BBC: Climate reporting reaches melting point

Antarctica

More meltdown than melting. The author reckons ‘Tackling global warming will be the central project of the 21st Century’, but the NSIDC graphic below doesn’t suggest anything alarming. No doubt the BBC will be offsetting all those supposedly wicked ‘carbon emissions’ from flying a reporter round the world. Sadly the trip only extended to West Antarctica, parts of which are close to a significant volcanic region, whereas the majority of the ice is in East Antarctica. See: Scientists discover 91 volcanoes below Antarctic ice sheet. In 2015 a NASA study reported ice gains exceeding losses in Antarctica as a whole, with the net losses being in the west and the net gains in the east.

A trip to a melting glacier will shape how the BBC’s new climate editor reports on climate change, says the BBC.

You cannot help but be awed by the scale of Antarctica, the great white continent.

I visited just before the pandemic struck and it is impossible not to feel humbled in the presence of something that seems so much bigger and more powerful than you.

But that sensation is an illusion.

When we finally flew over the front of the enormous glacier after weeks of travelling, I found myself staring down at an epic vision of shattered ice.

As I wrote at the time, it felt like I’d reached the frontline of climate change; a place where the equilibrium that has held our world in balance for thousands of years was slipping and crashing.

Satellite monitoring shows that the overall rate of ice loss from West Antarctica has increased five-fold over a 25-year period. This one glacier – Thwaite’s glacier – alone now accounts for 4% of global sea level rise.

Needless to say, this acceleration is a result of us humans polluting the air with greenhouse gases [Talkshop comment – mere assertion]. That fact [sic] explodes any impression that the ice is overwhelming. The opposite is true, we are overwhelming the ice.

  1. Whaddya mean the volcanoes are gonna melt the ice? But muh humans! But muh CO2.

Singularly focused people will doubtful ever be able to come up with meaningful, systemic solutions for complex, systemic challenges.

Really? Leaving one-eyed reporting behind, we find…

Antarctic glacier may be more stable than initially feared
    June 17, 2021

The world’s largest ice sheets may be in less danger of sudden collapse than previously predicted, according to new findings published this week in the journal Science.

A team of international researchers, led by University of Michigan, have simulated the demise of one of the world’s largest and most unstable glaciers – Thwaites Glaciers in West Antarctica. They modeled the collapse of various heights of ice cliffs—near-vertical formations that occur where glaciers and ice shelves meet the ocean. They found that instability doesn’t always lead to rapid disintegration.

Duh! Open Antarctic and Open Arctic are when there can be evaporation and snowfall. It doesn’t snow in and around the polar regions when the oceans are frozen. Cold cannot cause ice ages, only ice can cause ice ages.

It snows with evaporation and snowfall and IR out in the warmest times in the cold places where ice is sequestered.

The more ice starts dumping into the oceans and chills them to form sea ice and cool the climate until the more ice is depleted.

IR out in warmest times results in ice ages, bigger and bigger for millions of years and now, little ice ages. In the coldest times the ice cools by thawing and reflecting. Ice ages stopped getting bigger and suddenly became small because, finally, Antarctica and Greenland and other cold places keep the ice sequestered and it cannot enter the oceans and provide enough evaporation and snowfall for another major ice age.

There is not enough IR out in coldest times to explain the cold. The sun is not cold enough to explain the cold. Only thawing and reflecting ice cause cold.

Say this on your website. Ask Judah Cohen and/or Joe Bastardi and/or Jay Lehr, and/or Frank Billingsly and/or Neil Frank and/or Weather People, Not Climate People. People use Static Energy Balance Charts and do not include Ice Thawing. Climate is like any complicated system, there are dynamic cycles.

Long term cycles always have periods of open polar oceans powered by tropical currents during which there is more ice accumulation. Long term cycles always have periods of closed polar oceans when ice dumped into turbulent salt water forms sea ice and the sequestered ice depletes.

    Another day, another hobgoblin.

  5. In that report, this was written: According to the new analysis of satellite data, the Antarctic ice sheet showed a net gain of 112 billion tons of ice a year from 1992 to 2001. That net gain slowed to 82 billion tons of ice per year between 2003 and 2008.

This means sea level has not risen in this time period.

Length of Day has decreased since 1972 when the Atomic Clock was put into service to measure accurately.

This means sea level has not risen since 1972.

Btw those 91 volcanoes were in addition to the 47 they already knew about.

  8. stpaulchuck says:

some time back at the time they discovered those ‘new’ volcanoes they also discovered a massive blow of CO2 coming from there as well. So much for my backyard grill melting the glaciers.

  9. Chaswarnertoo says:

But Antarctica has got 2 degrees C COLDER since 1980. Fact.

  10. But it might only take a few decades for Antarctica’s growth to reverse, according to Zwally. “If the losses of the Antarctic Peninsula and parts of West Antarctica continue to increase at the same rate they’ve been increasing for the last two decades, the losses will catch up with the long-term gain in East Antarctica in 20 or 30 years — I don’t think there will be enough snowfall increase to offset these losses.”

If they studied ice core records and history, they could possibly understand that the Warmest Times with Thawed Polar Oceans Promote the Evaporation and Snowfall that Rebuilds Sequestered Ice in Polar Regions. Climate People, I cannot call them Scientists, are really blinded by the huge profits from promoting alarmism. Telling the truth about climate change would cost them their jobs and their dishonest green investments. They must lie to continue to get richer from the fraud.

  11. Phoenix44 says:

“…the equilibrium that has held our world in balance for thousands of years…”

So no Minoan, Roman or Medieval Warm Periods then? No Little Ice Age? No decreases or increases in volcanism in that area in thousands of years?

It’s so obviously false and childish. So utterly narcissistic. What a world we live in now, ruled by ignorant children who think reality must be what they believe.

  12. hdhuffman says:

Criminals, of monumental proportions and insanity (being self-destructive to a fault). There are no competent “climate scientists”, in our STABLE, UNCHANGING WORLD (including the form of Antarctica, which is famous in earliest so-called myths, 20 thousand years old, just as it is today), and no competent politicians. We are in the hands of children, and “Lord of the Flies” (out-of-control, self-destructive) ones at that. The trick is ousting them all (AND their unthinking supporters, each and every cultist one of them) without ousting Western Civilization too, in a world full of competing, aggressive false dogmas (like Islam, and merely fascist — and above all COERCIVE — utopian dreams/nightmares)…time for a new “Greatest Generation” (or one of the old ones will do).

An unprecedented human cockroach invasion. Alien pod creatures (see, that is what was wrong with those “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” movies, that wouldn’t stop after the first one, with its happy ending, of RECOGNITION of the threat: The dogmatic divisions between various peoples and cultures were allowed to continue, and the real pod people grew , generation after generation, over the last 50 to a hundred years, until they broke out with Obama et al., under the guise of a “Revolt of the Victims”…and all of the “victims” have come out of the woodwork. Cockroaches. Criminals. Spoiled children. Loons.

Low solar activity making its point?

  14. oldbrew says:

The Arctic sea ice minimum was at its lowest in recent history (since 1979) in 2012, at 3.41 million km. The corresponding figure this year was 4.72 million, i.e. over 38% higher than 2012.

    http://spaceref.com/earth/nasa-finds-2021-arctic-summer-sea-ice-12th-lowest-on-record.html

Where’s the ‘rapid decline’ now? CO2 is not correlating with the data, maybe even anti-correlating. Other forces are at work, as always.

  15. Coeur de Lion says:

Wrt polar ice, do we have any numbers for say 1935? I’ll bet like today. (AMO cycle).
