A tough lead-up to Christmas for the US and Canada thanks to this Arctic blast, as the media are calling it. Colourful claims about the ‘rapidly warming Arctic’ may have been overdone.
– – –
Tens of millions of Americans endured bone-chilling temperatures, blizzard conditions, power outages and cancelled Christmas plans as an extreme winter storm gripped much of the country, reports Sky News.

More than 200 million people – about 60% of the US population – were under some form of winter weather advisory or warning on Friday, the National Weather Service said, calling it a “historic winter storm”.

Temperatures across central states have plunged, with the mercury dipping to -50F (-45.6C) in Montana.

Places like Des Moines, Iowa, will feel like -37F (-38C) making it possible to suffer frostbite in less than five minutes, according to the National Weather Service.

More than 1.4 million homes and businesses were without power on Friday morning and holiday travel plans were upended as more than 3,100 flights in and out of US airports were cancelled on the day before Christmas Eve.

Fatalities have already begun to be reported with three deaths so far recorded on roads in Kentucky according to the state’s Governor.

The storm has now intensified into a bomb cyclone according to the National Weather Service, which says the atmospheric pressure of the storm has dropped rapidly enough over the past 24 hours to classify the system that way.

The huge storm stretched from border to border. In Canada, British Columbia reached a low of -62.7F (-52.6C). And in Mexico, migrants waited near the US border in unusually cold temperatures for a court decision on lifting asylum restrictions.

Florida residents have been warned to look out for iguanas falling from trees as sub-zero temperatures can immobilise the cold-blooded creatures, causing them to lose their grip and fall to the ground.

More than 181 million people are under wind chill alerts and 11 million are affected by blizzard warnings. Forecasters said temperatures in some areas have dropped more than 30 degrees in a matter of minutes.

By the time the weather system has moved through, an estimated 192 million people across 46 states will have experienced wind chills below zero.

Hundreds of drivers stranded

In South Dakota, more than 100 drivers became stranded when the Arctic blast hit the state with sub-zero temperatures.

As authorities worked to rescue those stranded, the local sheriff’s office told drivers to stay in their vehicles and call 911.

Arctic cold extended its grip over much of the United States on Friday, combining with snow, ice and howling winds from a deadly winter storm roaring out of the Midwest to disrupt energy supplies and thwart travel for millions of Americans ahead of the holiday weekend.
    . . .
Weather forecasters said the massive storm over the Midwest had materialised into a “bomb cyclone” – a phenomenon caused by a drastic, rapid drop in atmospheric pressure that forms a kind of cold-weather hurricane.

  3. Ned Nikolov, Ph.D. says:

Yes indeed! That’s the coldest snowstorm I’ve experienced since I came to the US in 1991! The frigid arctic air went down to the Gulf of Mexico making temperatures even in Dallas TX plummet to -18 C… Good thing that it only lasted 3 days. Today (Dec. 24, 2022) we have a “heat wave” in Northern Colorado phishing temperatures up to -11 C… 🙂

  4. oldbrew says:

In the New York region it’s being compared to the 1977 blizzard, possibly worse this time. Snow drifts, wind chill, no visibility etc.

I understand you don’t like too much politics or religion in climate-related blog, but I believe this was politics-related climate event…

Same as after “Abaddon” Biden Fraud, which was “US Theft”, there followed a terrible freeze in February 2021, due to exceptional polar pressure high, which started to build up just after Electoral College and intensified after Inauguration to strike on Feb 10 2021… You probably remember, how wind farms in Texas froze and Biden’s energy admin forbade to increase power plant output (due to some insane emission limits) in order to hurt Texans…

Ned N observation that “– frigid arctic air went down to the Gulf of Mexico” and PA Semi’s pics, point to a hypothesis.
Cold and dense arctic air sinks down the gravitational gradient. It is just past winter solstice, approaching perihelion, and with all planets spread to one side away from N pole.

  11. Graeme No.3 says:

oldmanK: How does that explain Australia’s cool/cold year (3 La Niña in a row) and the current hot? weather over Christmas in the south of the continent?

  12. oldmanK says:

Graeme No.3: it is an unstudied and untested concept. However the gravitational gradient from sun and planets is towards the ecliptic plane. Down under its another story.
A second point is that its a freak condition of timing of planetary alignment.

A curious situation I noticed earlier with storm Ian (am presently interested in planetary alignments in prehistory). Planetary alignment of sun, moon, earth and Jupiter at its closest approach. A drop in grav const ‘g’ causes tidal pull but also a throttling process in atmosphere converting potential energy to kinetic (same as stationary stage in steam turbine). Occurred at midnight -as per hypo– Florida. Was it so???

  13. oldbrew says:

There are no west-east mountain ranges on the North American continent, or at least none big enough to divert a north-south movement of a powerful wind-driven cold air mass. Fast-moving weather systems bringing large temperature variations from the Arctic/Canada towards the Gulf of Mexico, or vice versa, are always a possibility.

    Published 9 hours ago

The scope of the winter storm has been unprecedented, stretching from Canada as far south as the Rio Grande.

Forecasters say the storm will ease off in the next few days, but the advice remains to avoid travelling unless essential.
    . . .
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul – a native of Buffalo – said : “This will go down in history as Buffalo’s most devastating storm.”

“It is [like] going to a war zone and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking,” she told reporters on Sunday evening.

  14. oldmanK says:

oldbrew: one small point re ‘wind-driven cold air mass’. It is not wind driven since the very movement of the air mass constitutes the wind. Something else is driving it.

  15. oldbrew says:

Wind is air in motion, travelling between areas of different pressure.

    @oldManK
About all planets on one side – their gravity force is negligible by few orders of magnitude, compared to Sun and Moon…

If the ordinary tides do not stir polar air down, then planetary tides at least 100x weaker do not stir that either…

Australia cold this year is most probably explained by a volcanic eruption on south hemisphere at start of this year… (D.Dubyne on Youtube channel Adapt2030 has been speaking about that recently)

‘Blizzard of the century’ leaves nearly 50 dead across US

Erie County Sheriff John Garcia called the storm “the worst” he has ever seen, with periods of zero visibility and authorities unable to respond to emergency calls.
    . . .
Due to frozen electric substations, some Erie County residents were not expected to regain power until Tuesday, with one substation reportedly buried under 18 feet of snow, a senior county official said.

  18. oldmanK says:

“Wind is air in motion, travelling between areas of different pressure.”
What the site does not say is that the difference in pressure is the result of the different densities of warm and cold air; what produces thermals, — and other related phenomena. However there the gravitational constant ‘g’ does not change.

Planetary alignments seem to alter ‘g’ to some extent. Not so much the distant planets but certainly the moon and Jupiter. The two instances mentioned above are the possible recent examples. It is not just that gravity effects the weather, but it seems to have a disturbing effect on earth’s orientation.

@ PA Semi: thanks for the offer.
The moon appears to have a disturbing effect as it approaches the conjunction at new moon, when Jupiter is in a favourable position, more so if Saturn is also near it. The two examples mentioned made me look back it something I had decided to ignore. You may find the planetary positions at date, and the events, on 13th October 1917 interesting.

  19. catweazle666 says:

Not forgetting the Coriolis effect that is responsible for the rotational force causing cyclone and anticyclone belts as air is driven by the thermal gradient between the Equator and the North and South poles.

What is the link between winter storms and global warming?

    ‘Active debate’

But the heart of the debate lies elsewhere: What is causing these increased disturbances in the polar vortex?

According to Cohen, they are linked to changes in the Arctic, accelerated by climate change. On the one hand, the rapid melting of sea ice, and on the other, an increase in snow cover in Siberia.

“This is a topic that I have been studying for over 15 years, and I am more confident today in the link than I have ever been in the past,” he told AFP.

This last point, however, remains “an active debate within the scientific community,” said Mann.

“Climate models are not yet capturing all of the underlying physics that may be relevant to how climate change is impacting the behavior of the jet stream.”

Future studies will still be needed in the coming years to unravel the mystery of these complex chain reactions.

    https://phys.org/news/2022-12-link-winter-storms-global.html

No mystery? When the atmosphere shrinks due to cooling, the jet stream gets compressed and becomes more wavy, according to this…

  26. catweazle666 says:

Is global warming behind America’s snowstorms?
    – by Ross Clark
    28 December 2022

If the polar vortex and jet stream really were being strongly influenced by rising global temperatures you would at least expect a trend to continue year after year as the global temperatures continued to increase.

In other words, this week’s weather in the US is just that: weather. But that will never do when you are trying to tell a morality tale about humans fouling their own nest through their own arrogance and stupidity: every adverse weather event must be blamed.

By the way, the last time the US mid-west saw such low temperatures, in 1977, it was interpreted by some as the sign of a coming ice age.

This is the date of Solar Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima, of cause I know it…
Planet positions were nothing special, either geocentric or heliocentric…
I think the God manipulated some weather phenomenon to create and move lens over that place in Portugal, since otherwise it would be visible from elsewhere also…
Of cause the Sun itself could not jump anywhere to be discernible…

And there have been a lot more writings on the Sun recently, with last of interest to Americans is probably https://pi-alpha.org/Eff_Joe

On December 19 there has been CO2 written in a shape of a Heart, with some related inscription in magnetic field pertaining to EU fit-for-55 taxation theft (of heating and private transport “emissions”) enacted the day before…

An article about that I’m currently contemplating…

  29. oldmanK says:

    PA Semi:
“Of cause the Sun itself could not jump anywhere to be discernible…”. Certainly.

The devil is in the detail. The sun was at the zenith. The moon was near, about a day or two before new moon. Two conditions when abnormal events can occur and could be observed.
Two possible situations: 1) The orientation of the earth may be disturbed. 2) Human perception from sensory organ of gravity may be altered due to gravity factor ‘g’ vector change, with the result that vision perception becomes confused.

The rise and fall of civilisations in the past were due to natural cycles, and never due to poor leadership. The latter where it existed only exacerbated the situation.
