Fracking: note the deep shaft

The people doing the banning conveniently forget they can’t enough gas at the moment, including from the US obtained by the method they profess not to like. But importing fracked gas is no problem, essential even.

The ban on fracking in England will be reinstated, new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said.

It reverses a decision by his predecessor Liz Truss, says BBC News.

Fracking was first halted in England in 2019, amid opposition from green groups and concerns about earth tremors.

What is fracking?

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a technique for recovering gas and oil from shale rock.

It involves drilling into the earth and directing a high-pressure mixture of water, sand and chemicals at a rock layer, to release the gas inside.

Wells can be drilled vertically or horizontally in order to release the gas.

What has the government said about fracking?

Rishi Sunak was asked about fracking at his first Prime Minister’s Questions, by Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

He told the Commons he “stands by” the 2019 Conservative Party manifesto, which pledged to maintain a ban on the practice in England.

It had banned fracking earlier that year and stated that it would not be allowed unless the science changed. A scientific review into fracking by the British Geological Survey says there is still a limited understanding of the impacts of such drilling.

Mr Sunak’s stance reverses a decision taken by the government in September, when Liz Truss was prime minister.

At that time it said fracking could go ahead in some places. It said it could help the UK strengthen the security of its energy supplies, amid uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine.

The Scottish and Welsh governments continue to oppose fracking, and say they will not use their powers to grant drilling licences.

With that, the signalling of a Digital Currency and the reversal of most of the mini-budget, Rishi is already in full speed WEF mode.

    Perfidious Albion.

No one should do business in Britain.

  7. oldbrew says:

It would be banned after the next election anyway if the Tories lost, which seems likely as of now. So who wants to risk spending more £millions only to have the rug pulled away?

  8. mort says:

are there any political groups in the UK that want fracking or are pro fossil fuel energy?

I normally don’t wish ill on others in respect to Lady Karma, but I will not shed a tear if a million people die of cold and starvation in the next twelve months. Until then these morons will continue sending evil hearted idiots to Parliament and Congress who will then do bad things to us. Windmills for primary power! Good grief!!!

Environmental scientist from a fracking state, Colorado. The “fears” of fracking are spread, according to FBI sources….Russia — Putin spends to “enviro” wackos keep us from fracking — not just in the US, but in Great Britain too. So, what the Hell is wrong with fracking, unless the UK has gone and abandoned Ukraine?

  11. Orson says:

From “Fracking and The Environment: A Scientific Assessment of The Environmental Risks of Hydraulic Fracturing and Fossil Fuels
by Daniel J. Soeder (Springer, 2021): “With a few exceptions described in later chapters of this book, no studies have been able to definitively link fracking with significant environmental degradation.” And these issues are manageable as well as smaller than traditional oil and gas extraction.

  12. Phoenix44 says:

In other words, Sunak sides with the elites rather than the people. That was Truss’ crime, siding with the electorate on some issues.

  13. ilma630 says:

Don’t the Gaudian use emotive misleading language, “blasting”, “associated with” and quoting a NATO press source on energy security matters??!! Can they report anything honestly? They even report “no shale gas produced in the UK” forgetting the fracking well at Sandbanks that’s been operating for years virtually unnoticed, and certainly not causing ‘earthquakes’.

  14. ilma630 says:

Trusses’ crime, and Trump’s it seems.

  15. Gamecock says:

“are there any political groups in the UK that want fracking or are pro fossil fuel energy?”

    January may fix that.

British Gas-owner reopens storage ahead of winter

‘Centrica said it could store up to 30 billion cubic feet of gas for UK homes and businesses over the coming colder months. The Rough facility is currently operating at around 20% of its previous capacity this winter.’
    . . .
“Even with Rough we still only store 2% of our annual gas demand, compared to over 25% on average in Europe.”

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-63423600

But the UK has some North Sea gas, LNG ports and a pipeline of gas from Norway. The winter test awaits.

The same natural gas that’s cheap in the US is exported at astronomical prices to Europe.

    . . .
But Europe thinks it can save the climate or something by not exploiting its own gas. France’s Macron complains about US double standards but ignores his own in refusing to drill for gas on French soil.
