Political suicide note: UK Government considers banning gas heating & cooking

The UK government seems to have a bad case of climate derangement syndrome at the moment, in the run-up to the COP26 conference in Glasgow this year. How much economic damage could its futile attempts to reduce the supply of essential carbon dioxide (CO2) to the Earth’s ecosystems do?

Homeowners could be forced to replace their gas boilers to ensure the UK meets its target to be carbon neutral by 2050, ministers are warning.

The Government will publish a White Paper later this year which will set out the “bigger decisions” that the UK has to make to meet the target, says the Sunday Telegraph.

Lord Duncan of Springbank, the Climate Change minister, said that the White Paper will consider whether the Government should ban gas central heating altogether from all homes.

It is not clear if homeowners will have to pay for this new strategy – which is planned to be introduced incrementally over the next decade – and whether there are enough plumbers to carry out the work.

It comes after Ofgem, the gas regulator, said last week that Britain will have to change “the way homes and businesses are heated” to ensure the UK can hit its target.

The Government will set out the radical plans in the months leading up to the COP 26 environmental summit in Glasgow later this year.

Last June the UK became the first major economy in the world to pass laws to end its contribution to global warming by 2050.

Lord Duncan said that to hit this target the Government was now looking at a new “domestic decarbonisation approach” to hit the target.

He said “There will be an overarching energy White Paper that will look at the bigger decisions that we have to take. Decarbonising domestic heating will be a real challenge. Shall we electrify the entire grid?

“If we do so, bearing in mind that electricity tends to be more expensive, we need to address fuel poverty head on if that is the case. Or are we looking at putting hydrogen into the grid in a hybrid or pure form?

“We will resolve that question this year. We will make a decision to determine that and to support the way forward.”

He added: “We will need to do so in tandem with fuel poverty; again, there is no point in decarbonising while making people cold and sick. We need to make sure we go hand-in-hand with that just transition for all the people.”

The news comes after hybrid car owners were given a “kick in the face” by ministers, motoring bodies have said, as they warned that the surprise decision to ban the vehicles from sale in 2035 will “backfire”.

‘there is no point in decarbonising while making people cold and sick’

You can’t worry about the cold and sick while saving a planet. Priorities, man!!!

Lord Duncan seems unaware of the program. And the threat is to EVERYONE. Protecting the edges only delays that recognition.

  2. A C Osborn says:

It doesn’t make sense, whether using CO2, Cash or any other metric.
It is just a giant waste of Tax payers cash and very dangerous to boot.

  3. tallbloke says:

When the Labour govt brought in the Climate Change Act in 2008 I saw the writing on the wall. This Tory party policy is just the continuation of the UN agenda. I’ve fought for 8 years to get the UK out of the EU. Now we’ll have to fight to get the UK out of the UN. This is trickier, because all the main parties are submitting, UKIP is busted, and the Brexit Party seems to have quit the field (for now anyway).

  4. oldbrew says:

If or when they try to turn their rhetoric into reality, it will surely all fall apart either due to public resistance or to the impossibility of the targets, or a combination of the two.

Ross McKitrick: Fight climate extremists before they upend society

Last year was the year the climate issue took a sharp turn towards extremism. Let’s hope 2020 is the year sanity makes a comeback.
    . . .
Climate and energy policy has fallen into the hands of a worldwide movement that openly declares its extremism. The would-be moderates on this issue have pretended for 20 years they could keep the status quo without having to fight for it. Those days are over.

Glasgow announces net zero roadmap to decarbonise the city
    Friday 7 February 2020

The city expects to spend millions on enabling EV adoption, installing heatpumps and modernising its network in order to become the UK’s first Net Zero city

    EV chargers: £298 million
Electric heat pumps for homes: £1.4 billion
    City energy network: £648 million

    Who pays?

  6. Gamecock says:

“electric heat pumps in order to decarbonise their heat supply”

    What is a ‘heat supply?’

From where will Glasgow get electricity to operate this dream? Cut production, increase demand. Genius!

    Fantasy has become reality!

“For it’s the land unknown to man
    Where fantasy is fact”

“How happy life could be if all of mankind
Would take the time to journey to the center of the mind” – Amboy Dukes, 1968

  7. alienmoped says:

We need to get the Reform Party going.
Once again the Conservatives prove they cannot be trusted.
This will create levels of poverty we haven’t seen for over a century.
    It’s pure evil.
The Conservatives have become very smug, they forget their majority is due to Brexit Party and Labour party voters rejecting far Leftists and Globalists, those votes were “lent”, not given, this will be their last term in office, ever.

  8. dscott8186 says:

Replace gas furnaces with electric powered heat pumps??? The incompetence of the bureaucrat never ceases to amaze… Only an incompetent would trade a high efficiency heat conversion process for a lower one! Gas furnaces achieve on average greater than 90% efficiency in energy conversion from fuel to heat. Electric heat pumps, the operative term being electric, at best power generation achieves a 66% efficiency conversion from fuel to electricity and then the losses of power transmission to finally the actual efficiency of the heat pump itself at prevailing ambient temperatures. IF you have a mild winter, you may be on par with a gas furnace IF you bother to take into account all the losses of electric generation and transmission.

The efficiency drops steadily from air temperatures below 32F. Oh, by the way, once the air temperature drops to 20F, its straight resistance heat…grossly inefficient.

  9. stpaulchuck says:

I’m going to lay in extra popcorn and Valu-Rite vodka. This is going to get interesting when temperatures drop below usable for heat pumps and the people start freezing as they turn on the electric heaters and find none work because the sun didn’t shine for a week and the batteries are dead and all the gas, coal, and oil power plants were decommissioned. You voted for it. Enjoy!

This is what can happen if you point out the problems with so-called climate policies…

Date: 09/02/20 Roger Pielke Jr., Forbes

Several Skeptical Science team members have contacted me by email in the past hours with vaguely sinister but eminently deniable threats. I expect they will come after this column next. And if you hear that I have left academia, like Judith Curry, you’ll know why.

The BBC explains it all here [cough]: ‘The road to net zero: how we could become carbon neutral’

It won’t be easy, but clean energy analyst Chris Goodall believes that the UK is entirely capable of becoming carbon neutral.

20 times more wind power, and hydrogen. Simples 🙄

  12. Gamecock says:

Carbon neutral is easy: drive out 99% of the population.

Climate Crisis Solved By New Jet That Runs On Liberal Hypocrisy
    February 10th, 2020

U.S.—The climate crisis has been getting worse, despite liberal elites’ best efforts to fly all over the country in their private jets lecturing everybody about it.

There seemed to be no end in sight until a new tech startup, Hypocri-Fuel, introduced a private jet that runs on liberal hypocrisy.

“We just hook this bad boy up to Leo DiCaprio, Al Gore, Justin Trudeau, or any other of the thousands of progressive elites who refuse to change their lifestyles to match their beliefs, and presto — plenty of fuel to go around,” said the startup’s CEO, Gus Perder. “One fuel-up can power a jet for over a year.”

This sounds like madness, when industry spews out so much in the way of pollutants.
