir up a mob of easily fooled idiots and set them against the rest of us.

  9. JB says:

@oldmanK Indeed. A certain woman of fabled renown comes to mind, though the common story has been corrupted. She dared to look longingly at Sodom, with its pasture, called Gomorrah during the asteroidal bombardment and rain of pitch.

Virtually every Hollywood disaster movie these days has one of these characters who just can’t leave until the earth opens up before them. Disaster is mesmerizing. Poor Mesmer. He’s almost as infamous as Will….

@JB Yes. She was one with a reputation -of sorts- ; though I always thought her of as mule-headed; certainly in the eyes of the Lord. More like the one who sits at the combative end of the board-room table. But then every management team gets to have one. The critical thing is how to handle it.
