The wind and solar power myth has finally been exposed

All the arguments here have been expressed elsewhere – usually by climate sceptics – many times, but now the national press is more willing to let the cat out of the bag. The basic problem for renewables is energy storage, or lack of it and as the Telegraph article says, ‘The necessary miracle doesn’t exist’.

Many governments in the Western world have committed to “net zero” emissions of carbon in the near future, says The Telegraph.

The US and UK both say they will deliver by 2050. It’s widely believed that wind and solar power can achieve this.

This belief has led the US and British governments, among others, to promote and heavily subsidise wind and solar.

These plans have a single, fatal flaw: they are reliant on the pipe-dream that there is some affordable way to store surplus electricity at scale.

In the real world a wind farm’s output often drops below 10 per cent of its rated “capacity” for days at a time. Solar power disappears completely every night and drops by 50 per cent or more during cloudy days.

“Capacity” being a largely meaningless figure for a wind or solar plant, about 3000 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar capacity is needed to replace a 1000 MW conventional power station in terms of energy over time: and in fact, as we shall see, the conventional power station or something very like it will still be needed frequently once the wind and solar are online.

The governments of countries with a considerable amount of wind and solar generation have developed an expectation that they can simply continue to build more until net zero is achieved. The reality is that many of them have kept the lights on only by using existing fossil fired stations as backup for periods of low wind and sun.

This brings with it a new operating regime where stations that were designed to operate continuously have to follow unpredictable fluctuations in wind and solar power. As a result operating and maintenance costs have increased and many stations have had to be shut down.

In fact it’s already common to see efficient combined-cycle gas turbines replaced by open-cycle ones because they can be throttled up and down easily to back up the rapidly changing output of wind and solar farms. But open-cycle gas turbines burn about twice as much gas as combined cycle gas turbines.

Switching to high-emissions machinery as part of an effort to reduce emissions is, frankly, madness!
. . .
Wind and solar need to be backed up, close to 100 per cent, by some other means of power generation. If that backup is provided by open-cycle gas or worse, coal, net zero will never be achieved: nor anything very close to it.

There is one technology that can provide a cheap and reliable supply of low-emissions electricity: nuclear power. Interest in nuclear power is increasing as more and more people realise that it is safe and reliable.

If regulators and the public could be persuaded that modern stations are inherently safe and that low levels of nuclear radiation are not dangerous, nuclear power could provide all the low cost, low emissions electricity the world needs for hundreds or thousands of years.

But if we had 100 per cent nuclear backup for solar and wind, we wouldn’t need the wind and solar plants at all.

Wind and solar are, in fact, completely pointless.

There is simply a refusal to confront reality. Renewables means building significant over-capacity of renewables plus significant storage plus back-up generation. Each has to be connected to the Grid and then balanced and managed minute by minute. The idea this can somehow be cheaper than what we had before is ludicrous, a fantasy. And it is much more fragile and much less resilient too.

  4. Peter Rogers says:

Politics is, and always has been, allergic to truth except it be convenient, because it is a game known as “Shepherd and Flock” with the Politician as Shepherd.

If the people are not made anxious it does not work for the Shepherd because he wont get his flock, therefore truth is not the priority, just the appearance of it.

The honest man, who cares for the welfare of the people and does not seek power for its own sake, but as a constructive effort to help us find our way to better pastures (to stay in the analogy) is defeated by the power hungry cynic who simply invents a new wolf, as always heretofore, and points at the weakness of the honest man who is brushed aside in the stampede for the protection of the Shepherd.

That humans are responsible for dangerous Global Warming is just another wolf-sighting, reports of which the gullible core of the population falls for every time.

Plato warned about this 2400 years ago but we never learned.

We almost learned during the English Civil War and during the period of The Enlightenment, but unfortunately we are back to square one now.

Please note the simplicity of this lie about a new wolf to threaten to destroy us from within and the ease with which it ought to be exposed even to the gullible of today.

If the Troposphere was under less pressure it would be larger, but with the same thermal energy content, meaning less thermal energy per unit volume in such a case and therefore at a lower temperature.

This means that the state of compression of the Troposphere causes Atmospheric Thermal Enhancement (ATE).

Gravity determines the weight of the Atmosphere and therefore the extent of compression of the Troposphere and therefore its volume and is therefore a cause of thermal enhancement.

The Anthropogenic theory of Global Warming (AGW) requires that the ATE be the result of the Greenhouse Effect (GE). Accordingly, this must be false, so sic transit AGW!! Please note that nothing further is necessary because the whole thing falls apart!

I strongly recommend the use of this simplified disproof of the AGW as it is accessible to those with little science.

All variation in temperature and climate is therefore understood to be caused by fluctuations in net insolation.

I have put this to your forum a number of times and hope that on this occasion the penny will drop.

The progression of society to the next level which requires it to be the case that cynicism is overcome by honesty depends upon the realisation that it is the Shepherd who has been the real wolf since the dawn of time preside over the fleecing of the flock and for his masters to dine upon it.

In short that the majority for whom “Justice is Right” finally overcome the cynics for whom “Might is Right!”

Excuse me for seeming to change tack, but please consider this important statement.

“Why, of course, the people don’t want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship…

Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”

    – Hermann Goering (as told to Gustav Gilbert during the Nuremberg trials)

The reason I go to the extent of including this; please excuse me for doing so: is that it is a re-statement of the “Shepherd and Flock” technique if you see what I mean and it shows where it leads.

The Climate Debate is actually a massive opportunity to put a hole in the hulk that drags us back to keep us in this primitive power system. Anything to free us and sink it will help bring about a world based on the empathy of the fully developed Human Being who is little in evidence at higher levels to day – it being an all-Shepherd line up.

This empathy is not the visceral stuff that affects us concerning friends and family and those we identify with, but the simple educated knowledge that although we must strive to help our families and friends we do acknowledge that similar suffering experienced by far away people who we don’t know is of the same importance and should be treated as such.

This opens the door to Justice and that is all that is required.

Goodbye AGW and maybe cynical war sometime later.

Needs clarification. What about the mass of the atmosphere? Suppose Earth had the atmosphere of Venus, for example.

Climate maths ‘doesn’t add up’ without carbon capture: COP28 chief

Sultan Al Jaber said renewables such as solar and wind “cannot be the only answer”, especially in the steel, cement and aluminium industries, where emissions are particularly hard to reduce.

So climate maths doesn’t add up – period. Game over, move on.

the math is wrong. Check out this well written paper. I’m sure you’ll be *shocked* to find out these “scientists” don’t know what the hell they are doing. This is from our friend Monkton.
