Move over, carbon credits. Here come ‘statistical megawatts’.

France is the only one of the 27 EU member states to have missed its objective for 2020, when renewable energy represented 19.1% of its consumption, below the 23% target, says Le Monde.

For failing to reach its European targets for renewable energy in 2020, which it had set itself a decade earlier, the French state will have to pay out several hundred million euros.

“It will cost France €500 million this year for not having met its target for renewable energy,” the Minister for Energy Transition told MPs on Monday, November 21, as reported by the French daily newspaper Libération.

Agnès Pannier-Runacher was appearing before the commissions on economic affairs and sustainable development, as part of the review of the bill for accelerating the development of renewable energy.

France is the only one of the 27 EU member states to have missed its goal two years ago. Renewable energy represented just 19.1% of its gross final energy consumption, well below the 23% target.

As this target is binding, France must now buy “statistical amounts” of renewable energy through a European mechanism from “good performers” who have exceeded their target.

“We are negotiating to buy statistical megawatts from Italy and Sweden,” said Ms. Pannier-Runacher.

So if the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow, you have to give Italy money.

And I’m sure the Italian number is wholly reliable!

Hilarious. Will the planet be impressed?

Just more tripe…. Forget it all: IT IS JUST A GAME and you have to play by the ( STUPID, yeah STUPID) rules. just as happens in uk with metal Pelicans / Storks / Herons. Too windy to fly, you ( they ) get paid. No wind no fee. ( wow). and all the rest. And yes, I ken, France has so much Nuclear power, you’d wonder what ever is the issue about. Lose lose situation. Bit like us in the UK whatever we do ( Plan ahead).
(an the dum blon on lnch-time poli life was as evasive about her living proximity to windfarms as that other git with Lady Sue. what are they trying to hide? ) For the connected presenters on tv, simplz: gridwatch. 20% wind today, Solar 2%. and as for P.Hitchens, please tell the whole story.

Oh dear, I have just come back from a walk up the hill where I saw the useless wind turbines down on the coast were, as normal, just standing there doing nothing. They never seem to be turning but I assume the owners get paid for the non production they produce.

The village just let another scam organisation install a lot of solar panels – in a place that is shaded from the sun most of the day.

    How stupid can they get?

  8. cognog2 says:

Pity the French as that 500million Euros could well have got a couple of their Nuclear Plants up and running.
Wonder how many deaths from the cold will result?

  9. stpaulchuck says:

how much do they have to pay for not supplying energy for heating, cooking, and lights?

reminds me of one of my favorite memes: I have to stop saying “How stupid can you be?” I think people are starting to take it as a challenge.

France’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm enters full operation
    30 November 2022

The Saint-Nazaire Offshore Wind Farm will produce green electricity equivalent to the needs of 700,000 households annually

    https://www.energylivenews.com/2022/11/30/frances-first-commercial-scale-offshore-wind-farm-enters-full-operation/

That’s the best site taken. Where are all the rest going to go?

  13. catweazle666 says:

How many hundred thousand households can be supplied by a statistical megawatt?
    Inquiring minds want to know!

  14. cognog2 says:

    From the link:
With 480 MWAtts Capacity this may statistically produce circa 144 MWAtts at circa 30% efficiency average around the year. Divide this amongst 70000 household and each gets about 2.05 Kilowatts per household, coming through the wall sockets; But it gets worse as this is an average; so some days they will get nothing and others, with luck ,say 8 Kilowatts.?

Marketing is one thing but outright lies are another, particularly where journalists blithely go along with it all, when their job is to check these things.
I ask: When was energy ever measured in ‘Homes Serviced’? That is real snake oil in my book.
