Forget the cheap electricity hype. The Oliver Twists of the loss-making renewables business are raising their voices again.

London, 5 July – Net Zero Watch has urged the Government to stand up for consumers and businesses by rejecting the wind industry’s latest demands for more subsidies.

In a move that gives the lie to years of propaganda claiming falling costs, the wind industry’s leading lobbyists have written to the Government, threatening to abandon the UK unless there are hugely increased subsidies for their companies (see RenewableUK press release).

The industry is claiming that unforeseen rising costs now necessitate and justify three actions:

1) A vast increase in the budget for the fifth auction (AR5) of Contracts for Difference subsidies, with an increase of two and half times the current levels for non-floating offshore wind alone;

2) Special new targets and thus market shares for floating offshore wind, one of the most expensive of all forms of generation, and, most importantly of all,

3) a revision to the auction rules so that the winners are not determined by lowest bids but by an administrative decision that weights bids according to their “value” in contributing towards the Net Zero targets.

This would in effect not only increase total subsidy to an industry that was until recently claiming to be so cheap that it no longer needed public support, but also provide it with protected market shares, all but entirely de-risking investors at the expense of consumers.

It would also be an open invitation to graft and corruption.

The Government should reject these self-serving demands on three grounds:

Funny I thought they received the now elevated going rate for gas PLUS their ROCS in most cases. NEW investments (CfD based pricing) could be a problem if they have to compete with nuclear on a true cost basis, unsubsidised. THey have similar CAPEX… UNLESS unless you consider that compared to lifetime energy produced so cost/TWh, not cost per GW capacity, which makes nuclear an easy 1/4 the lifetime CAPEX per unit energy produced, so offshore wind is over 4 times the CAPEX per lifetime enrgy produced. Useless. And THat’s fixed offshore, floating is simply bonkers. Why can’t renewables now compete with nuclear or gas now they dispatchable energy is supposedly so expensive? THe BS is wearing very thin.

It would be a good idea if the wind industry actually guaranteed a monthly supply at a fixed rate – they won’t because they can’t. That being said the proponents of net-zero should be told to go and try and live the net-zero life on one if the islands in the Outer Hebrides for 12 months and then report back to the government. I think we would see a quick reversal of the net-zero policy.

the whole green power industry has ever been nothing more than a gigantic grift based on a hoax that was originally meant to secure large long grants for professional grifters in academia

As predicted, they have the government over a barrel. Net Zero is a legal commitment, wind pretty much the only way of getting there. So if all.wind investors say they will only invest if they get what they want, how can the government say no?

  5. saighdear says:

@ Ivan & Phoenix: WHY has no one suggested that before: GREAT Idea: not only go live in the Hebrides but do a daily COMMUTE this now by Ferry ( se/earch Scottish Ferries failure 2023 ) then find WHO made NetZero a legal commitment to PUT the government over a barrel. Can WE not put the gubbering Mints over a barrel? we seem to have a load of gubbering individuals in government who have these peculiar fetishes (?) with weird connotations, not in keeping with what I expect of those in Pubic Service, huh, maybe I had one of those typing moments – forgotten the hrase when you write the CORRECT Thing by mistake ( Och ann, I’m just leavingthe typos – figure out for yourselves… these keyboards and fairmers finggers )

What exactly is going to be the net zero metric in the climate plan?

  7. saighdear says:

Oldbrew, net zero metric in the climate plan?
    1. climate plan? Tell the WIND what to do … it is NOT Behaving again today. Should be fined …. everything / body is fined
2.Zero metric? are we going ELECTRIC or Hydrogen? “Professional” Engineers can’t make up their minds….Battery power and electricmotors, OR Hydrogen CELLS to MOTORS, or HYDROGEN in ICE …. to charge Batteries to run MOTORS or drive direct …. a mixed up cohort of adversaries for Clint to sort out one day: Schwarzenegger no longer FFP, and as for Rambo et al? well by then the world will be at FLash Point … the population at large, that is.. Meanwhile the indigenous peoples of the 3rd World go about their lives oblivious to these Cults…..
