Show us the money! Rich nations accused of ‘betrayal’ at Bonn climate talks

Crazy world of climate finance [image credit: renewableenergyfocus.com]

The wealthier (due largely to intensive use of coal, oil and gas) countries have worked out that paying any money that looks like ‘climate compensation’ would be seen as an open-ended admission of liability, leading to endless claims from those less fortunate.

As key talks end, rich and poor countries are at loggerheads on the divisive issue of loss and damage, says BBC News.
. . .
Poorer nations say rich ones have betrayed them by dragging their feet on paying for centuries of climate damage.

They were hoping to get compensation talks onto the official agenda for November’s COP27 climate conference.

But on the final day of climate talks in Bonn that is in doubt.

Developing countries say they are reeling from climate change caused by richer countries’ emissions over hundreds of years.

They say they need money to deal with the impacts of climate change because they suffer the effects more than richer nations and have less financial capacity to cope.

Island states and developing countries agreed to cut carbon emissions at last year’s COP26 climate conference on the back of promises that richer nations would finally set up a compensation process.

But in the discussions in Bonn, they say the issue has been side-lined by the US and Europe.

“The compromise was based on an understanding that countries would be willing to start talking and taking decisions on dealing with how to get that finance flowing for loss and damage,” said Alex Scott from E3G, an environmental think tank.

“And we haven’t seen that come to fruition here. Instead, we’ve seen a workshop set up to talk about how we can fix some of the problems.”

For many participants, a concept known as loss and damage has become the key issue in the global climate negotiations.

“Poorer nations say rich ones have betrayed them by dragging their feet on paying for centuries of climate damage.”. Ok, so let the poorer nations first prove the richer ones have ’caused’ any change in climate by their CO2 emissions before they get any reparations.

    “Centuries of climate damage”?

Does the BBC simply not bother itself with facts at all these days?

  3. Ned Nikolov, Ph.D. says:

This article is just an ugly piece of dehumanizing, medieval type of propaganda. There is not a single piece of scientific evidence put forward, not even by the corrupt IPCC, that human industrial activity has been “damaging” the Earth’s climate for centuries! That’s just a made-up, wacko claim by some developing countries in an effort to extort money from the developed countries. This claim appears to be rooted in another nonsensical concept pushed by Leftists called “environmental justice“… The whole thing is just appalling! We as humanity have devolved in our thinking to a lower level than medieval superstitions, which is very sad to watch!

The pro-IPCC wealthier countries have set themselves up for decades of strife over their own climate obsessions. Citizens are pushing climate alarmism in the courts to demand ‘action’, and other nations play the victim card to try and extract money from whoever they feel like blaming for adverse weather or climatic conditions.

    Why vote for this?

  6. Gamecock says:

‘Developing countries say they are reeling from climate change caused by richer countries’ emissions over hundreds of years.’

So how many decades do they get to ‘develop?’ Calling them ‘developing countries’ over several generations reaches the point of absurdity.

Finish developing, and you can be a richer country, too.

Could have thrown things at QT tonight AFTER hearing news from Congo – largest Peat slab in world, etc etc etc,,,,,,, Newsreaders / presenters/ etc should be held liable for the nonsense they broadcast . No thought just blab. and the weather forecasts are all wrong here again, locally, Hot cold wet dry all in the UK at once. – Marvellous Add together and average = average, – nothing to write home about

  8. Paul Vaughan says:

    1. Sign a peace deal years ago over Donbas & Taiwan.
    2. Strictly ban lockdowns and sanctions, which appear purposely designed to cause extreme inequality to uplift “elite” (criminals in the current context) while depressing others everywhere (especially in the homeland seems to be their deliberately unstated desire – and may be what their passive-aggressive threats of “unspecified consequences” really mean). The individual financial aggressors are the problem. Directing random scattershot across the entire world population appears to be how they deflect attention from their “unaffordable ethics” crusade. “The west” is not the problem, but individual westerners have certainly become an unaffordable worldwide financial terror, threatening everyone savagely, severely, and relentlessly (except their preciously “elite” directors). Who is letting these individuals get away with this while scapegoating “the west”?

Not aligned with any political party, group, or country anywhere (all look severely corrupt today).
Not interested (at all) in debate.
