The UK is getting more like California every day in terms of an obsession with phony climate virtue signalling, with its drive to weaken the energy industry wealth creators and subsidise their so-called ‘renewable’ competitors.
– – –
Ministers are considering declaring the beginning of the end for the North Sea oil industry with a ban on new exploration licences, says The Sunday Telegraph (via The GWPF).

The radical move is on the table as part of a decisive shift away from fossil fuels and as part of preparations for the crucial climate summit the Government is due to host in Glasgow in the autumn.

Britain is already legally bound to deliver “net zero” carbon emissions by 2050.

Options being consulted on are understood to include an end to issuing licences in 2040, and an immediate temporary pause in licences. No change to the licensing regime is also possible.

One industry source said a decision is close. A ban on new licences would begin the terminal decline of British exploration in the North Sea and would be particularly controversial in Scotland.

An estimated 39pc of the 270,000 total UK jobs supported by the oil industry are in Scotland – more than any other UK region – and the SNP has relied on forecasts of future North Sea tax revenues to claim that the nation could pay its way outside the Union.

  1. Gamecock says:

‘The radical move is on the table as part of a decisive shift away from fossil fuels and as part of preparations for the crucial [sic] climate summit the Government is due to host in Glasgow in the autumn.’

Cleaning hotel rooms would be preparations to host a summit in Glasgow.

‘considering declaring the beginning of the end for the North Sea oil industry with a ban on new exploration licences’

    . . . prepares you for hosting a summit HOW ?!?!

    Self mutilation is not preparation.

  2. saighdear says:

Could someone please take the time to explain EXACTLY how “law” is made and applied – Internationally or locally? visa vie the Laws of Nature ( Energy) and / or the Law of God ? why do we comply with nonsense?

  3. oldbrew says:

The Paris climate agreement is a pseudo-treaty. It may pretend to have legal force like a treaty, but it’s not one, mainly because the US (under Obama) was unable to sign a treaty without the approval of its democratic (small ‘d’) representatives – meaning 2/3rds of the Senate, which was not going to happen.

But the UK parliament has converted its climate obsessions into domestic law, aka the Climate Change Act and other bits and pieces like ‘net zero’ emissions.

  4. dennisambler says:

Laws can be made in the blink of an eye, as we found out when Bercow was allowing the anti-Brexit MP’s to indulge themselves. The CCC could be repealed just as quickly if sufficient “Conservative” MP’s were to think of their constituents and the future of the country rather than their immediate security under Boris.

  5. oldbrew says:

    Climate Change Act 2008

Words starting with ‘require’ occur 127 times 🙄
    – – –
CCC: The Sixth Carbon Budget report is based on an extensive programme of analysis, consultation and consideration by the Committee and its staff, building on the evidence published last year for our Net Zero advice.

    From ‘Key recommendations’…
Diets change, reducing our consumption of high-carbon meat and dairy products by 20% by 2030, with further reductions in later years. There are fewer car miles travelled and demand for flights grows more slowly. These changes bring striking positive benefits for health and well-being.

Your life will be increasingly micro-managed, if these tinpot dictators get their way.

  6. stpaulchuck says:

when are the people going to dump these MP’s?? How much pain does the UK have to put up with before the people revolt?

Here in the US the pols have their pet Klimate Kaliphate Klowns in the media already spinning the panic pron about an apocalyptic future because we are warming up out of the LIA. This future has been predicted by the same climate model software that has NEVER been right since they started this scam.

This is what happens when you take MS’s in STEM and MA’s in history out of the classrooms and replace them with MA’s in Education (a major oxymoron). The kids come out dumber than they went in.

  7. Stephen Richards says:

You have to get rid of these socialist tories before they and the real left totally destroy your economy

  8. Kip Hansen says:

Are these people totally nuts? Petroleum isn’t just used to make gasoline and diesel fuel and fire up electrical power plants — half the manufactured stuff in the world (rhetorically speaking) is made from OIL.

I think its a good idea to quit burning oil to make electricity and to operate passenger automobiles just on general principles — but banning oil discovery and production is a destructive national policy and simply throws the prize to the Middle East and Russia.

  9. ivan says:

Princess Nut-Nut is running the country for her friends and George Soros. The former want to live in a la-la land utopia and the latter wants to get the billions from the ‘great reset’ organised by the rich boys from Davos and the UN.

I hope the people of the country will wakeup soon and demand a return to normality but I doubt it will happen they are too brain washed into obeying without question by the stupidity and regulations of the Wu-flu.

  10. Graeme No.3 says:

News from Down Under; the West Australian State elections were last Saturday and, as expected, the Labor Government was re-elected.
The Liberal “opposition” adopted the Attenborough Walrus position and ‘campaigned’ on very Green ideas. They lost, but weren’t quite wiped out. Their ex-leader lost his seat, and so few (2 maybe 3) were returned that the Liberals have lost the status of Head of Opposition to a minor party.
    Sic Transit WOKE.

  11. oldbrew says:

Economies that turn against fossil fuels will be far more expensive to run. No escaping that.

  12. oldbrew says:

Slight problem for net zero numpties…

Bram Murton, a geologist with the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, says that if all the cars on Europe’s roads are electric by 2040, and if they use the same kind of batteries as the Tesla Model 3, that would require 28 times more cobalt than is produced right now.
    – – –
Last year, the average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of cars sold in the UK rose for the third year in a row. And for every electric car purchased in 2019, we bought 37 SUVs.

  13. Phoenix44 says:

They really have gone off the deep end. If we ban it we will never get the expertise and knowledge base back.

We have descended into an abyss of wishful thinking, ignorance and fantasy driven by the wild claims of a handful of zealots.

  14. Chaswarnertoo says:

    I have rope.

  15. tom0mason says:

‘Scientific’ socialism at its finest – if in doubt ban it!

Sometime way-back-when, conservative politics was all about keeping the government small effective and efficient and out of most peoples lives. It was understood that a plurality of views was a good thing to have, allowing freedom of choice while having the minimum of laws, statutes and mandates to ensure a peaceful law-abiding civil society to thrive and grow.
Ho-hum how the world has changed, now UK conservative politics is about banning, censoring, control the population with limited re-spun information (aka propaganda), supporting corrupt cronies and multinationals, and silencing any opposition.

  16. Gamecock says:

Yes, Phoenix44. Thomas Sowell said: We have spent the last 30 years replacing what works with what sounds good.

‘Green bus revolution’: UK to ban diesel bus sales and boost electric and hydrogen fleets
    15 March 2021

The UK Government has committed to ending the sale of new diesel buses and increasing sales of British-built, zero-emission models, in a move that should help tackle climate change and air pollution.—UK-to-ban-diesel-bus-sales-and-boost-electric-and-hydrogen-fleets/
    – – –
Air pollution effect maybe, but no effect on the climate except in the heads of deluded alarmists.

  18. Gamecock says:

Correct, tom0mason. The West has become totally fascist (strong, autocratic central control of a private economy).

As in ” banning, censoring, control the population with limited re-spun information (aka propaganda), supporting corrupt cronies and multinationals, and silencing any opposition.”

I used to dislike Yankees. But they aren’t so bad compared to Californians. So called right-leaning Californians leaving the state and infecting other states with their political virus. They don’t comprehend the level of corruption of government. These California refugees’ dislike of their government stems from not liking what the government is doing. What they conspicuously miss is the problem is deeper: it is the government’s power to do it. They go to other states with the idea that government has unlimited power. Their only beef is in how government uses it. They are fascists, but don’t realize it. They think they have good thoughts as to what government should do, when, in fact, in most cases, government should do NOTHING.

Government intrusion for a good cause is still government intrusion.

  19. saighdear says:

Yes,eh, -ban on diesel bus sales: Scourie in NW Sutherland is often quoted as a remote place far from anywhere: at least 70 miles from Inverness for HGV Maintenance etc. Fancy an electric or Hydrogen bust trip to there? and buses will become so frequent that there’ll not be need for timetables? Was that “news” meant for south of Watford ONLY? – then why tell the rest of us.

  20. Curious George says:

Green ideas have one thing in common everywhere: They are being pushed from the top. They are never subjected to popular vote.

  23. Coeur de Lion says:

Please everybody campaign to get the Climate Change Committee up on the podium weekly at least to do a COVID-style crisis briefing and discuss ‘the science’ and the costs and benefits. Email your MP, write to the papers. The public deserves no less.

  24. Johna says:

With respect to the overall dismay we share of our ignorant and corrupt politicians. We must, as technically informed and concerned citizens, work collectively to change our political systems of governance. Surly we can have a political system where the people of the country have true democracy and controlling share in running the country. Of course we can still have a lesser mix of existing party politics and agree to disagree on keeping our heritage and ensure the royalty, elites and money moguls can’t interject in our laws or thwart our efforts. Indeed it is only the generations after we had sensible and collective governance that have created the mess we are in.
However, for us to do nothing and allow this to continue only exacerbates our once mighty and proud country becoming the laughing stock of a World who despises our ruling classes and will work against them to ensure we will be unable to compete in World trade. The irony is it affects the working classes disproportionally more than the rulers and elitist. And this is exactly how the Pandemic is panning out in the UK and the USA too; a vaccine that is medically the opposite of how a vaccine works to attain proper Herd Immunity. And a test, chase, trace isolate policy that many so called lesser countries adopted and are far better off than us.
    The technical facts are clear;
    • All intact ice age core samples show climatic cycle events were not driven by CO2.
    • Our laws of of physics and thermodynamics disprove the Flat Earth CO2 AGW Contention.
    • Improving instrumented monitoring will always show greater resolution and correlation.
    • All World Governments knew the dangers of SARS CoV1 and MERS CoV and what the affected counties did to contain and combat it.
