Ouch! The ‘rapidly warming’ Arctic, as climate alarmists like to claim, can still pack a hefty punch. Weren’t such days supposed to be over, in theory at least?

Weather authorities say an “epic, generational Arctic outbreak” caused record cold temperatures and life-threatening conditions in the northeastern United States on Saturday, reports DW.com.
The summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire reported a low of minus 78 Celsius (minus 108 Fahrenheit) — the coldest temperature ever recorded in the United States.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Caribou, Maine, said it received reports of “frostquakes.”
“Just like earthquakes, [they] generate tremors, thundering sensations. These are caused by sudden cracks in frozen soil or underground water when it’s very cold,” the NWS office wrote on Twitter.
Strong winds also caused a tree branch in western Massachusetts to fall on a car, killing an infant, a district attorney said in a statement.
Homeless population braves record chill
Several cities in the Northeast set or tied record low temperatures for that date on Friday and Saturday. This created a significant risk for homeless people.
In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey took the unusual step of keeping the South Station transit hub open overnight so roughly 60 homeless people had a safe place to sleep.
“This is the coldest I ever, ever remember, and I worked the door at a bunch of clubs for 15 years,” one person taking shelter at the station, who has been homeless since December 2021, told the Associated Press news agency.

SILive.com: A flower begins to bud in NYC amid a mild winter. What does it mean?– Feb. 01, 2023
Talkshop comment – Not much.
Undoubtedly just weather causing record lows – sovwhycare record highs not just weather too?
Reblogged this on Calculus of Decay and commented:
Indeed….the other day a strong steady blast of wind without an off switch hit Greater Boston area and thermometer showed -11°F – not taking into account the wind chill…
Global cooling…cooling the Earth
[…] From Tallbloke’s Talkshop […]
As predicted, the negative (cooling) phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation is now well established.
It is to be hoped Solar Cycle 25 isn’t extreme as some suspect it is likely to be, if it is we’re in real trouble, and it will be fascinating to see what the AGW hoaxers make of it….

New England knows winter, but why so dangerously cold?
New England’s temperature swing is being caused by two things: The blast of Arctic air has reached the region just as a rapid cyclogenesis is developing over Labrador and Newfoundland, churning up powerful winds, said meteorologist Donald Dumont at the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine.
A cyclogenesis refers to an intensification of a cyclone or low-pressure storm system. Those winds mean cold air dipping to nearly 30 below could feel much colder, with wind chills of minus 50 (minus 45 Celsius) in some spots of the Northeast.

Another one for ‘boiling oceans’ Gore and his climate cronies to try and ignore.
The Guardian’s ‘weather tracker’ feature has mysteriously overlooked the extreme cold in north-east USA. Maybe they took the weekend off 🤔
Floods in Madagascar are prominent though…

Storm brings snow, disruption to Greek capital
The national civil protection service warned significant snowfall was expected on Monday morning in the Attica region around Athens, which is unused to harsh winters.
Around 3,500 people were trapped in their cars on the Athens ring road, and more than 200,000 homes and businesses were without power.

@Rod – The SSW, polar vortex break-up and zonal winds reversal is not baked in yet but mother nature does seem to be working on “La Bombe Surprise” for the UK AGW obsessives. I admit I don’t fully understand Zachary Lawrence models but you can see the forecasted break down of the vortex from his impressive graphics: StratObserve

Concordia station records Antarctica’s lowest January temperature on record
Wednesday, February 1, 2023
The temperature at Concordia weather station in Antarctica dropped to -51.2 °C (-60.1 °F) at 18:18 UTC on January 31, 2023, marking the lowest January temperature in Antarctica since meteorological observations there started in 1956.
This broke the previous record-low January temperature set on January 31, 2014, at Dome Fiji when -50.4 °C (-58.7 °F) was recorded.
The third lowest temperature ever recorded in Antarctica during the month of January is now -49.5 °C (-57.1 °F) recorded on January 31, 2008, at Dome A, the fourth is -48.9 °C (-56 °F) recorded on January 29, 1966, at Plateau Station, and the fifth -48.7 °C (-55.6 °F) recorded on January 29, 2023, at the Vostok station.
