World feigns climate concern as most nations ignore Paris Agreement

‘Cutting emissions’ means economic self-harm and loss of secure electricity supplies. This morning the UK is importing over 14% of its power, and its extensive wind turbine fleet is producing a pitiful 2.4% of the total supply. Gas is saving the day, but nobody wants to build new gas plants any more due to the ‘challenging economics’.

A UN climate summit to be held in Glasgow in November will fail unless more countries follow Britain’s lead and make far more ambitious plans to cut emissions, the United Nations has said.

Only two of the world’s 18 largest greenhouse gas emitters — the UK and the European Union — — the UK and the European Union — have so far submitted plans for the COP26 summit that lay out extensive commitments and policies to reduce emissions, says The Times (via The GWPF).

Other big emitters are either yet to submit updated strategies or have drafted plans that are too weak to achieve the 2015 Paris climate target of limiting global temperature rise to less than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

“This report shows that current levels of climate ambition are very far from putting us on a pathway that will meet our Paris agreement goals,” Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of the UN climate change body, said.

“While we acknowledge the recent political shift in momentum towards stronger climate action, decisions to accelerate and broaden climate action everywhere must be taken now.”

Alok Sharma, the COP26 president and former business secretary, said: “This report should serve as an urgent call to action. We must recognise that the window for action to safeguard our planet is closing fast.”

  1. I agree that the Paris Accord will be driving Europe as though we are just plain stupid. The reason is simple carbon dioxide is not the driver of global climate – it is water vapor and driven by the Sun.

Switching over to nuclear power, e.g modular factory built units, is the right road ahead, although in the meantime lets keep the clean coal power generation running, but forgetting the dirty fires.

Emissions from unclean generation is a definit health hazard.

Was the UK’s plan submission to COP26 written by Ms, Symonds?

This is the twenty-sixth COP!!!! What chance of it being more of a success than the others? Portentous statements of intent again, no action except from the suicidal. I don’t think I’m voting Tory any more.

    Plagiarizing the 1990s.

Cirrusly, this message is becoming one of Aesop’s Fables.

Brown: ’50 days to save world’

Gordon Brown has warned the UK faces a “catastrophe” of floods, droughts and killer heatwaves if world leaders fail to agree a deal on climate change.

He addressed the Major Economies Forum in London…

India and China are building dozens of coal fired plants such that even if the UK and western Europe stopped ALL generation it would not put a scratch on the amount of CO2 they will create.

  8. Paul Vaughan says:

stpaulchuck figures how much CO2 “saved” if say LA, SF, NYC, London, & DC go off-grid. Maybe India & China have proposed a combination of their own cities to join a CO2 trade. With no doubt equitable decisions centralized, each powerful nation sells trade (only after math) at home. No doubt censorship less UN is simply agree (or not) weather IT’s point (less 2) respond. Miss story? Yes, hid un readers in hole “fact chuck ind-us try” depending on ______ and may be DT can fill in a few blanks before otherwise mined.

    May peace be with you.
