Climate alarmists yet again strain credulity to the limit, no doubt hoping to stir up guilt in the populace about energy use.

Heat-related deaths have been “substantially underreported” on Australia’s national records, according to experts from The Australian National University (ANU).

Researchers say the amount of deaths attributed to excessive natural heat is at least 50 times more than recorded on death certificates.

Published in The Lancet Planetary Health, figures show over the past 11 years 340 deaths in Australia were recorded as being due to excessive heat but statistical analysis found 36,765 deaths could have been attributed to heat.

“Climate change is a killer, but we don’t acknowledge it on death certificates,” co-author Dr Arnagretta Hunter, from the ANU Medical School, said.

“There is second component on a death certificate which allows for pre-existing conditions and other factors.

“If you have an asthma attack and die during heavy smoke exposure from bushfires, the death certificate should include that information.

“We can make a diagnosis of disease like coronavirus, but we are less literate in environmental determinants like hot weather or bushfire smoke.”

The new analysis suggests Australia’s national heat-related mortality rate is around two per cent.

“Climate change is the single greatest health threat that we face globally even after we recover from coronavirus,” Dr Hunter said.

Australia must have a lot of health threats if the ‘single greatest’ one accounts for just 2% of the mortality rate.

Well keep Dr Arnagretta Hunter away from your heart. She can’t distinguish between a virus, a disease, and a diagnosis. In her hospital, SHE is the greatest threat to the ill. As for climate threat, I imagine the indigenous natives in Australia can tell us more about that than all the professional climatologists put together.

If you look at the unconverted temp records you will find that it has been a lot hotter in the past, no matter what BOM produces, and people weren’t dropping like flies.

What Dr Hunter should have said is ‘relying on unreliable wind power makes using air-conditioning too expensive for most people even if they can get the power’.

If extreme high temperatures are such a common cause of death then true medical professionals will know it is one of the easiest to prevent. Stay out of the sun, frequent showers and consume plenty of fluids.
But if folks are dying in Australia due to a rise of a few tenths of a degree over decades, surely a large proportion of immigrants from the UK must have died within weeks of landing. Also, in the UK, the cancellation of package holidays this year will save thousands of lives.

  5. Curious George says:

From her biography: “For me some of the solutions in medicine come from improving the structures and systems that are used, and I enjoy being part of that process.”
Let’s start with improving the climate! Bravo!

“If you have an asthma attack and die during heavy smoke exposure from bushfires, the death certificate should include that information.

And counter-wise if people have asthma and catch pneumonia (which happens often with asthmatics) and die during a particularly cold period of weather, the death certificate should include that information.

People dying from inadequate heating through the winter months, their death certificates should include that information?
In Australia shouldn’t all weather related deaths, regardless of how tenuous the link, be included on the death certificate — if not what should be left out?

  7. stpaulchuck says:

and how is today’s Aussie climate exceedingly different than in the last couple hundred years?? Is the high temperature significantly higher? I seriously doubt it. If they do this it’ll constitute medical fraud IMAO.

  8. oldbrew says:

Building homes in or near fire-prone forestry is not a climate problem.

  9. Peter Norman says:

In 2018 Telegraph said the big freeze could cause 2000 deaths. I guess with the virus and this coming winter freeze we’ll have headlines “Climate Change could cause 30,000 deaths in the UK”.
This is an emergency! We need to act now to cool the planet!
Suggest Australia send the poor woman on a sabbatical to the UK. There’s always room in the UK for another expert in crisis management.

“The pivot from Covid to climate is starting.”

All deaths were caused by Covid. Now, all deaths can be caused by climate change.

These people disrespect science. Knowledge of the causes of death is valuable. They will throw it all away to meet their current political desires.
