EU seeks to wipe out ‘planet-warming refrigerants’, but smugglers cash in

Another outbreak of trace gas climate paranoia, with vehicle air conditioning in the firing line this time. But attempts to choke off supplies of supposedly offending refrigerants have created a market for smugglers bringing cheap HFCs from China.

The EU’s legislation on fluorinated gases, adopted in 2014, needs an overhaul “to increase ambition in line with the European Green Deal” and “better prevent” an ongoing surge of illegal imports coming from China, an EU official told EURACTIV.

Demand for F-gases, a family of chemicals used as a refrigerant, has increased steadily since they were introduced in the early 1990s to replace the ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).

But F-gases are also among the most potent greenhouse gases [Talkshop comment: assertion with no supporting evidence, as usual] and are now also being phased out as a result.

Emissions of F-gases soared about 70% between 1990 and 2014, and peaked globally in 2015. They currently amount to 2.5% of total EU greenhouse gas emissions, according to the European Environment Agency.

Their impact on the earth’s climate is considerable. Fluorinated gases have a global warming potential (GWP) up to 23,000 times greater than carbon dioxide. Moreover, they can linger in the atmosphere up to 270 years in the case of HFCs, while sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and perfluorocarbons (PFCs) can stay for millennia.

The culprits are well identified. F-gases are used mainly as coolants in air conditioning and in domestic, supermarket and industrial refrigeration, which altogether represent an outstanding 90% of total emissions.

Potential leakages in all these areas spring from production plants and the manipulation of pre-charged equipment.

A global affair

Worldwide, demand for HFCs is on the rise due to the mass adoption of Western lifestyles, which rely heavily on food preservation and air-conditioning in cars and buildings.

The impact of F-gases is global since they blend with other gases in the atmosphere.

    If refrigeration units are emitting CFC, then its leaking, will overheat and shut down. Owners usually catch this condition before it gets worse. Methods are already in place to recover CFC when a unit needs maintenance.

    In the 1990’s Paul Sheridan published his findings on CFCs in SEMA news (CFCs: STILL A HOT ISSUE). He was president, [of] Doctor Detroit Motorsports, was also product planning manager for Chrysler’s 1996 minivan.

Recognizing that they themselves will not be routinely exposed to this unproven chemical, what criteria did the EPA use to pronounce from their ivory towers that R- 134a was “acceptable”?

    Aye, @JB, I could add a lot more: BUT we have the ludicrous” situation of AirCon in our cars, etc. few have ANY idea of what it exactly is or how to use it – so do we really need it? Fine when it works, Pain when it doesn’t as we can’t open 1/4 light windows etc for fresh air ( COLD). Butt TO THE POINT: how many cars have leaking sysems thru poor servicing techniques, bad maintenance and corrosion of pipes, ……… and then there are the ACCIDENTS and stones thru’ rads, etc. and all for such a small % of the gas in the atmosphere …….

    this is just tyranny for tyranny’s sake.

    The whole world seems to have gone nuts with little groups of wannabe tyrants out to force us to do or not do something because they say so. They find some idiot idea, fake up evidence to support it by way of phony “studies” then beat us over the head with this “evidence” while getting pols to write laws taking away our rights to a peaceful and comfortable life.

    Well at least there is an alternative cooling method called Thermal Electric Cooling using the Peltier effect. These units at reasonable prices can be obtained retail in the US for dorm refrigerators and soda coolers. Maybe an opportunity here for vehicles and other larger scale applications?

    It’s an interesting technology, however, I don’t know about the efficiency and longevity of these units. Might be a good stock investment, given the lunacy of the greens. Anyone know about the efficacy of thermal electric cooling???

    Sorry Descott, I don’t know the answer to your question regarding efficiency but I do know that my portable cooler works better with a high capacity fan replacing the original small one – on a cool day I can just get it to freeze items if I don’t overload it.
