Greenhouse gases ‘reached record highs’ in 2021, say UN climate worriers

Climate alarmists love to refer to ‘heat-trapping’ greenhouse gases, but never explain how trace gases – or any gases – can trap heat in an openly convecting atmosphere. The UN also conveniently forgets that water vapour is by far the most prevalent radiative gas, while claiming ‘the warming effect of greenhouse gases has risen by nearly 50% between 1990 and 2021’. Methane is measured in parts per *billion* in the atmosphere but is still deemed good for regular alarm attempts. All grist to their COP27 mill.

The world saw a record jump in levels of methane in the atmosphere last year as the main heat-trapping greenhouse gases reached new highs, UN experts said.

The World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) annual bulletin shows the three main greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – all reached record high concentrations in the atmosphere in 2021, showing the world was “heading in the wrong direction” on climate change, says The Ecologist.

And potent greenhouse gas methane saw the biggest year-on-year jump in levels since measurements began nearly 40 years ago.

Cement

The WMO said the reason for the leap in methane was not clear but it seems to be the result of both biological and human-induced processes.

Methane, a strong but short-lived greenhouse gas, is produced from a range of sources, including natural wetlands, agriculture and fossil fuel production.

The report said the increase in methane levels in recent years was thought to be predominantly from biological sources such as wetlands or rice paddies.

But it was not yet clear if that was partly due to increased emissions from wetlands as a result of global warming speeding up the natural decomposition processes that give rise to methane.

Increases in levels of carbon dioxide – the main greenhouse gas – from 2020 to 2021 was larger than the average annual growth rate over the last decade, with concentrations reaching 415.7 parts per million (ppm) last year, mostly due to fossil fuels and cement production.

Temperatures

Carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere have increased nearly 50% since the beginning of the industrial revolution, when it was around 280ppm.

Nearly half (48%) of the total carbon emissions from human activities during the 2011-2020 period built up in the atmosphere, while 26% was absorbed by the oceans and 29% in land ecosystems such as forests, the report said.

But experts are concerned that the ability of natural land areas and oceans to act as “sinks” absorbing carbon dioxide will become less effective, reducing their ability to act as a buffer against larger temperature rises.

Overall, the warming effect of greenhouse gases has risen by nearly 50% between 1990 and 2021.

WMO secretary-general Petteri Taalas said the bulletin “has underlined, once again, the enormous challenge – and the vital necessity – of urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent global temperatures rising even further in the future”.

It is wonderful how statistic percentages get bandied around these days. This lot above adds up to 103%🤭, which prompts one to ask 103% of What TOTAL?
I think this refers to 103% of the 0.35%(?,can’t recall exact figure) which is the actual human contribution to CO2 levels.

Oh Yes: It is scary dancing on the head of a pin.

  5. oldbrew says:

Natural warming since the Little Ice Age obviously includes the oceans, and warmer oceans absorb/retain progressively less CO2 than before. This is well known.

‘The solubility of carbon dioxide in water decreases as the temperature is raised, and it is driven off into the atmosphere.’

  6. catweazle666 says:

In fact Cognog2, the percentage of anthropogenic CO2 that remains in the atmosphere at any point in time is the same percentage as its contribution to the overall CO2 cycle – ~4%, key word being “cycle”.

The CO2 sinks are incapable of distinguishing a molecule of anthropogenic CO2 from a molecule from any natural process, the molecules don’t have little labels on them stating their provenance.

I think their “climate scientists” use the same logic as the power companies that sell “100% Green electricity”.

Hoch, and all that when the world was just about shut down ….. didn’t they come out and tell us all that guff since 2020 ?

  8. Graeme No.3 says:

“Methane level increased abruptly” but no figures. Did it actually increase or did they “adjust” its “greenhouse potential” again?
John Tyndall measured IR absorption by methane in 1860 as 4.5 times higher than that of carbon dioxide. I was 12 times in the first IPCC report and has climbed ever upwards since. The last figure I saw was 85 times, which would by simple arithmetic using the claimed increase make it responsible for half the global warming claimed as occurring.

Well, we couldn’t call it the Rising Hysteria Constant as the Greens have that jammed at full throttle.
And thanks for an idea for my weekly letter to the local paper which has been annoying the local Greens when they get published (as they do now).

Just at the coldest time of the Maunder Minimum. What a surprise that it got hotter from there on as the cycle rose to a peak around this time.

Was there a decline the year before during the Covid lockdowns?
    = = =
The Dalton Minimum was a period of low sunspot count, representing low solar activity, named after the English meteorologist John Dalton, lasting from about 1790 to 1830[1] or 1796 to 1820,[2] corresponding to the period solar cycle 4 to solar cycle 7.
    . . .
Like the Maunder Minimum and Spörer Minimum, the Dalton Minimum coincided with a period of lower-than-average global temperatures. During that period, there was a variation of temperature of about 1 °C in Germany.

The cause of the lower-than-average temperatures and their possible relation to the low sunspot count are not well understood.
    . . .
One must also consider that the rise in volcanism may have been triggered by lower levels of solar output as there is a weak but statistically significant link between decreased solar output and an increase in volcanism.

Such minima recur over the centuries. The next one may be close.

‘coincided’ with lower temps? — but that’s why those periods got the ‘Minimum’ tag.

The problem isn’t methane. Trigger warning: curmudgeon speaking.

“Methane is measured in parts per *billion* in the atmosphere but is still deemed good for regular alarm attempts.”

50 years ago, I worked for the state pollution control authority. We had an electronic oxygen sensor (DO) in our lab. “Specific Ion Electrode” was the hot new technology. Calibrated down to a single decimal parts per million. Years later, when I heard of instruments measuring parts per billion, I just didn’t believe it possible. Took a while for me to accept it.

I believed that if the concentration were that low, why should we care, anyway?

“And potent greenhouse gas methane saw the biggest year-on-year jump in levels since measurements began nearly 40 years ago.”

We have a problem caused by the advance in technology. We were simply better off not knowing.

‘Methane, which exists as both a liquid and a gas in Titan’s frigid (-179°C) skies’
    https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/5270/atmospheric-methane

Clearly a *potent* greenhouse gas due to *heat trapping* 🤓

Titan’s atmosphere consists of about 98 percent nitrogen with most of the remainder being methane.
    https://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/solarsystem/Titan_Atmosphere.html

So, Titan ~2% and Earth 0.00019% methane (0.00017% when this was written in 2005)… https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/5270/atmospheric-methane

  16. One villain just isn’t enough for the UN so they boosted methane up to #2 on their list. The reason: methane is used by evil humans for heating and cooking, generating electricity and making fertilizer. Don’t forget methane is almost always found in crude oil deposits. I’ve concluded greens and warmists hate humans so much they’re happy to kill as many of us as possible by depriving us of energy and food to “save the planet”.

Detection Of A CO2 Climate Signal In Radiative Forcing Is Again Foiled By Clouds
By Kenneth Richard on 20. October 2022

It so difficult to constrain errors in identifying the cloud impact on Earth’s radiation budget that the orders-of-magnitude smaller radiative impact of CO2 cannot be distinguished from noise.
    . . .
It has long been estimated that when clouds are present they dominate as the driver of greenhouse effect forcing. Quantitatively, the greenhouse effect of clouds is larger than a 100-fold increase in the CO2 concentration (~40,000 ppm).
