Is this the thin end of the green wedge, as EV owners get ever more preferential treatment from the authorities – on the roads every UK citizen has to pay for?

Drivers of zero-emission cars are to be given green number plates which could make them eligible to by-pass congestion zone charges or secure cheaper parking, says Metro News.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said they will be available from autumn and would help ‘show people that a greener transport future is within our grasp’.

The move is designed to make switching to electric vehicles more appealing as the government looks to meet its target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Mr Shapps said green number plates ‘could unlock a number of incentives for drivers’ and increase awareness of cleaner vehicles on the roads.

Question: since when was Plastic Green again? Ans. since Covid ! and as for Green Plate? stuff called Paint or Tape…… or will all green products now be banned in case we abuse them?
By the way, Virtually NO Wind powered Electricity today as per gridwatch ( and there is a 10% Rise in demand as of recent weeks )

  2. Graeme No.3 says:

A bit of green tape on the numberplate and “with one bound you are free”** to bypass congestion (except that clouding the brain of some politicians).
When will some of them realise that Brexit means never having to say yes to Brussels?

**Refer to book of the same name about Victorian Age ‘penny dreadfulls’.

Great green utopia is 63% gas today, 1% wind.

Even the BBC can’t spin that one.

Is the car no. plate in the photo promoting zero oxygen?

  4. Stuart Brown says:

    From Reuters:
“Edmund King, president of British motoring association AA Plc, said the distinctive licence plates could instil a sense of pride among drivers, adding that more than a third of AA members backed the initiative.

    So… 2/3 don’t back it then?

“Having a green flash on the number plate may become a badge of honour for some drivers,” he said in a statement. ”

    Nope, no comment.

  5. ivan says:

Stuart, it is possible that someone will see that as ‘white privilege’ and start beating on those cars or maybe even setting them on fire. Only idiots would want plates like that to indicate their superiority and make their cars stand out.

I think it is time we considered a totally new anti green government.

  6. saighdear says:

Aye, reading through the recent comments: Badge of Honour,eh? Snobbishness or will it be likeTHat Fake watches I don’t want to own. Maybe it is a Signal for the Beginning of the End ( Alpha to Omega)

  7. cognog2 says:

There no such thing as a Zero Emission car and I don’t think people will look kindly on these green queue jumpers at everyone else’s expense. Me for starters.

  8. oldbrew says:

Some of these so-called ‘zero emissions’ will be coming from *burning* biomass…

The Times: Aid for wood-fired power stations ‘based on outdated assumptions’

The government has committed £13 billion to support wood-burning power stations but a study has found that it is relying on an outdated assumption that they help to combat climate change.

Biomass power plants, which burn wood, receive direct subsidies of more than £1 billion a year, according to an analysis published today by Ember, a climate-change think tank. Next year the three large plants operating in Britain will also benefit from an annual carbon tax break forecast at about £333 million. [bold added]

If that isn’t ludicrous, what is?

  9. Lorne Newell says:

There is no such thing as a zero emissions car. Nor any other mode of transportation. Production of anything requires energy.

This will bring the cost of virtue signaling way down.

You can do several plates for a few pounds.

  12. E.M.Smith says:

    @Stuart:

Not zero emissions. Aside from the exhaled CO2, there are certain liquid and paste like “emissions” deposited at refueling stops…..

Look at the overall efficiency of plant to animal to motive power. There are tons of “road apple” deposits for any significant journey.

  15. oldbrew says:

At least we got rid of this blue 😎

  16. Stuart Brown says:

    EM Smith,

Quite right. And those emissions are good for plants too! 🙂

  17. Henning Nielsen says:

We have a saying in Norway; “going green with envy”, maybe that is what they aim for. There is such a lot of posturing about this, there was a municipality that had built a suburb too far away from town to make walking or biking attractive, and yet it was too small to have its own bus service, so car transport was the only realistic way of travel. Still they wanted some “environmental element”, I suggested they make it mandatory to paint all garage doors green. They were not amused.
