Plug-in hybrids are “fake electrics cars”, say researchers

We already knew the subsidies for these types of vehicle were a waste of money, but this makes it look even worse. Another case of climate ideology derailing sanity.

New testing commissioned by clean transport group Transport & Environment (T&E) shows that plug-in hybrids (PHEV) emit considerably more CO2 than advertised, and the problem could be even worse as drivers charge up before entering low emissions zones, says The Driven.

The results of testing has led the influential European NGO to label plug-in hybrids as “fake electric cars” designed solely by car makers to pass lab tests and achieve more sales via tax breaks.

The Emissions Analytics research, which included PHEV versions of the BMW X5, Volvo XC60 and Mitsubishi Outlander, found that even when driving on a full battery, emissions were 28-89% higher than advertised by the car makers.

Once the battery is empty, T&E estimates the engines in these vehicles quickly overshoot the stated emissions after 11-23km of driving, resulting in as much as eight times the official emissions ratings determined in WLTP tests.

And the problem becomes worse in cities such as London and Madrid, which have low emissions zones where plug-in electric vehicles are only allowed to drive on electric power.

T&E says that when put in “battery charging mode” to top up a battery before entering these zones, emissions can be up to 12 times that of official numbers.

The tax incentives T&E is referring to include up to a €6,750 grant towards the purchase of new PHEVs in Germany, and a €2,000 incentive in France.

What the world gets when politicians mandate unattainable ideals from engineers. They, the engineers, have no choice but to split the hairs of physics in the direction of idiotic demands.

  2. Chaswarnertoo says:

Oh, how surprising. We have about 10 years worth of lithium and cobalt and only 100 years of oil left….

  3. Gamecock says:

’emit considerably more CO2 than advertised’

‘Considerably more’ can’t compete with infinite. EVs advertise ZERO emissions.

“To end sales of new fossil fuel cars and vans, the government needs to introduce a target for all carmakers to sell an increasing share of zero-emissions vehicles each year, with penalties if they fail to comply, T&E said.”

T&E suffers no penalty for the fraud of zero-emissions vehicles? Powered by green unicorn pee?

    Low emissions 😂

the problem becomes worse in cities such as London and Madrid

Battery-only (stealth) mode won’t last long with the air con turned on in sweltering Madrid.

Oh never mind! we’re all going on Bozo’s Public transport – except when we musn’t because of social distancing and it is not economically viable to run public transport. ( especially in rural areas – largest part of UK). Shows just how disconnected the green blob and fillies are.. Well of course they’re floating in the green swamp.

Update THURSDAY: has the MSM made a big thing of the LACK of power from Wind/ Solar this morning? Frosty cold and electric car no-go-veryfar 40Gb demand = 2% supply from Solawind

Gas 60%, wind 1.04% right now. EV owners take note, you’re charging 60% with gas today 😆

  8. Phil Salmon says:

All/electric cars for all of Britain by 2030 means all global annual production of cobalt and one or two other metals consumed by Britain alone.

That’s not going to happen so the reality is simple: no fuel in cars means no cars except for an elite. Private vehicle rationing is on the way.

  9. saighdear says:

Electric car charging ….Costs TWICE AS MUCH as my domestic rate – so far as I was aware, the Sturgeon Supply Elect. company was giving FREE Power to charge the cars – didn’t last long, did it? Tariff Rate is: £0.30 Per kW with a minimum charge of £1.50.I think my diesl and pettrol cars are cheaper to run now too.
