Vastly higher? Enormous? Staggering? – should we be shocked? No, because none of these words from the article below appear in the study itself, which notes: ‘We find that, between 1960 and 1989, sea level in the Mediterranean fell’. It then ‘started accelerating rapidly’. The study also admits: ‘The relative contributions from sterodynamic changes (i.e., changes in ocean density and circulation) and land-ice melting to this recent increase in the rate of Mediterranean sea-level rise remain unclear.’ Looks like the press release resorted to colourful language.

Scientists from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) have discovered a substantial rise in sea-levels in the Mediterranean Sea, using a vital new method to measure changes in sea-level, says the NOC.
The study, published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, demonstrated that sea levels in the Mediterranean Sea have risen at vastly higher rates over the past 20 years compared to the entirety of the 20th century.
The study revealed that sea level in the Mediterranean Sea increased by about 7cm in the period 2000–2018.
Previous changes in sea-level rise in the Mediterranean Sea have been highly unpredictable due to limited observational data but using this latest method, scientists analysed sea-level data from tide gauges and satellites to reveal an enormous increase as a result of ocean warming and land ice-melt.
Dr Francisco Mir Calafat, Senior scientist from the Marine Physics and Ocean Climate group at the National Oceanography Centre, said: “Our research demonstrates how climate change has sped up sea-level rise in the Mediterranean significantly since the turn of the millennium through increased melting of land ice. This is especially true in the Adriatic, Aegean and Levantine Seas which are rising even faster than the rest of the Mediterranean.”
The previous lack of long-term sea-level records has hampered the ability to make long-term plans for local coastal defences.
Dr Calafat continued: “This is the first time we are able to clearly distinguish between natural variations in sea-level rise and changes arising from sustained human impact in the Mediterranean Sea, based on observations alone. We have achieved this by analysing data from tide gauges and satellite altimetry together with sea-level patterns of response to land-ice melting, which explain how sea-level rises thousands of miles away from melted land ice sheets.”
“The new estimates will allow us to detect acceleration in sea-level rise much earlier, allowing more time to increase adaptation. We expect this new dataset will be extremely valuable not only to the wider science community, but to policymakers, coastal planners, and coastal communities at large.”

Now we know why it is so difficult to verify the sea level rise: surprisingly, it is happening mostly in the Mediterranean 🙂
About Sea Level Rise:
The Atomic Clocks were put in place to measure Time Extremely Accurately, in 1972. Less Leap Seconds were added to the time every decade since that time.
A rising sea level would increase the Inertia of the Earth Crust, Conservation of Momentum would slow the Rotation Rate of the Earth Crust. More Leap Seconds would need to be added more frequently. The Exact Opposite of that has occurred. The last leap second was added in 2016, six years ago.
Since this is Absolute Proof that they have mislead us about Sea Level Rise, it clearly follows that the rest of the Climate Alarmism is Also Fabricated!
Most Land Ice is near the spin axis of the rotating earth crust while much more ocean is near the equator where sea level rise would significantly increase the inertia of the spinning earth crust.
This is absolutely valid Proof that Sea Level is Lower Now than it was in 1972!
Sea Level has Fallen for Fifty Years, yet they say it has risen and the rise rate is accelerating.
If sea level Ever Rises, Added Leap Seconds will be an Immediate Indicator.
On our first trip to Europe, 14 years ago, earlier in this century, we visited the Blue Grotto, at the Isle of Capri, went inside on a rowboat, I checked to see if there were still tours, because rising sea levels will certainly shut that tour down, instead of a rowboat ride, it will become a scuba tour. It appears the boat tours are still available.
‘Scientists from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) have discovered a substantial rise in sea-levels in the Mediterranean Sea, using a vital new method to measure changes in sea-level’
Well, if it bothers you, go back to using the old way.
Strange, if you actually go down to the shore and look at the tide gauge you can’t see very much change. In fact to locals haven’t moved from their seaside houses and they still park with impunity in the rain storm channel at Collioure which, if the good doctor were to be believed would be impossible. Maybe he should actually leave his ivory tower and physically check.
I have described this process before. I add another step no one called out.
We have a report on a report of a report that was reported. The tale is being retold too many times. You know what that causes.
Dr Calafat et al originally reported at
https://doi.org/10.1029/2022JC019061
Which is now published by AGU.
NOC then does a report on the study.
Oldbrew notices it and posts it here.
As usual, the big problem comes from the media report (NOC) of the report. They mash it up to suit their target audience. It would be difficult to mess it up as much if one were TRYING.
From the study:
The small rates of sea-level change in the Mediterranean over 1960–2000 were partly due to a persistent increase in atmospheric pressure over the basin related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) (Gomis et al., 2008; Tsimplis et al., 2005; Tsimplis & Josey, 2001).
That’s not the ‘climate change’ the article is referring to, i.e. land-ice melt which started well before that.
The plain language summary says they were ‘using probabilistic methods’ 🤔

Sinking Alexandria faces up to coming catastrophe
Even by the United Nations’ best case scenario, a third of the city will be underwater or uninhabitable by 2050, with 1.5 million of its six million people forced to flee their homes.
Its ancient ruins and historic treasures are also in grave danger from the Mediterranean.

The Egyptians will be pushing that one at their own COP27 no doubt. But Alexandria has had its own geological, silting and other such problems for centuries. For example…

‘Flee.’
Now that’s funny, I don’t care who you are.
Looking at Google Earth to see the elevations in Alexandria, one quickly sees that to the SW side of the city, there are residential towers at 3-4 feet. Should sea level actually rise, it’s 11 feet only two buildings in from the coast. So it’s NOT a third of the city, and they will have to FLEE 50 feet. How many will die from failing to move 50 feet in 30 years ?!?!
Boris Johnson was wittering about Alexandria at COP26…

Funny thing, I’ve been visiting various points on the shores of the Mediterranean man and boy for over 60 years and I’ve not noticed any change in sea level in any of the places I’ve been to.
Ah, don’t tell me, I bet it’s the product of a computer game – er sorry – “model”!
Reblogged this on Calculus of Decay .
Once they mention satellite altimetry, we should all become suspicious, because sea-level data based on satellite measurements show clear signs of having been manipulated. Sea level rise (SLR) is supposed to be primarily fueled by the oceans’ thermal expansion and partly by the influx of water from melting glaciers on land. This implies that SLR should be well correlated with sea-surface temperature (SST). However, the data show SLR being almost perfectly correlated with atmospheric CO2 and very poorly related with SST! This is physically impossible unless someone manipulated the SLR records to make it match the Keeling CO2 curve. Look at these graphs and decide for yourself, if this is a fraud or not:
“Sea level rise (SLR) is supposed to be primarily fueled by the oceans’ thermal expansion and partly by the influx of water from melting glaciers on land.”
Then there is the elephant in the room . . . the basin isn’t fixed. Nor measured. We know many forces constantly reshape the ocean floor. SLR can be due to changes in the container, not the content. We simply DO NOT KNOW.
Right on cue, here we go…
Will developed nations pay compensation for climate damage? The issue that could make or break the biggest climate summit of the year

Meanwhile, as the sea level on northern Egypt’s Mediterranean coast creeps higher, it batters cities like Alexandria and salt poisons the ground in the fertile Nile delta.

As said before, Alexandria has had various problems with the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile for centuries at least, erosion due to its location and topography being one of them…
Study (1999):
Fourteen beach profiles covered a period of 54 years (1936-1990) were analyzed to understand the erosional and accretional behavior as well as the sediment drift pattern inside the Eastern Harbour of Alexandria. Bottom relief deformation defined from profile survey data suggest that major erosional area with a vertical shift value of – 7.0 m was located around the centra l part of the harbour. whereas accretion one was prevailed on the eastern (+2.5m) and western (+ 1.5m) sides. The high value of accretion to the east of the erosion area. demonst rating that there is strong eastward sediment drift. This drift is due to the oblique approach of waves arrived from the WNW- NNW sectors and the resulting anticlockwise current inside the harbour. The identified pattern of sediment drift based on bottom relief deformation is supported by grain-size characteristics in areas of erosion and accretion.’ [bold added]

Trying to frame such issues as if caused by humans, with a supposed remedy of lowering their ’emissions’ is a bad joke.
@oldbrew,
I find it somehow difficult to believe that this new study claiming a rapid rise of the Mediterranean Sea Level over the past 20 years coincidentally came out just 2 months before the COP27 Summit in Egypt… 🙂
One can be sure that, if there is money to be made from the “climate crisis”, there will be no shortage of parties pushing junk science to get that money.
Indeed, Ned. South Africa just bid for $84 billion over 5 years.

Should the Med encroach further on Alexandria, they have 600 MILES of empty land south of it where they can resettle. Just moving back fifty feet every ten years would give them all they need.
With their sandy coastline, I should expect perpetual shifting of the sand. We get vastly more in South Carolina, due to action of the Atlantic. Crying about how little they get seems silly.
@Gamecock
Independent studies of shoreline changes at hundreds of islands in the Pacific and Indian Oceans (where satellite altimetry claims the fastest sea-level rise has occurred during the past 29 years) failed to provide evidence for any sea-level rise over the past 40 – 100 years. Here are some recent references:
Duvat (2018) A global assessment of atoll island planform changes over the past decades.
Kench et al. (2018) Patterns of island change and persistence offer alternate adaptation pathways for atoll nations.

Sea-level rise only appears to have occurred in computer models and manipulated datasets.
Current science “news” has the stink of desperation that people have figured out the covid virus was no worse than a bad year of the flu, and that AGW is a sad joke whose wheels came off over a decade ago.
So what sort of theme will Panic Theater have to come up with to replace them?
