Not before time. Climate obsession is now being used as a pretext for almost anything the government fancies spending, or not spending, money on. Don’t ask questions, just pay up and look big – seems to be the current policy on the costs.

The new department for energy security and net zero is facing one of its first challenges as the information watchdog launches an investigation into the government’s refusal to release the figures underpinning its flagship net zero strategy.
Opposition MPs said Grant Shapps, the new net zero secretary, must “show us the numbers”.
The strategy, published in 2021 on the eve of Cop26, was hailed by then prime minister Boris Johnson as “leading the world in ending our contribution to climate change”.
But officials at the department for business, energy and industrial strategy, from which the new department is hived off from, repeatedly refused freedom of information requests to reveal the bottom-up accounting of how measures from electric cars to heat pumps will eliminate emissions.

Quote: “The government didn’t have that big conversation with the country about what it would mean for them in practice… [despite being] the main plank of government policy making at the current time.”

Simple answer is/was that they didn’t have any figures it is/was all gut feelings from the green lobby for the simple reason there is no global warming. In fact many places are feeling global cooling at the moment and want nothing to do with the UN Church of Climatology, their failed predictions and stupid unverified meaningless computer models.
“Opposition MPs said Grant Shapps, the new net zero secretary, must “show us the numbers”. …. uhuh, just as they’d already agreed all the green crop legislation , years ago ‘without question’ – so why now ? …. … just as with Covid, just as with, as with, as with … you call that Parliament ? Time for a BIG change. I’m still looking for the weakest voussoir. Can anyone help?
flagship net zero strategy
If the rest of the fleet is as unseaworthy as the flagship we’re in trouble.
Rationally, eliminating emissions via electricity consuming devices can only be accomplished by reduction or source of energy production. You cannot reduce your way to netzero (unless the hidden agenda is the pre industrial age standard of living), therefore the source of energy is the issue. Nuclear power is the only way to accomplish the objective zero emissions reliably. This is precisely in contrast to 70 years of the anti-nuclear movement, whose basis is purely emotional revulsion to the horror of mass death via one bomb.

In reality the whole anti-nuke crusade was put up by Big Coal and Big Oil. They saw their lifetime massive cashflow getting cut to a trickle as dozens of nuclear plants would come on line. Just look at all the roadblocks to reprocessing spent rods and ‘burning’ them in fast neutron reactors. We’d have over 1,000 years of fuel between that and mining uranium and thorium, which is four times more abundant. So we are choking on the spent rods. Even Yucca Mountain was a classic example of choking nukes on their own waste to keep coal, oil, and gas competition free.
Follow the money, not the BS scare stories and molested data.
People are “sick to death” of net zero, says new Tory deputy Chairman
The new deputy Conservative Chairman has said people do not want to be ‘dictated to by the do-gooders’

Last year, Lee Anderson, MP for Ashfield, said: “No one disagrees that we must do more to protect the Earth. But mention the net zero journey to most of the people in Ashfield and they will look at you as if you have just arrived from another planet.”
ELN has contacted the Conservative Party and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for comment.

Tell them where to stick their carrots and vote for someone else less deluded about the climate, if any such candidates exist.
Re. Britain’s ancient nuclear reactors…
French fossil fuel emissions reach five-year high amid nuclear reactor outages
17/2/2023
French greenhouse gas emissions from its power sector jumped to a five year high in 2022 as nuclear outages forced the country to use more gas.
. . .
France’s nuclear output plunged to its lowest level since 1988, turning the country into a net importer of power for the first time in four decades and exacerbating Europe’s energy crunch.
