Evidence of a “massive” lightning strike has been found at the centre of a stone circle in the Western Isles.
A single large strike, or many smaller ones on the same spot, left a star-shaped magnetic anomaly at the 4,000-year-old site in Lewis.
Scientists made the discovery at Site XI or Airigh na Beinne Bige, a hillside stone circle now consisting of a single standing stone.
The site is at the famous Calanais Standing Stones.
Scientists said the lightning strike, which was identified in a geophysics survey, could show a potential link between the construction of ancient stone circles and the forces of nature.

I am relatively safe as I live in the North-West Slopes and Plains of New South Wales. This is ~ 700 km north of the worst of the bushfires. My big worry is the Piligar Scrub which is a 3,600 sq. Km forest about 40 to the west of my village. If it catches fire, it will go off like a hydrogen bomb raining burning embers over an area the size of the Midlands in the UK.

Turkey Point nuclear reactors get OK to run until 2053 in unprecedented NRC approval
The Turkey Point nuclear power plant has won final federal approval to continue to operate through at least 2053 — an unprecedented decision by regulators to extend the operating lifespan of nuclear reactors to 80 years.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Thursday announced that it had signed off on Florida Power and Light’s latest application for a 20-year extension for its two reactors located along the mangrove-lined coast of south Biscayne Bay. The utility’s operating licenses, which the federal agency had already agreed to extend by two decades once before, will now expire in July 2052 and April 2053.
“This is the first time the NRC has issued renewed licenses authorizing reactor operations from 60 to 80 years,” the agency said in a statement. The reactors, which went into operation in 1972 and 1973, are now cleared to continue operation for twice as long as the original 40-year operating license had allowed.

The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) has returned to neutral after one of the strongest positive IOD events to impact Australia in recent history. The IOD is expected to remain neutral in the coming months, meaning that it will have little influence on Australian and global climate.
However, the IOD’s legacy of widespread warm and dry conditions during the second half of 2019 primed the Australian landscape for bushfire weather and heatwaves this summer.
In the Pacific Ocean, although indicators of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are neutral, the tropical ocean near and to the west of the Date Line remains warmer than average, potentially drawing some moisture away from Australia.
Most climate models indicate ENSO will remain neutral until at least the end of the southern hemisphere autumn, meaning it will have limited influence on Australian and global climate.

El Niño-Southern Oscillation heat engine shifts eastward under global warming

In a study recently published in Science Advances, an international team from China, the U.K. and the U.S. proposes a new mechanism to understand the eastward shift and extension of ENSO-induced precipitation anomalies under global warming. The researchers analyzed a large ensemble climate change simulation conducted by the Met Office in the U.K.
“We found under global warming, the weakened easterly trade wind over the tropical Pacific would weaken the meridional overturning circulation of the subtropical cell, and further cause the narrowing of the meridional span of ENSO,” said the corresponding author Dr. Bo Wu from Institute of Atmospheric Physics at Chinese Academy of Sciences. “It means that the sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies associated with the ENSO are more concentrated toward the equator. Tighter ENSO becomes more powerful in driving moisture convergence over the equatorial central-eastern Pacific, which leads to the eastward shift and extension of the precipitation anomalies, even if ENSO intensity stays unchanged under global warming.”

I recently have stumbled or perhaps guided into a correlation that is to good to be ignored in my opinion. The stuff needs a lot more work. So I have found that by adding the cosines of the planets longitudinal position with reference to the sun with specific reference to to J, S and U. The absolute Sum (ABS) of (Jupiter+ Saturn +Jupiter + Uranus) and then was compared to the correlation of TPW and OLR using the Correl function in excel. The data for the TPW OLR is from NOAA NCEP Reanalysis and the planets is from the Horizons Nasa site.

By using a catalyst which contains depleted uranium, the researchers have managed to convert ethylene (an alkene used to make plastic) into ethane (an alkane used to produce a number of other compounds including ethanol).
Their work is a breakthrough that could help reduce the heavy burden of large-scale storage of DU, and lead to the transformation of more complicated alkenes.

Also, on good days the renewables may be providing too much power and the surplus has to go somewhere, or some power has to be switched off and the provider compensated.

It is advisable to do the economics thoroughly, because what at first sight would seen ridiculous or downright bad would possibly be the better option. It is the worked numbers of the various options that tell what is the best option.
The cost of electricity is not just the cost of the plant, it also includes the fuel, all worked over a number of years to cover the economic life-time of the project. Then also the economics may be extended to consider social aspects like Jobs that provide an employment in a hard hit area (electricity production is like any other manufacturing – but politicians rarely see it that way), and also national health issues which can be a hidden additional cost.
An example: Peak load shaving required the generation of a very limited number of MWh over the year. An investment had to be made, but the choice of plant was dictated by the perceived load. However once its made, the less it worked the better because it reduced the eventual yearly cost.
Of course, whoever installed the plants wants to recoup his investment. Which makes multiple vested interests getting constantly in conflict with good economics.

Not only do they shed light on the true nature of the icy Kuiper Belt Objects in the distant solar system, but they provide strong evidence for a theory on how planets form more generally.
“We have made a major breakthrough in understanding the process of how planetary formation works,” Alan Stern, principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, told Gizmodo.

The visual quality of this presentation is outstanding. The reporters who are responsible for the way in which the devastation of these summer bushfires is presented deserve an award for their outstanding work.
However, their explanation as to the primary cause of these bushfires falls flat on its face because they use the old magicians trick of sleight of hand. They are correct in pointing out that these bush fires are caused by severe drought, low humidity (caused hot temperatures and dry conditions), high winds and massive (unprecedented) fuel loads.
Where their explanation completely breaks down, is their unscientific conclusion that these conditions were a direct result of human-induced climate change. Other than the bloviating of the pseudo-scientific charlatan Dr. Michael Mann, they have no direct evidence supporting their case. Indeed, what evidence does exist actually contradicts their un-scientific assertions. They argue that:
a) the two to three extremely dry years prior to the terrible fires were caused by human-induced climate change. No rational scientist would make such a ludicrous claim. CO2 levels have been systematically increasing since the 1940s and 1950s. While this increase in CO2 was occurring, the annual rainfall totals in S.E. Australia actually went up, not down and droughts become less frequent. Indeed, the data shows that droughts were far more frequent prior to WWII compared to the last 50 years.
b) the extremely dry conditions in SE Australia in late 2019 were a direct result of the unusually strong positive Indian Ocean Dipole. The extremely dry weather caused by this led to the low humidity levels and helped dry out the pre-existing (unprecedented) fuel loads. What they say about this cannot be disputed. However, there is absolutely no scientific evidence linking the purported effects of human-induced global warming to more frequent and/or more intense Indian Ocean Diploes. It is up to those who make this un-supported assertion to provide evidence to bak their spurious claim.
c) the increasingly higher summer-time temperatures exacerbate the fire conditions and that these higher temperatures are primarily the result of human-induced climate change. The first part of this statement cannot be disputed. However, the second part is not supported by scientific evidence. Observations show that the world’s mean temperature increased by about 0.6 C between the 1900s and the 1940s. This global increase in temperature occurred without any accompanying increase in the levels of CO2 (i.e. it must have been due to natural variations in the Earth’s climate). These same observations show that the world’s mean temperature increased by 0.7 C between 1970 and the 2010s, a period over which CO2 levels systematically rose. Given the significant natural warming in the world’s mean temperature in the earlier part of the 20th century, no rational scientist could claim that the correlation between increasing levels of CO2 and increasing temperatures is indisputable proof that the higher temperatures are predominantly caused by human CO2 emissions.
d) the high fuel loads are partly responsible for the devastating fire.
Ask yourself the question, why are they only mentioning the fuel loads in passing? Why aren’t they asking about the reason for these (unprecedented) fuel loads? Could it be because they know that the build-up of these (unprecedented) fuel loads were not caused by human-induced climate change but human-induced stupidity? It does not take a super genius to realize that the fuel load build-up was a direct result of the criminal mismanagement of our native forests by humans.
Those who claim that the devastating summer bush-fires were a direct result of human-induced climate change are dragging the name of science through the mud. They are causing irreparable damage to the reputation of science that will last for generations. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Free charging for electric vehicles in Warrington
18TH FEBRUARY 2020
FREE charging for electric vehicles will be available at Warrington’s new Time Square multi-storey car park and Warrington West railway station for at least the next six months. This was announced by the borough council today.
There are currently 56 charging points (7 kWh) at the Time Square car park – one of the highest number of charging points in a single location in the country – with another 12 charging points (7 kWh) available at Warrington West station.
Free charging may continue after six months, depending on a review of the situation.
The move to offering free electric vehicle charging comes after the council’s climate emergency declaration last June.

Using data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), researchers have found more than 300 trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), minor planets located in the far reaches of the solar system, including more than 100 new discoveries. Published in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, the study also describes a new approach for finding similar types of objects and could aid future searches for the hypothetical Planet Nine and other undiscovered planets.

Sunspot Activity, Influenza and Ebola Outbreak Connection
An ever-present threat of a major new influenza pandemic of devastating proportions haunts us, and despitediligent monitoring of circulating viruses has been impossible to predict. On a more local scale outbreaks of EbolaHemorrhagic Fever (EHF) in West Africa have posed a serious public health threat because of its high fatality risk.Research on the environmental factors underlying both EHF and influenza epidemiology may provide useful insightsinto the occurrence of future pandemic outbreaks. This study suggests that sunspot activity in extremum or ± oneyear was associated with influenza pandemics and severe EHF outbreaks in Africa from 1976 to 2014. Potentialmechanisms by which sunspot activity may influence viral outbreaks are discussed. Current and future surveillanceefforts should be supported to construct a comprehensive early warning system involving virus monitoring andepidemioilogy on the ground, sunspot activity as well as stratospheric sampling for forecasting future pandemics.

Relevance of Solar System Dynamics for Present-Day Studies of Planetary Atmospheric Circulations (and other Geophysical Phenomena)

Abstract
An expression describing a non-tidal coupling of the orbital and rotational motions of extended bodies is derived in [Plan. Space Sci. 141, 1, 2017]. The orbit-spin coupling torque (or, ‘coupling term acceleration,’ CTA) is given by CTA = -c (dL/dt × ωα) × r, where dL/dt is the rate of change of the orbital angular momentum of the subject body with respect to inertial frames, ωα is the angular velocity of the rotational motion of the subject body, and r is a position vector identifying a specific location on or within the subject body. The leading coefficient c is a coupling efficiency coefficient, to be determined through comparisons of model outcomes with observations, which is typically constrained (by error estimates for numerical simulations of orbital motions) to be extremely small. In contrast to conventional tidal friction (i.e., “spin-orbit coupling”) models, the torque given by the above equation changes sign. This may lead to both positive and negative accelerations of the rotation. As with tidal friction, dissipative interactions within the body are an expected consequence, as are slow evolutionary changes in orbital motions (conserving total system angular momentum). Orbit-spin coupling is likely to be effective over far larger distances than may be the case for tidal friction, where the torques have a dependence on the inverse 6th power of distance. Two studies incorporating the CTA within atmospheric general circulation models have appeared [Plan Space Sci. 141, 45, 2017; Icarus 317, 649, 2019]. A key objective was to determine whether the agreement between atmospheric observations and numerical modeling outcomes could be improved by including the CTA with a non-zero value of c. This question has been answered in the affirmative; the modified GCMs successfully reproduce Martian global dust storm conditions in the years in which such storms actually occurred, with ‘hindcast’ success rates approaching 80%. The orbit-spin coupling hypothesis offers many opportunities for new research, both focusing on currently open questions, and in connection with re-evaluations of the conclusions of prior studies.

It may seem intuitive that Earth’s sun-baked equator is hot while the relatively sun-deprived poles are cold, with a gradient of temperatures in between. However, the actual span of that temperature gradient is relatively small compared to what it might otherwise be because of the way the Earth system physically transports heat around the globe to cooler regions, moderating the extremes.
Otherwise, “you would have unbearably hot temperatures at the equator and [the temperate latitudes] would be frozen,” says Ferrari. “So, the fact that the planet is habitable, as we know it, has to do with heat transport from the equator to the poles.”

Clouds: How Luke Howard linked Weather Lore and Natural Philosophy

William Wordsworth’s (1770-1850) ‘lonely as a cloud’ poem was conceived in April 1802 on a spring day walk in the Lake District. A few months later, in December 1802, a pharmacist and amateur meteorologist, Luke Howard (1772-1864) delivered a paper in London, on the dynamics of cloud formations. The two events were unrelated but their futures became intertwined.

What is it about Howard’s approach to clouds that made his essay so influential? Various characteristics have been identified so far; a few are highlighted here.
Howard likened cloud formations to the eloquence of human facial expression:
Clouds ‘are subject to certain distinct modifications, produced by the general causes which effect all the variations of the atmosphere: they are commonly as good visible indications of the operation of these causes, as is the countenance of the state of a person’s mind or body.’ (Howard 1830:3)
By relating clouds to people, especially the face, the most personal feature of an individual, Howard captured the imagination of his readers.
