If you’ve been wondering why our country continues to be carpeted with useless windmills while the poor and old work out whether they should heat or eat today, this is where we start finding out. It’s time to tie up loose ends and dispel some of the speculation surrounding the Climategate affair.

Indeed, it’s singular “I” this time.  After certain career developments I can no longer use the papal plural 😉

If this email seems slightly disjointed it’s probably my linguistic background and the problem of trying to address both the wider audience (I expect this will be partially reproduced sooner or later) and the email recipients (whom I haven’t decided yet on).

Another whopping leak from the IPCC.

A substantial second leak, already nicknamed the Secret Santa leak, of further portions of the forthcoming IPCC AR5 has just occurred. There was a smaller leak of material last year, which was owned up to by the person who did it on their blog.

While everyone is no doubt considering how on Earth to work their way through a gigabyte of dense reading material, my first thoughts before plunging in myself is to wonder if the leaker is perhaps the same person or persons, commonly called FOIA, who leaked the original climategate material.

What caught my eye is the tradecraft used to deliver it. The data was sent to Donna Laframboise a week before Christmas on three USB memory sticks. Apart from a posting address, any forensics would be minimal, especially if Donna has done the usual post-Christmas clear out of all envelopes, wrapping paper, packaging etc etc. I hope you’ve done that Donna. DECC and secondments from outside organisations FOI

Well, this makes interesting reading. The Department of Energy and Climate Change in the UK has some odd bedfellows:

by there employer how much in total was this worth to the department for the
last 3 tax years.

In the Climategate investigation summary Norfolk police made two specific allegations: That there were significant “commercial interests” involved. That sceptics believe: climate change is not happening or mankind is not responsible These two sections show this very clearly: “The original hypothesis was that the data had been taken by a person or persons unknown ranging from an individual acting alone to an organised group engaged in espionage or offences linked to terrorism and potentially linked to foreign governments and/or organisations with significant commercial interests. Whilst the terrorism element quickly receded the other elements of the hypothesis remained current throughout the investigation. and Context There are significant political and commercial influences surrounding the climate debate, which include oil producing nations such as Saudi Arabia, emerging economies such as China and existing major economies such as the USA and Russia. Alongside the political and commercial intereststhere exists a global network of climate change sceptics who variously believe that climate change is not happening or if it is, that mankind is not responsible.
