Doug Proctor: What #COP21 agreement means

Doug Proctor has gone over the decision at COP21 for us.

1. Everybody gets to do what he wants to do, without repercussions other than official notes in the media of progress vis-a-vis what he said.

2. Nothing has to be done that “threatens” food production. Not “reduces”, but threatens. This should allow cutting down forests and the slash-and-burn style of agriculture, and exempt agricultural practices, including beef production, from carbon-taxes, fuel surcharges or the need to make them less CO2 heavy.

3. Financing is neither fixed, nor firm, but voluntary and without a timeframe. Financing is still at the stage of ‘determining’ what others may need. There is no “SHALL” involved with collection or redistribution of funds.

COP21 website sets out to disprove sceptical arguments

Here’s an amusing page from the French government’s COP21 website. I’ve added comments in bold italics. These people need to answer the the Paris Climate Challenge to support their own position, rather than create strawman arguments put into the mouths of sceptics.

Climate-change sceptics’ main arguments disproved point by point.

Global warming stopped in 1998 – since then, temperatures have barely risen.

This claim is based on the Hadley Center report which showed a rise in average temperature of 0.02°C per decade between 1998 and 2008. It has since been widely publicized by climate-change sceptics and wrongly interpreted as a sign that global warming has stopped. But this set of statistics did not include the Arctic, where temperatures have risen significantly in recent years.

This is incorrect, summer minimum has been stable for the last decade on average.

BBC pre-Paris spin: What is Climate Change?

The BBC has a new article asking ‘What is Climate Change?’ There is much to criticise, although ‘sceptics’ do at least get a mention in regard to ‘the pause’, which is briefly mentioned in a paragraph far down the article. Have a look and post your thoughts below.

Welcome to the world of funny money as ‘climate pledges’ are converted into imaginary dollars. PEI reports on the latest fantasy numbers as the Paris climate conference aka COP21 approaches.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has today released a special briefing document that outlines the energy sector implications of national decarbonisation pledges submitted for the upcoming December climate summit in Paris, known as COP21.

The briefing finds that if all countries meet the goals outlined in their submitted pledges, growth in energy-related emissions – which account for two-thirds of total greenhouse gas emissions – will “slow to a relative crawl by 2030”.
