Sorry Ryanair, there’s no such thing as a green airline

More promotion of the mythical virtues of a ‘low-carbon’ lifestyle, which is somehow supposed to be ‘environmentally friendly’. Of course in the real world the natural environment depends on carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, but who wants to hear that in these days of climate fearmongering?

The Irish airline has released a series of adverts flaunting its green credentials, but it’s still the EU’s tenth-biggest polluter.

The solution? Reducing demand, suggests Wired.

Of the European Union’s ten biggest carbon dioxide (CO2) emitters, nine of them are coal-fired power plants. The tenth is Ryanair, the low-cost Irish airline which released 9.9 megatonnes of greenhouse gases in 2018 – a 6.9 per cent increase from 2017.

But Ryanair has its own spin on the data that contradicts the EU Transport & Environment group’s report. According to a series of TV, print and radio adverts promoting the airline, Ryanair should be the airline of choice for carbon-conscious flyers.

CO2 is not pollution

“Everybody knows that when you fly Ryanair you enjoy the lowest fares. But do you know you are travelling on the airline with Europe’s lowest emissions as well?” reads one advert, part of a series that has attracted more than 100 complaints to the UK advertising regulator, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

The ASA is currently assessing whether to open an investigation into the adverts.

Ryanair isn’t the only airline flexing its environmental credentials. On October 10, British Airways announced it would offset carbon emissions for all domestic flights starting in 2020, a first step towards its eventual goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

EasyJet, too, says it’s reducing per passenger carbon emissions by investing in lighter seats and decreasing fuel consumption with better planes and engines.

But is there really such a thing as an environmentally-friendly airline, or is Ryanair just the latest to partake in a little self-indulgent greenwashing?

It all comes down to whether the airline industry can innovate its way out of climbing emissions, or if passengers will just have to accept that the only low-carbon flight is no flight at all.

!! “Sorry Ryanair, there’s no such thing as a green airline” – so, emm, zuh, ‘who’s side are you oon?’ What is “being green”, mean exactly? I live a “green ” existence but am not – definitely NOT a ‘tree-hugger! I enjoy my meat regularly with veg, I drive ECONOMICAL Vehicles and repair rather than throw away “stuff” andwould fly more if I could – time and proximity to airports being more of the problem, etc etc…..

The ‘green’ stupidity continues because no one has learned any real science in the last 20+ years. Those that don’t know what real science is are so easily fooled by the pseudo science of the UN Church of Climatology and don’t realise it is just a scam pushed by the Marxist UN on the way to a one world Marxist government.

I don’t think we should blame Ryanair, or any other airline for climbing aboard the latest fad advertising, they are just trying to boost their bottom line. We should be leaning on governments for pushing this ‘green’ stupidity.

  3. Phoenix44 says:

Let’s face it, the middle class Green warriors hate the low cost airlines for ruining their holidays and places abroad. The whole Green scam drips with snobbery and repulsion at the way the lower orders have been allowed to fly cheaply. Cheap flying will be target and if the Greens have their way, we will get one flight a year. The fact that that will then be so ludicrously expensive that the lower classes wont be able to fly will suit the Greens.

Yes Ivan, for years we are fed that there aren’t enough ‘Engineers’ – what truth Weren’t we TOLD – ie that too many were being funded in the ‘Rts n’Farts – whhich conveniently also missed the point about , as you say, not enough in the Real sciences.. For my part and experience, it has been a case of ‘Bums on seats’ in Higher / Further education to keep young off the ‘dole’ and any political action was good enough regardless of the outcome. Blind leading the Blind followed by gravy-following legaleese to support them. It’s like going back to Medieval times – how long will it take for a Society to recover it’s knowledge and to be swamped by another Country’s developed society.. Yes Extinction indeed – to be another 3rd World, nay 4th World order state.
The TIME will COME when someone will re-discover the simplicity of a Steam or diesel engine without electronics that will run forever so long as it is lubricated and cooled whilst supplied with fuel. Look what that did for our Country.

There’s sustainability which is fine within reason, then there’s the CO2 nonsense which isn’t.

The mass of the atmosphere is the major factor, not its composition, so changes to about 0.01% of it are marginal at best for temperatures but make a difference for plants, trees, etc.

Why should Ryan Air be singled out and denied access to the carbon credits market?

Thus ensuring prices will rise, effectively making BA flights unaffordable to the less well off. I wonder what Sir Freddie Laker would have done?

My carbon footprint is zero. (Except I draw with a pencil). Carbon Dioxide? Oh, that’s different!

Good idea to find another stick to bash Michael O’Leary with.
This has been a BBC inspired tactic since he revolutionized air travel for the little people (I don’t mean just leprechauns) many years ago.
Yes, this is an age old tactic to satirize anything Irish.
But then the head Honcho of (once) British Airways, Willie Walsh, is a fellow Paddie, which allows the mention of them in the article – despite their Spanish connections.
But be that as it may, the article is right on the ball pointing out the hypocrisy of any airline pretending to be “carbon(dioxide) neutral”
And I for one intend to contact O’Leary and tell him he is numpty.

    Insane times.
    Which came first?
A lack of sanity in general, or the obsession over CO2 in particular?

  11. oldbrew says:

The joke of course is that all this airline fake virtue signalling is designed to attract more business and so burn more fuel.

EXTINCTION REBELLION FOUNDER BLASTED FOR ‘BLIND HYPOCRISY’ AFTER 11,000-MILE FLIGHT FOR LUXURY HOLIDAY

    Date: 13/10/19 The Sun

A Founder of the Extinction Rebellion eco-protests was accused of “blind hypocrisy” last night as it was revealed she jetted to a luxury break in Central America despite leading calls for a “rapid reduction” in air travel.
    . . .
She revealed that her holiday of self-discovery included taking hallucinogenic drugs that inspired her calling “to get with the spirit of the otter”.

“…….of self-discovery included taking hallucinogenic drugs that inspired her calling ‘to get with the spirit of…….’ ……” Seems like our (some at least by their own admission) fall in to this category. WHY,,WHY -I repeat WHY, do we LISTEN to ALL these idiots? Maybe Shakespeare and other ‘inspired’ “Great writers & Philosophers” were also on hallucinogens, whether or not of their own voluntare. Seems like we as a society are predestined to accept their utterances above the reason of science. HOW DARE THEY inflict mental torture on us under the auspices of conscience etc in the name of ……
Time we gave these wackos a whacking and let us get on with living decently

“Roger Ryanair 101, be advised poor visibility here, radar off-line due to extreme alarmist clutter.”

“OK Ryanair got you on visual, your bright virtue signalling lights are on, cutting through the MSM fog.”

    “Clear to land” …
