Climate change: UK Government’s own advisers say it’s failing to deliver change fast enough – just as they always say

Climate-1Unpopular policies are hard to implement, as any politician knows. Having no convincing evidence that trace gases in the atmosphere are a major, or even any, kind of climate issue doesn’t help persuade the public of a need for drastic measures and financial pain either.

The government is failing to deliver on promises to dramatically cut the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to its own climate advisers, says Sky News.

They warn ministers need to rapidly step up action, with every month of delay making it harder to meet legal obligations to reach net zero by 2050.

In a series of report cards on the government’s progress over the last year, the Climate Change Committee says that despite setting the right targets there’s still no detailed plan on how to replace millions of boilers, encourage people to drive electric and plant acres of trees.

Chris Stark, the committee’s chief executive, told Sky News there’s a gulf between the ambition and a willingness to take tough decisions that affect people’s lives.

“It is true the ambition of the country has changed in the last 12 months and that is useful.

“But unless it is being physically delivered, so the things that will drive us towards net zero, the changes we will see in homes, industry and transport, we can’t say we are credibly on track.

“The government has to change course.”

The climate advisers make 200 recommendations to the government.

They include judging all its policies against a “net-zero” test to ensure they are compatible with climate targets, and amending the Planning Bill to make sure new houses are low carbon and are adapted for rising global temperatures.

The advisers also say the government can’t shy away from encouraging people to fly less and eat less meat.

Sit in queues expelling fumes, that’ll do it!

  2. Coeur de Lion says:

Why isn’t the Climate Change Committee required to face up on a podium to explain their recommendations for dealing with the Climate Crisis as we had for the COVID Crisis? Any punter on this thread could find simple questions that would crash the whole lunatic enterprise. Come on, everyone, campaign for it.

  3. pameladragon says:

What puzzles me about all this gnashing of teeth and wailing about emissions is that who really cares if they fail to meet their goals? This is the most likely conclusion to all this foolish railing against CO2 and when it eventually happens that none of these countries achieve NetZero (whatever that means), how will they be punished and by whom?

Cos Sky News turns a threat into a promise.

These “think tanks” are using tax payer money to overturn democracy and to deny science. The risible lies these “think tanks” make claiming there is some sort of “crisis” that justifies destroying the excellent world built by hard work and stable democracies are at this point clearly sinister.
Watching the most successful social experiment in the world destroyed by climate voodoo chanting doom is tragic beyond words.

    Gamecock re Sky News

I suspect (not that I watch it) Sky’s Climate News spots, will be paid for air time by some eco .org / Trust via their Com Cast mates, to ‘educate’ the populace. It wont be volunteered !

“The advisers also say the government can’t shy away from encouraging people to fly less and eat less meat.”

Except those conceiving and shaping the Policy. We all saw how this worked behind the Iron Curtain. ASA it came down, people fled in droves to where they thought the situation was better.

Two ways to accelerate this agenda: delete the policy makers, or delete the masses. These are people who are cutting off the tree branch they are sitting on.

NOT very bright. But then neither are they who enable these idiots.

What time do they want us to switch off the lights and turn in for the night?

So no *unprecedented* warming in the modern era. Fake climate crisis busted again.

Unelected and unaccountable Climate Change Committee …
Yet another ‘think tank’ whose rational thoughts have tanked.

  12. Phoenix44 says:

Thankfully this government is so craven and so feeble it is quite happy to waffle endlessly about what ought to be done whilst doing very little to actually do it. They know that any actual overt restrictions on meat, flying or gas boilers will be met with fury from voters. The CCC is a bunch of imbecilies who have fooled themselves into thinking they are in charge and they will be listened to. That hasn’t stopped this government attempting to achieve some of its aims by stealth – it has done nothing to support aviation and is quite happy to destroy the holiday industry by making it extremely difficult for us to go on holiday – but it will not come out and say that’s what it is doing.

Press release: Drax kickstarts planning process to expand its iconic ‘Hollow Mountain’ Cruachan Power Station
    24 June 2021

Renewable energy company Drax Group is kickstarting the planning process to build a new underground pumped hydro storage power station – more than doubling the electricity generating capacity at its iconic Cruachan facility in Scotland.

The project, announced as the UK prepares to host the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, will support almost 900 jobs in rural areas across Scotland during construction and will provide critical storage capacity needed to support a net zero power system.

The 600MW power station will be located inside Ben Cruachan – Argyll’s highest mountain – and increase the site’s total capacity to 1.04GW. The new power station would be built within a new, hollowed-out cavern which would be large enough to fit Big Ben on its side, to the east of Drax’s existing 440MW pumped storage hydro station. More than a million tonnes of rock would be excavated to create the cavern and other parts of the power station. The existing upper reservoir, which can hold 2.4 billion gallons of water, has the capacity to serve both power stations.

Drax CEO: “Last year, the UK’s lack of energy storage capacity meant wind farms had to be paid to turn off and we lost out on enough renewable power to supply a million homes. We need to stop renewable power from going to waste by storing it, and Drax is ready to move mountains to do just that.”

  14. Gamecock says:

    UK has about 68,000,000 people.

2050 Net Zero UK will support perhaps 8 million. So in fairness to CCC, they are correct. You need to start killing 2 million people a year. If you wait til 2050, some might be upset by the carnage. Start now, so it doesn’t look so ugly.
